My third offering for the party was this absolutely stunning Second Growth from St. Julien. Another 92 pointer from the pro’s that get 5 stars from me and possibly 94 points. I’ve been hiding a case of this for nearly ten years and have been rewarded for my patience. More approachable than my other two offerings, the wine has hit its sweet spot where the tannins are absolutely gorgeous, melded and non-obtrusive. Dark brooding fruit on the nose and palate mixed with cedar-box and tobacco make this my kinda wine. I could sense some secondary earth and funk starting to emerge which gets me excited. I would say this wine will develop for the next 10 years and be fully mature by 2022- which means I can savor one bottle per year and watch the evolution. Ps. This was everyone’s favorite, including me.

Actually known as Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse De Lalande, this Second Growth Bordeaux was second in our party line-up. Another wow, that scored between 92-93 ( I would agree with that). From Pauillac, it is a slightly more feminine version of the two Pichon’s, with grace, elegance and poise. Similar to the Cos, it needs a few more years to settle the gorgeous tannins and embark on secondary flavors. Right now, fruity nose gives way to a balanced palate of leather, cassis and dark fruit. A long finish was slightly overshadowed by the tannins, which should mellow by 2014 and be in balance with it. Definite 5 star wine that is much more affordable than the 2000 version yet won’t disappoint. Love it.

bordeaux

We started our party off with this Second Growth Bordeaux. I bought a case of it many years ago and was waiting patiently for the right time- wow… This is some really good stuff that got very good professional scores when released. A suggested drinking window from 2010-2030 isn’t far off, but my opinion is that it will start to please the palate by 2014. The tannic structure is beautiful, yet still untamed. On the nose, red fruits and leather? On the palate, very balanced with bluer fruit showing. A long finish and imperceptible acidity are hallmarks of this well made wine of excellent pedigree. Overshadowed by the 2000 vintage, ’01 wines from Bordeaux are approaching maturity faster and providing great value for money. A 5 star wine that I would concur is a 93-94 point wine. Only problem, I now have 11 bottles and not a dozen. Loving it!

bordeaux, st. Emilion

There are numerous Chateau Bel-Air’s out there. This one happens to be from Lussac, St. Emilion. From magnum, I popped and poured this 8 year old in hopes of brilliance. I am slightly disappointed, but still enjoying. Probably not expensive, it has been in my cellar and almost forgotten for 5 years. The initial nose is very interesting, yielding bluish fruit and a typical Merlot-from-the-right bank kinda smell. On the palate, the fruit doesn’t shine, slightly overshadowed by an imbalance of acidity, but good tannins. This one could last at least 5 more years and maybe flesh out a little to disperse the awkwardness. A guess at its price would give me s decent bottle worthy of 3 stars but needing some cellar time. If I were a pro, a solid 86 pointer and a recommended buy if the price is right.

bordeaux, st. Emilion

Birthday weekend and I pulled this magnum out from the cellar for a party. A quick review told me to put it back as the comments were not favorable and it is perhaps past it’s peak. So…. I opened it the next night and finished it the following. Being a magnum, it aged slower than the reviews, and showed typical St Emilion character. The tannins are washing, the nose is nice blue fruit and the balance is good. Not a stunner, but a good buy for $50 in Mag. The pro rating agrees with my 85, and I would give it 3 stars for its ability to hold my interest. It shows some restraint as expected of Old World wine and considering its age, pretty decent. I wouldn’t run out looking for it, and at $50, there are better deals.

bordeaux, merlot

From St. Emilion, this property has a strong pedigree albeit from a lackluster vintage.  90% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc, this wine is smooth, balanced and ‘classic’ in style.  It is not a powerful wine, but rather an elegant offering.  The nose offers nice fruit, the initial attack is somewhat subdued.  The mid-palate is balanced and delicious.  The tannins are poking around, not obtrusive, yet holding it together quite nicely.  The pro’s were all over the shop with this one- 92 from the boys at WS but a measly 15/20 from across the pond.  At ten years of age, it is at a typical Bordeaux drinking window and I doubt it will get better.  Another 3 years and it is over for this one.  I would give it 3 stars. PS. if you remember my previous post about losing a bet- I won one back, and this was the payoff.

