Killka Malbec 2011

3 stars, 84 points, Argentina, Malbec

An Argie Malbec for about $12, this wine was decent but lacked any umph.  I love the varietal, generally finding that the fruit is very tasty and usually quite extracted (I know, goes against my whole finesse thing).  Anyway, this wine offered up some decent blackberry and plums on the palate that seemed to fade rather fast.  I did notice some tannic bite, but nothing obtrusive.  I am used to this varietal showing off some ‘fruit bomb’ charachteristics and I love the Malbecs from Cahors (France) where they refer to them as The Black Wines.  This was just shy of my expectations and I felt a little shortchanged.  At a modest $11 you should at least give it a go, perhaps with some burgers and dogs.  I would also suggest a few bottles in the basement for unexpected guests, they would enjoy it for what it is.  3 stars for an even 84 points.

3 stars, 84 points, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz

The local wine shop here is running a special on the Rawson’s Retreat series, so I picked up two of the offerings to try.  Not impressed.  Very basic in architecture, with straightforward red fruits on the nose and palate.  Little tannin and no complexity.  However, it does drink smoothly and will get big kudos from most people because it is built to satisfy the elementary drinker.  I wouldn’t call it a bad wine, plonk is more appropriate.  Serve with the most basic of dishes or alone.  The blend did mellow out the Cabernet Sauvignon somewhat, and I was surprised that the Shiraz was not the typical jam from downunda. I have to say I would probably buy it again if the promotion pricing is in effect, but at $13- a pass.  3 stars since it was $24 for three bottles, but only 84 points.

2 stars, 84 points, aussie shiraz

A blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon that hit well with the pro’s yet I despised.  I guess I just don’t like overly worked Shiraz, Aussie style.  Structurally speaking, it had all the right components for an easy drinking reasonable wine.  Tannins, acidity and balance.  Overly oaky in my opinion- it was dark purple in the glass.  On the nose- very ripe black berry notes that revealed plummy jam and berry on the palate.  Like I said, not my style of over-extraction.  For me 2 stars and 84 points.  The pro’s gave it about 87 points.

2 stars, 84 points, cheap and cheerful

A very basic red wine from California that won’t break the bank or impress the ladies.  Kirsch and bright cherry are about it from this sub $10 offering.  Not much complexity or backbone, just an easy drinker that I would not personally buy.  2 stars and 84 points.
