It’s summer, which means Rose’. I have recently started to enjoy and understand a bit more about this style of wine so when I saw one made from Cabernet Sauvignon- I had to try. It is a much deeper shade of reddish pink than most Rose’ wines, probably a longer maceration with the skins to give it the color. On the nose it is quite fresh with strawberry, citrus, almond and pear coming through. On the palate this chilled wine is delicious. Lemon, blood orange and strawberry are my initial tastes. It has a touch of acidity that refreshes the palate beautifully. The reddish fruit (Strawberry and blood orange) carry through the mid palate. The transition to the finish is seamless with the addition of some pear and more lemon zest. It leaves the gums pleasantly tingling with some acidity and that lingering blood orange tinge. A really yummy summer quaffer that will refresh while preparing dinner or go great with Salmon, salad or grilled garlic chicken. Drink till 2022. 89 points and 5 stars for this $12 effort. PS. This wine was a perennial favorite many years ago. I gravitated to reds and rarely bought it, until I saw it on sale the other day. I’m making Sizzling Hoisin Shrimp tonight so I figured a Sauvignon Blanc would do the trick.
This wine is faint gold in color, not quite yellow, nor deep. The nose is bright, charming and packed with citrus notes. Grapefruit being the major player here. The initial taste is very refreshing, quince and citrus battling it out for dominance. The wine has a nice balance, not overly acidic yet a touch dry and offering a hint of bitterness. I get Almond seed on the mid palate which is probably how I sense the bitterness, it is unique. The finish is all lemon and persimmon. I am glad I bumped into this bottle, it really is tasty while remaining relatively modest in price. It refreshes and will go well with my dinner but I am thinking it may take on some spicy foods as well if you are in a pinch. 89 points and 4 stars for this $13 wine. Salut….
I recently wrote about the 2013 Faithful Hound, so when I caught some of the 2014 on sale, I grabbed a few. Retailing for $18, it’s a good parallel to the Bordeaux style blends that I so truly love. This one has a dark purple complexion, just like it’s older sister. The nose is gorgeous- plums, bramble, chocolate, some oak and a blueberry component. On the palate, much darker fruits than expected. More of the blackberry and currants theme with some violets. The mid palate is bone dry with tannins popping out and caressing the gums. The finish is blackberry, tar and those delightful tannins. The mouthfeel on this wine is great, built for steaks or the pasta with meatballs and sausage I am about to serve. This wine will cellar well, it has al the right components. I really hope it can evolve with secondary flavors like it’s French cousins. Drink till 2025. 90 points and 4 stars for this gem from SA. Dark and brooding in the glass it shows off Blackberry and mint on the nose. The palate is very interesting. Black cherry pie meets blackberries and licorice. The tannins are delightful, packed just right. The mid palate gives off some plum jam but is quickly overriden by the tannins. The finish is decent in length and I am getting charcoal, blackberry and dark cherry notes. A well made wine that has some cellaring potential. We are pairing it with Flank steak and roasted asparagus. 90 points and for $19 is it a 4 star effort. It is a true Bordeaux blend, comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Salut….