Chateau Gloria, ’00

bordeaux, cru bourgeois

This past month has been nuts with Christmas, New Year’s and all sorts of parties and celebrations.  So busy in fact that Moxie had to postpone her annual ‘Fundoo’ party for the gals over at her store until the dust had settled and everyone could catch their breath from the hubbub of a crazy retail season.  We do this event every year and it entails digging deep into the cellar and setting up a fondue party for 15.  Always fun, this year was no exception- the only downer being I had to get up at 6 the next morning to catch a flight out.

Anyway, we kicked it off with a Magnum of Chateau Gloria from the famed 2000 vintage.  A Crus Bourgeois, it ranks slightly lower than the “Growths”, yet consistently delivers value and quality.  This bottle was stellar, opening with just the right amount of cassis, black cherry and tobacco that makes me love Bordeaux.  The nose was pleasing, the mid-palate round and balanced.  The tannins are smooth and evolved, perhaps peaking.  This wine is drinking beautifully right now and will last another 3-5 years.  Rated 90, I would give it 5 stars.  A good performer from the region that doesn’t overcharge and under-deliver.

Opus One, ’00

Opus one 2000

Perhaps one of the more controversial California Cabernet’s, this bottle was the ringer in last night’s Bordeaux episode.  Having served Lynch Bages 1996, Duhart Milon 2000, I snuck this little gem in to the fray and the results were overwhelming.  A joint venture formed in 1979 between Robert Mondavi and Mouton Rothschild the Opus One is blended in the Bordeaux style using the finest California fruit.  Heavy on the Cabernet Sauvignon they have deftly added Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec to round out the wine and produce something that I could only describe as “Fruit Explosion Meets Old World Elegance”.

The first whiff and taste of this bottle brought a unanimous exclamation of “wow, very fruity”.  At eleven years of age, there is no end in sight for this wine, the tannins are soooo good, gently edging the mouthfeel and caressing the amazing fruit.  Secondary flavors are yet to come forth, but I can sense they are lurking.  The pro’s trashed this wine as overpriced and underperforming for the pedigree.  With an official score of 90, and a lofty price tag, it did not sell well.  I picked up a half-case from ‘my guy’ to keep him sweet- thus ensuring future allocations of what I really wanted.  I am really glad I did….  I am giving this baby 5 stars, only because there is no six, and I reckon the pro’s would re-rate it as a 93-94 point wine.  A true shocker that has definitely rewarded my cellaring patience.  I think I have one more bottle-yippee!

bordeaux

A Fourth Growth Bordeaux from the famed 2000 vintage, this wine was number two in last night’s line-up.  Served from Magnum, and right after the ’96 Lynch Bages, it held its own.  Duhart-Milon belongs to the fabled Lafite Rothschild group and has a tremendous pedigree.  Blending about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with 30% Merlot has produced a balanced, smooth, fruity wine that is developing secondary flavors and showing it’s ageability with rounded tannins that are holding it together in a great form.  Typical Paulliac flavors of Tobacco, Cassis and Blueberries are enticing, yet non-obtrusive.  I did not get any acidity, which is interesting, as the wine has great structure with many years left on it.  I would think it is just now coming out of hibernation and will drink well until 2020 at the least.  Scored 90 by WS, I would give it 4 stars.

bordeaux, re-taste

If you read my previous post on this wine from Thanksgiving you will remember that I was a little disappointed.  Last night we had some friends over and I dug deep into the cellar, really deep.  We kicked off the night with the 1996 Lynch Bages, and I was really happy.  What I was expecting was there, the depth, complexity, primary/secondary flavors, and the tannins are holding it all together quite nicely.  Interestingly enough, I opened a 2001 Lynch Bages at my parents house for Christmas dinner and was really crushed, it was missing everything; fruit, tannins etc- until I figured it out.  I was using the wrong glass.  They are not red wine drinkers and thus have no decent stemware to handle such a beast.  Last night’s bottle showed beautifully in the BAG (Big Assed Glass, see previous post in case you missed it).  What a difference the correct size and shape will make to the enjoyment of a decent bottle.  Definitely a 5 star wine, and considering the bottle variation from Thanksgiving, this one would merit 94 points from a pro, which I am not.
