Labelled a Bordeaux Superier and hailing from the incredible 2009 vintage, high hopes were dashed with this one.  Bland, non-fruity and boring.  Mild tannins won’t last long, neither will any traces of fruit.  Superieur is supposed to mean something, and who could screw up in ’09 from what everyone said was the ‘vintage of the [whatever]’.  I’m not buying into that.  It is proof that many French vintners are living delusional lives.  You either make good wine or you pack up, sell the farm and move on.  The sad truth is evident, in an awesome growing year, all you have to do is let the grapes mature, press them and don’t mess too much, nature has done it all for you.  These fellas didn’t get the message.  Am I being harsh?  Perhaps, but there are many wineries making sub-par wines and relying on appellation, name and vintage to get sales.  Resting on these laurels will not last long.  I will be looking for better values in the New World.  1 star and not worthy of a rating if I were a pro.

In case you didn’t read my previous post, I found some of my old treasures being used as props in Moxie’s store.  The occasion was the Annual Holiday Open House.  This bottle sits well with me, remembering it as some awfully good 2000 Bordeaux.  The Bahans is the second label of famed First Growth Chateau Haut Brion.  Let’s put this into perspective for the uninitiated-  This is one level below the top notch stuff, wines that didn’t quite make the cut to be considered the finest.  Rated an average of 89 points, we drank it several years ago, perhaps a little soon, but I remember it to be sublime.   Wine this good has to be tried, the pieces fit together and the wine is super smooth, flavorful and worthy of 5 stars.  The pro’s recommended a drinking period of 2003-2013.  I think I hit it in the middle, when the fruit was evident yet the secondary flavors were starting to emerge.  Soft tannins were evident but not powerful.  Speaking of powerful, nothing says it more so than producing a Magnum, except a Double-Magnum.  I am a keen collector of large format bottles and love to pull them out at parties.  This one was in honor of the hard working gals (and hubby’s) who man Moxie’s store and keep the clients happy.  We do an annual “Fundoo” party at Christmas time and the good stuff just flows out…..  Stay tuned for more vintage finds!

0 stars, 80 points, bordeaux, re-taste

Second chance with this one- consistently a big thumbs down. Lacking in fruit, tannin and acidity there is not much going on here. No stars and s basic 80 pointer. Save the dough and buy something worthwhile. A big downer from the French.

bordeaux, st. Emilion

It’s never a good start when the cork breaks in half. Nor is it good when the wind has no nose. Did I mention the overpowering acidity on the initial attack? Or the lack of fruit? The tannins are here though….. Not an impressive wine for the extra cash I just parted with. 2 stars and a crappy 83 rating, if I were a pro.

To have and to hold

When to drink a wine…..  The dilemma presented to anyone with some semblance of a cellar.  If you have it, you want to drink it.  Who wants to hold on to something for god-knows how long before enjoying it?  Well, if you do it right and get the timing correct, you will be rewarded greatly, with “interest” I like to say.

Most wine bought in shops is consumed within hours of purchase, what’s the rush people?   If you only could realize the potential of the nectar if it had a chance to age for a while, but we are impatient and don’t like to save- anything.  In Spain, they kinda force you to respect the grape.  “the requirements vary between regions, but typically, when used on a label “Reserva” means that the wine was aged for at least three years in the cask and bottle, at least one of which must have been in the cask.  Those that have been aged for five years (two in cask, three in bottle) or more are labelled “Gran Reserva”. Gran Reservas are intended to be made only in exceptional vintages, but this is up to the producer.”  (Courtesy of wikipedia)  See, they actually cannot sell you the good stuff until it is at least somewhat ready to drink correctly.  On the other hand, the French sell a portion of their fine wines before they are even in the bottle, it’s called En Primeur and basically lets them get cash up front and you get a discount on wine that’s not ready yet.  Speaking of Bordeaux, I once bought 7 cases of the good stuff and the young lady helping me to the car asked if I was having a big party.  I responded, “yes, in about ten years”.  I think that confused her totally as she was just a cashier and not really into wine.  I have been steadily tasting these ’01’s and can say that I have been rewarded for my patience.

A famous wine critic recently wrote that he thought all wine would be better with 10 years of age, Disagree Mr. K.  Some wines don’t have the tannin (backbone) to last, nor where they made to last.  Winemakers can steer a wine into many different styles and the level of tannins can be controlled to some degree.  Nature is, of course, the final arbiter of the outcome.  Most wine is made to be drunk right away, because that is what we want in the 21st century.  We want our information, e-mail, stock quotes and wine right here, right now.  So, why make an ageworthy wine that people don’t want when you can use the same grapes and have an instant success?

May I advise you to buy some decent wine that the critics say has a potential to age.  Taste a bottle every year until you run out and you will become a convert.  Try searching out some older wine for sale, either at your local store or on the internet.  There are many gems to be found as most ignorant consumers don’t realize what they are passing up.

A cork with some "age" on it.... 6 years to be precise

Several years ago I came across this wine in my local shop, picking up every bottle of the ’95 and ’96 they had ($17). When I saw the ’03 I didn’t hesitate- albeit a tricky vintage, I still thought the wine would be good. J have Deplaedt the case for a while and opened them at yearly intervals. The picture was taken in the summer of a funked bottle, but last night’s example was more in line with my expectations. Whilst no ’95/96, the 2003 is starting it’s descent rather rapidly. The fruit is muting, the tannins very soft but still enjoyable. Unfortunately, this vintage doesn’t have the correct chemistry for a typical Bordeaux lifespan. Drink up if you have any, I give it 3 stars and estimate a pro rating of 85.

Having just arrived in Hong Kong, I went to the local shop to grab a quick bottle- not much to choose from. This 2008 Bordeaux was being offered in 1 litre for the price of 750 ml and being an ’08 I thought I would give it a try. Upon further review- WE gave it an 84 point rating. Agreed, nothing special here and for the price of $12, not a bad quaffer. Nuff said.

I really enjoyed this wine. Given to me by my best friend, I knew he had purchased a decent Bordeaux. 2003 was a weird vintage in the Bordeaux region, extreme heat led to high alcohol, unbalanced wines that could potentially fade quickly. The tannins on this one are slightly advanced for it’s age but this is a good thing. The fruit is transforming and the wine is balanced. A fine pick from St. Emilion.  4 stars- but drink soon

Opened this Magnum at a dinner party with much anticipation and concern. The 1999 vintage was not a strong one for Bordeaux, but after years in the cellar, and a quick read of some recent reviews- it was time. A little thin, but nonetheless a true Pauillac. The nose, mid-palate and finish were well balanced and the bottle provided much enjoyment. I would give it 4 stars and encourage you to drink up. The tannins are almost invisible, the secondary flavors are in full force and the nose is still somewhat fresh. A decent bottle!

A very early introduction to the “01 Lynch Bages.  Drank this one in 2009, and found it to be too young.  With another two cases in the cellar, we will watch the development very closely.
