$15, 5 stars, 91 points, Aldi, canada, Ice wine, niagara on the lake, Vidal

I must say I’m intrigued- a sub $15 Icewine from ALDI?  Yup, Moxie and I went shopping there yesterday and I came across this little gem from Canada.  It has a beautiful pale gold color with high viscosity (10.5% ABV, but plenty of RS).  The nose has intense aromas of honey, apricot, orange peel, candied/sugared citrus rings, white blossom and yellow apple.  The palate is sweet with high acidity and a full body.  Rich flavors of honey, desiccated apricot, orange zest and a tropical note like candied pineapple.  It’s silky smooth and unctuous with the acidity really dominant throughout the journey to a medium length finish.  It’s a real treat, something that will go well with an apple tart or almond cake.  This wine may last a while, the structure is there and for the price- you may as well buy a case and watch its evolution.  I’m off to buy more in the morning.  Delicious stuff that gets 91 points from me and an obvious 5 star rating.  Salut….

$50, 5 stars, 94 points, canada, Ice wine, Ontario, Vidal

On a recent trip to Canada I purchased this Icewine.  It is made from the Vidal grape which is a hybrid varietal made by crossing Ugni Blanc with Rayon D’Or.  The berries are allowed to fully ripen and once the temperature gets really cold (-10C) the fruit is harvested and pressed immediately.  The grapes tend to be sweet as a result of over-ripening and when they are pressed, the frozen water inside the grape remains whilst the sugar is run off resulting in a very sweet nectar that is fermented into a low alcohol (9% or so) wine.  This winery is well known and their wine is delicious- dark gold and almost syrupy in the glass.  Aromas and flavors of apricot, honeysuckle, apricot and banana.  The wine tastes very sweet with low alcohol.  It is full bodied, unctuous, waxy and paired well with desserts of carrot cake and Key Lime pie.  I was a bit rushed in tasting but the next bottle will get the full treatment.  I paid $50 for this 94 point bottle that gets 5 stars.  If you like sweet wines, this is a must-try.  It is unlike a Sauternes as it does not have the Botrytis nuances- instead it is more fruit focused and leans heavily on the sugar content to deliver a delicious treat!  Salut….

$35, 5 stars, 91 points, dessert wine, Vidal, virginia

Golden brown in the glass, appropriate for a 13 year old.  On the nose it has hazelnut, honey, orange peel, quince and Marmalade.  The palate is quite tart with orange reduction, more honey, nuts, nutmeg and Cointreau.  It’s nicely balanced with acidity, fruit, unctuous mouthfeel and loads of orange Marmalade.  The thickness of the wine is really delicious, it gives warmth and body to the elixir.  The mid palate concentrates on the oranges, with the sweetness of honey and apricots.  The finish is medium in length but full on with more oranges, sweet syrup and some tart acidity that balances out the sugars.  91 points. Drink now till 2030.  Delicious, a real treat after all these years in the cellar.  Newer vintages can be had for $35 per half bottle.  5 stars.  Salut….

5 stars, 95 points, Ice wine, Vidal

That’s good!

5 stars, 95 points. No mincing here folks. I am totally blown away by this dessert wine. Rich, overpowering nose of gorgeous Apricot/sweet orange give way to a beautiful palate of unctuous honey and …… Dang- I can’t finger it. It blows me away, a really stunning wine. Amazing balance, tremendous finish and an unctuous mouthfeel that just begs ‘drink this!’.
I just finished a 20ml bottle- that easy. Just beautiful.
So far- MY FAVORITE STICKY WINE EVER…..
