$72, 4 stars, 93 points, aussie shiraz, shiraz

This is the third installment in my 4 year vertical of Mollydooker’s Carnival Of Love.  Check back later for the finale, it’s gonna be the 2012..  I hate to sound like I’m repeating myself, but the wines are very close in profile year after year and yet they offer annual nuances that I find intriguing.  The 2011 had the same telltale inky purple appearance and the nose had the same basic components yet I also got cherry and violets on this one.  I grew up in Kenya where my mother started collecting African Violets, she does so to this day.  They have a unique fragrance that is unmistakable to me.  This wine had traces of purple.

On the initial attack I was amazed by the piercing blueberry core.  It was like I was slurping pure blueberry essence, but not the sweet kind- just magnified and intense.  Later on came the nuances of cola, nutmeg and some plum action.  This wine is super smooth and very silky with traceable tannins lurking in the background.  I did not notice as much acidity as the 2010 but the wine was totally in balance.  It’s funny how this vintage scored slightly lower with the pro’s yet I find it more appealing over the previous year!  I believe 93 was awarded by RP and I agree this time.  I paid $72 for it on my worldly travels and give it 4 stars.  I served this wine up with some Scampi Shrimp and Garlic Broccoli, a pairing I kind of regret.  It needs a nice leg of Lamb or perhaps a juicy steak.  I am starting to see a trend here that I will bring up on the final installment of this mini-vertical.  For now have a great Valentine’s Day. Salut….

$60, 5 stars, 93 points, port, portugal

I love Port, but never seem to have any lying around so I only drink it when out to dinner.  I bought two bottles of this Vintage Port before Christmas and gave one to my parents, they love the stuff.  I opened my bottle last week and have been sipping on it every so often.

Gorgeous stuff is all I can say.  Dark flowing purple in the glass it explodes with aromas of blackcurrant, cassis and earth.  Slippery smooth on the palate make this a treat to drink.  Dark plum compote and blackberry tart come to mind with some leather and sweet candy- like twizzlers.  A generous use of wood is balanced out with loads of fruit weight.  The wine is somewhat tannic, which I thoroughly enjoyed along with a balance of fine acidity.  I did not decant the wine but the bottle showed signs of residue in case you have one lying around.  The cellaring potential for this wine is long, perhaps until 2030 at the least.  The back label has a ton of information relating to maturation, varietals, etc.  I won’t bore you with the details, suffice to say it’s a delectable wine that finishes a nice meal in grand style.  93 points from me and a retail price of $60 make this a 5 star wine to be brought out for special occasions (mine happened to be a delayed Christmas season!).  Salut….

$45, 93 points, meritage

Mr. Leebering brought this one to the party, having stashed it in his cellar for a few years.  Unfortunately, it had an oxidized nose.  The good news is that the flavors were not too distorted.  This Red Mountain wine is a Meritage blend of 36% Cab Sav, 32% Cab Franc, 20% Merlot and 12% Petite Verdot- my style of wine!  A very smooth mouthfeel with black fruits and a coffee tinge on the initial attack.  Mellow tannins made it easy to drink with no hint of the 14.4% alcohol.  I wish this wine was not flawed as I feel it had the potential for greatness.  I cannot pass judgement on it as such but a quick look online shows a WS score of 93 making it a good value for the $45 price point.  Salut….

4 stars, 93 points, aussie shiraz, syrah

An iconic name from Australia that crafts some monumental wines.  Normally this varietal is called Shiraz downunder, yet Clarendon makes it in an Old World style and reverted to the Syrah moniker.  Unlike typical Aussie Shiraz, this offering is refined, understated and showing great class.  Plum compote, chocolate and some earth transcend from the nose to the palate.  Layers of fruit emerge in this complex wine and the tannins are ever so subtle, yet omni-present.  Extremely balanced and smooth, this is finesse at its finest.  Pricey at about $100, this is no Thursday night pop-n-pour.  I served it up on a Sunday evening with London Broil and roasted potatoes.  It would pair well with Lamb chops as well as by itself.  I believe that the pro’s ranged from 92-98.  I would give it 93 personally and 4 stars (Price taken into account).  I have three more in the cellar and will watch for further development, anticipating a drinking window from now until 2020 at the least.

5 stars, 93 points, Sonoma coast Pinot noir, vino Volo

The last of my Pinot flight… Here goes.
Wow, cherry heaven on the nose. Big time, in your schnozzola with the bing cherries-loving it. I might be a little premature here, 5 stars. This thing rocks. Red raspberry meets cherry on the palate, with just a hint of tannins- yum. Extremely well balanced with an ever so slight tint of alcohol peeking out tells me this wine is ready for the long haul. 10 years minimum, with some secondary flavors possible, I hope anyway. I would love to revisit this one in 5 years and then later…
Thirty seconds…. 30 and counting on the finish, amazing. This, people, is a New World David- capable of slaying any Old World Goliath. A very large wine with great potential and a 93 pointer IMHO. Well done you guys….
