I wrote about this wine back in 2012 (Cosentino Reserve Sonoma), with a note to re-taste in 5 years. The wine is transparent, light purple, seductive. The nose is fresh, with strawberry, barnyard and raspberry. On the palate it is super smooth. The strawberry coulis is forefront with red berry extract and a caressing tannic structure. Acidity is perfect and the wine balances itself all the way to the rather long finish. I would imagine this wine is approaching peak. It has hints of tertiary flavors while maintaining the freshness of the red fruits. It has a good backbone and the structure is there to allow for further development. I would drink till 2026 and pair it with game, poultry and perhaps Filet Mignon. It is a rather delicate profile, sexy and lithe- not a brooding, big and bold wine. I am sticking with 92 points and 5 stars. Salut….
It’s pasta night and I need a Sangiovese. This one happens to be ready to go on my daily drinking shelf and I am excited.
In the glass, the color is a pale, see through reddish purple- reminiscent of Pinot Noir. On the nose, strawberry and cherry, just like Pinot. The palate introduces me to delicious strawberry and capsicum flavors, but I get a dose of heat right away. A quick glance reveals a 14.5% lurker here.
The wine transitions on the mid palate to more strawberries and a red raspberry jam. The alcohol still permeates though and I am not sensing much in the way of tannins, until the very end. The finish is where they appear, very well integrated but lacking a good dose of acidity, just more heat. The wine is delicious, yet unbalanced and I fear it will not hold out well in the cellar, which is a shame as I would love to revisit this one in 10 years. 88 points, the structure and excessive alcohol being detractors. I really do enjoy the flavors though. For $28 it is a 2 star wine for me. Salut….
Just a gorgeous dark purple in the glass, it shows promise! On the nose I get lavender, plums, and a remarkable blackberry hint. On the palate I am getting delicious plums, black cherry kirsch and a hint of upfront tannins. As the wine progresses to the mid palate the tannins firm up a touch and the fruit mellows somewhat, indicating youth in this wine. The finish shows off a blueberry component which has me confused. Plums, Blackberry, Black Cherry and now blueberry. It cannot be possible, yet here it is, bathed in very well integrated tannins and just a touch of acidity. This wine is delicious, it really is. My choice was to pair it with Strip Steak, steamed Artichokes and a Cauliflower puree. A perfect match. This wine gets 91 points from and for $45 it is a 4 star effort. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot are the make up of this Bordeaux style wine, which as you know really excites me. Drink till 2022 at the least. Salut….
I bought several bottles of the Cosentino Cabernet and really liked it. This is a follow-up after three more years in cellar.
Blackish purple in the glass. Nose of cedar, black plums and tea. On the palate this wine immediately lets you know it is well built with hefty tannins. The flavors of plum, black cherry and pepper are fighting for control with the amazing tannins. I am loving this wine’s mouthfeel today in particular because it will pair beautifully with the ribeyes on the grill. If the dryness is overpowering for you I suggest a trip through a vinturi or decanting. The wine has a nice finish and the tannins go on forever. I really love this varietal and this is one excellent example. 92 points and 4 stars for this $40 offering. Salut….
I’m a fan of this winery and recently went for a wine and cheese pairing. I ordered a few bottles of this blend. Pale yellow/hints of gold in the glass. A nose of yellow apple, ginger, lime and a touch of pineapple. Initial tastes of apple, pineapple and a touch of butter. Reminiscent of Napa Chardonnay yet shouting out that it’s a blend. Very nice mid palate with ever so gentle acidity. The finish is nice, with a green apple meets melon twist. That’s also the point that the acidity hits. There’s some mid-palate ring going on as well. 90 points from me and perfectly suited for grilled chicken with roasted veggies, or just drink it chilled on a hot summers day! A blend of 56% Sauvignon Blanc, 44% Semillon that costs $20 at retail and got 88 points from WE. A 4 star effort that you need by the case (it’s $16 per if you join the club). Salut….
Pale yellow in the glass with a strong nose of tart apple, green pear and lemon zest. The initial attack tastes of yellow pear, Granny Smith apples and a hint of lemon peel. Good acidity give this wine some zip… A nice warm mid palate with some baked apples leave me with a nice finish. I really enjoyed this wine. Perfect for some seafood with a cream sauce or perhaps some chicken alfredo. 91 points from me and at $22, its a 5 star rocker. Salut….
A Napa Valley white wine blended from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Pale yellow with a nose of lemon, asparagus and crunchy green apple. The initial attack is very soft with elegant hints of quince, yellow apple and green melon. Not as steely as a Chablis nor as buttery as a Napa chard, it sits comfortably in the middle. It possesses a longish finish than refreshes and coaxes. I’m guessing there is no malolactic fermentation and a minimal amount of new oak, but it’s just a guess. Refreshing yet hearty. 91 points. The only drawback is the 14.5% alcohol which is well disguised. Nicely done and for $20, this is a 4 star wine. Salut….
