3 stars, 84 points

Alas the evening was winding down, the good stuff was empty and this little Cabernet appears.  At first glimpse I was reticent.  After the first taste, not too shabby.  I have had this wine before, it is not on my list of re-buys.  However, it showed pretty well with some primal red fruits, a dose of oak and a trace of tannic backbone.  I was stunned, this wine was actually pretty good.  I am not sure if it was the level of ‘palate fatigue’ that I was being influenced by, but as an evening closer, it did the job.  I would say 84 points and for the low price of around $7-8 a 3 star wine that you need to have in reserve should the need arise!

3 stars, 85 points, Argentina, Malbec

Perhaps a little young, the tannins overcame the fruit on this one.  A green note along with blackberries on the palate was somewhat offset by an imbalance in the acidity.  I was not a huge fan of this bottle, and don’t see it evolving much even with its strong tannic frame.  85 points and for under a tenner, perhaps 3 stars.  It might do for a BBQ with ribs slathered in sauce, or perhaps a grea-zee burger.

3 stars, 88 points, re-taste, vinturi

From the south of Italy comes this almost black wine, made from Aglianico grapes.  I once had a waiter correct me on the pronunciation, which is technically “ahl-YAH-nee-koe”.  He insisted that it was Ag-lee-a-nicko.  His tip was commensurate to his wine knowledge…..

Anyway, I digress.  Aglianicos are tannic monsters, and this particular wine was tighter than a drum.  I had to pry it open with my Vinturi just to coax any semblance of juice from beneath its lurking , brooding shell.  Once there, it showed off some really nice blackberry and bramble.  A hint of earth and some flowers were noticed.  Extremely tannic, almost like painting your teeth with purple tannins, yet surprisingly fresh.  This wine is already 5 years into its aging and is still an infant.  The acidity is setup for long term cellaring, which should allow this wine to evolve, mellow and show itself much better.  It would be unfair to judge it too soon, however- 88 points initially and 3 stars for now.  I have more, and will re-taste them in the future after a severe decanting for several hours.

If you have never had an Aglianico, they are really delicious when ready, very similar to Tannat and perhaps Nero D’Avola from Sicily.  I enjoy these varietals as off-the-beaten path wines, they offer intrigue and spice up my cellar.

3 stars, 84 points, Argentina, Malbec

An Argie Malbec for about $12, this wine was decent but lacked any umph.  I love the varietal, generally finding that the fruit is very tasty and usually quite extracted (I know, goes against my whole finesse thing).  Anyway, this wine offered up some decent blackberry and plums on the palate that seemed to fade rather fast.  I did notice some tannic bite, but nothing obtrusive.  I am used to this varietal showing off some ‘fruit bomb’ charachteristics and I love the Malbecs from Cahors (France) where they refer to them as The Black Wines.  This was just shy of my expectations and I felt a little shortchanged.  At a modest $11 you should at least give it a go, perhaps with some burgers and dogs.  I would also suggest a few bottles in the basement for unexpected guests, they would enjoy it for what it is.  3 stars for an even 84 points.

3 stars, pinot noir

Served at a party last night, I was somewhat surprised that they still had any 2006 vintage left.  I have probably had this wine, years previously and well before I started to take notes.

A decent reddish hue in the glass showed off some strawberry notes in the nose.  On the palate, I got some strawberry and plumish notes, pretty un-Pinot like.  Perhaps the bottle was trying to further develop after 7 years, but in what direction?  The wine did not taste over-the-hill, yet I sensed it has seen its peak.  Still tasty, just in a different way. I did notice good balance and there was a slight tannic content still lurking.  This wine is not expensive, yet delivers good value and is generally a decent Pinot Noir.  I hesitate to rate it but think in its day it would have been a solid 3 star wine.

