Scheid ‘Odd Lot Red’ 2010

2 stars, 86 points, merlot, syrah

A bottle that was brought by a friend and served with some steak and chicken.  It took no time to sniff out the two basic ingredients here, Syrah and Merlot.  Without trying to be rude, my host asked what I thought of this wine…..  “Make-up”.  I can’t describe it any better, there was a certain fakeness to this wine that really did not agree with me.  On the other hand, it is an easy drinker that is a sure crowd-pleaser for what it is.  However, at $20 plus per bottle, a major pass in my books.  I really did not care for the almost candy-like flavor of the cherry and strawberry fruit.  The tannins were very slight, but the wine was indeed balanced.  I hate being a wine downer, but this one was just not for me.  Technically speaking, I would imagine it is an 86 point wine, but for the price- 2 stars.

2 stars, 84 points, aussie shiraz

A blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon that hit well with the pro’s yet I despised.  I guess I just don’t like overly worked Shiraz, Aussie style.  Structurally speaking, it had all the right components for an easy drinking reasonable wine.  Tannins, acidity and balance.  Overly oaky in my opinion- it was dark purple in the glass.  On the nose- very ripe black berry notes that revealed plummy jam and berry on the palate.  Like I said, not my style of over-extraction.  For me 2 stars and 84 points.  The pro’s gave it about 87 points.

2 stars, 84 points, cheap and cheerful

A very basic red wine from California that won’t break the bank or impress the ladies.  Kirsch and bright cherry are about it from this sub $10 offering.  Not much complexity or backbone, just an easy drinker that I would not personally buy.  2 stars and 84 points.

2 stars, 86 points, Sonoma Cabernet

Full on fruit up my snozzzz. Stewed plums and oakiness on the palate with a definite vanilla hit. I do not like this style of wine. It exhibits good tannic structure and a sharp acidity yet I feel it is just makeup. Something is out of balance for me. 86 points and moving on….2 stars.

2 stars, 86 points, Bierzo

Not sure about this one…. I had to do some research to get a better feel.
Initial impression was a simultaneous sighting of the 14% alcohol on the label and a “woohoo, this has got some kick.” I don’t like that in a wine. If a high alcohol content sneaks by, fair game. When it’s in my face, shame on the winemaker.
So, black currants and alcohol mix it up with some young tannins. The Mencia grape is either from newly planted stock giving a thin light wine, or in this case, old vines that produce darker more complex wines with aging potential. These gnarly 80 year old vines produced a dark purple offering that is just not my style. I love complexity, tannins and older wines but this one is disjointed. I have to disagree with the pro’s and give it 86 points. For the price, it comes down to 2 stars. I’m sure you may find it interesting and worthy, but not for md at this price.

2 stars, grenache, Priorat

The first bottle was old and flawed. #2 bottle was better, albeit funky. Wet dog aroma thankfully gives way to vegetation and spicy red currants. Still tannic, it befuddles me because this wine is past it’s prime. Slightly out of balance, it’s not my fav. 2 stars.

2 stars, 83 points, carmenere, chile

I just couldn’t coax much out of the glass for a good whiff…. So I dove in. Slightly hot and our of balance, I’m not liking this wine.
Carmenere is usually made well, at a good price point. This one is disappointing. After a million swirls of the glass, I’m starting to make out dark berry and it transcends to the palate.
The alcohol is bothering me. 2 stars. I would give it 83 points if anyone cared.

Asprolithi Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

2 stars, 85 points, Cabernet

A first for me, Greek Cabernet. Very sharpish on the nose, with some primal fruit, oak and alcohol all fighting to get in there. My first sip was all alcohol, surprising as this one weighs in at a modest 12.5%. First impression, dump the bottle. But wait, perhaps I’ve been harsh lately, a certain crankiness overcoming my usual cool demeanor? I will let it rest for an appeal.

Now that the heat has blown off, showing much better. After a 30 minute wait, I am now getting some vanilla, raspberry and a slight vegetal thing on the nose. The palate has slid to the red berry side of the fruit scale and I can now make out a semblance of tannins. This is starting to grow on me, with perhaps a hint of plum mixing it up in there. By far not my favorite, striving for 85 points, I can only give it 2 stars. If it was $11 instead of $15 it would rank higher, but at its price- there are many far superior wines out there. I will chalk this one up to broadening my palate, and so should you.

D’Arenberg “The Footbolt” Shiraz 2009

2 stars, 85 points, aussie shiraz

When in doubt about a wine list, go with D’Arenberg.  Each bottling has the signature red sash across the label and I have never been let down- until yesterday.  This wine was just so plain and uninteresting I had to see what others were saying.  I am not alone.  It must be the vintage, because I usually see some good depth in this brand, usually well balanced and flavorful.  I got some red raspberry out of the nose, but not much transcending the palate.  Very little tannic structure leave me to wonder about the long term viability of this vintage.  A true disappointment, but I haven’t given up on the brand.  Like I said, a go-to-wine when confused about a wine list.  2 stars and 85 points.  Boo hoo…..

Burgess Syrah Napa Valley 2006

2 stars, 86 points, napa syrah

Syrah is also known as Shiraz and comes in many styles from all over the world.  In Australia, they make it in a jam-bolic style, in the south of France, a more restrained style.  In Napa, Burgess has gone old-world and made a soft and rounded style of Syrah that I would consider pretty decent for an everyday drinker.  However, the price of this offering versus the quality and value leave me somewhat disappointed.  Some fruit, little tannic structure and nothing to really stick out and say “pick me”.  I really wanted this wine to rock and roll, but it’s just not happening.  2 stars in my books.  I reckon an 86 pointer.
