$65, 3 stars, 90 points, bordeaux, st. julien

Continuing on with the Birthday weekend celebration Moxie took us out for the most enjoyable dinner at my favorite restaurant.  L’Auberge Chez Francoise has been a local fixture for over 40 years and is consistently the best dining I have ever had.  Their wine list is extensive and meets all needs, but I really wanted to take two bottles from my cellar for the momentous occasion.  We started out with the 2008 Brainaire-Ducru, which runs about $65 currently.  I did not write notes on the wines, only a memory of the experience.

I was a little dismayed at the thinness of this wine.  It should have been at peak but instead I found it lacking much fruit, secondary flavors or even much tannic structure. I enjoyed it for what it was and would give it 90 points and 3 stars.  We drank it with Braised Wagyu Beef Cheeks, then the salad course.  Salut….

$45, 3 stars, 90 points, bordeaux, st. julien

A Bordeaux from St. Julien- albeit not the greatest of vintages.  I was pleasantly surprised by this wine.  Deep purple color with no signs of aging.
Plums and cedar with thyme and sandalwood on the nose opened the way for some plums, oak and cassis on the initial attack.  Blueberry jam and rhubarb stew came across along with some long integrated tannins and balanced acidity.  90 points from me for this cellared wine which you can find for about $45.  Drinking nicely now till 2020 at least make this a 3 star effort.  Salut….

bordeaux, leoville barton, st. julien

Another fantastic bottle of Bordeaux, the 1996 Leoville Barton was very impressive.  I don’t have any tasting notes as we drank it several years ago and I stumbled upon it in Moxie’s shop the other day (being used as a prop!).  I will tell you, from recollection, typical St. Julien in style, very smooth, classic, balanced and delicious.  I would have remembered any major flaws, but non come to mind.  The tannins were ripe and ready, the fruit all-encompassing and the finish- strong.  1996 was a very good year for the estate, the wine has potential to last for many, many years (making me wonder if I drank it too early!).  The pro’s averaged 90 points on it, I would probably have given it 5 stars because I love all the LB’s I’ve ever had.  Priced at about $120 per bottle right now, splurge for a big date and you won’t go wrong.  This one happened to be in MAGNUM, ’cause that’s how I roll ladies.