3 stars, 91 points, st. Emilion

A St. Emilion Grand Cru from the heralded 2009 vintage that is predominantly Merlot based.  Delicious, fruity and possessing 10+ years of aging capacity, shame about the price though.  Solid purple in the glass, it offered up a nose of blueberry and black fruits.  On the palate, some oak integration to go along with a cassis and spice concoction.  Very nice tannic framework is allowing this relatively young wine to be enjoyed now, but giving it the ability to last.  Somewhat complex, this is a good wine, worthy of 91 points easily , but 3 stars for its $30+ entry fee.  It’s a shame as I reckon a case of this in the cellar would reward your patience: one bottle/year so you could watch its evolution would be rather fun too.  Oh well, yet another reason to seek out the excellent 2009 vintage from the Bordeaux region.

3 stars, 88 points, Barossa Shiraz

I have had this label many vintages ago and it rings well for good value and taste.  Not overly done, it is also far from restrained.  Offering up black pepper, blackcurrants and some oaky smokiness.  It is rounded in the mouth and the tannins are very smooth.  For $15 you are getting an excellent party wine that will impress yet not break the bank.  I imagine another 5 years is tops for cellaring and it might benefit from a few of those.  I reckon 3 stars and 88 points for this Barossa offering.

3 stars, 90 points, zinfandel

I hate it when the host waits for us to get half-in-the-bag before pulling out a really good (read expensive) bottle.  Well, that’s what happened, yet again.  The facts:  I did not buy this so I had to look it up, $40 ish.  Pro points- 90.  Blend: 51% Zinfandel, 19%Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, 12% Petite Sirah and some Charbono and Grenache to finish it off.

My take, initially….. in-your-face-Cali-Cab, fruit forward, New World bomb.  I instinctively thought Napa Cab overdone, but now realize it was the ripe Zinfandel that was leading me astray.  Dark purple in the glass, a huge blueberry nose leads into a blackberry and fruit compote palate.  This is not my style of wine, way over-extracted and too much fruit.  It was miraculously balanced and slightly tannic.  Miraculous in the sense that you have to work really hard to mess with very ripe fruit, extract the last ounce out of it and still maintain acidity balance and control the alcohol (It weighs in at a whopping 15.2%, yet it is well cloaked- beware).  The tannins are much more subdued than I had expected of such a young wine, perhaps the Zinfandel is the culprit again.

The wine has a long finish that translated back into a certain blueberry note that I enjoyed.  Overall though, a 3 pointer for me.  I would have guessed at 90 points and agree with WS.  For $40 there are others out there I’m afraid.  If you like highly extracted (I don’t mean complex or heavy) wines that are really fruity, this might fit right up your alley.  For me, I prefer a little finesse and slightly lower alcohol.

3 stars, 90 points, napa cabernet

On the nose, distinctive aromas of spice.  Dark purple in the glass, the spice shapes up on the initial attack and comes in with some plum flavors as well.  Very ‘sharp’ tannins are intriguing, as well as tasty.  The finish was long on this one and I really enjoyed it.  I think it has good aging potential and will mellow in three years to be quite delicious.  The wine is well made and warrants 90 points but for the price, I am giving it 3 stars.  I would cellar some bottles and drink them with juicy NY Strip steaks and sauteed mushrooms.

3 stars, 88 points, st. Emilion

I don’t normally pop and pour such young Bordeaux, but this vintage was stunning and has produced some really tasty early drinkers. A St. Emilion blend of 75% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Cabernet Franc (love that grape..). Too young I’m afraid. But I managed to massage the wine with my Vinturi, artificially aging it in the process and softening the tannins.
On the nose, blueberry and coffee lead into a tannic blueberry and earth on the palate. The tannins are very strong with this one, yet they are smooth. This bodes well as the wine has a backbone on which it can age. I cannot however find much complexity, so where it evolves is anybody’s guess.
I lit the charcoal tonight and served up some searingly spicy Jerk Lamb to which I figured this wine would match- I was correct. Most red wines cannot hang with spicy foods, especially Indian. The lamb, well trimmed and charred on charcoal, was fatty enough to warrant a tannic monster, yet was not overpowering on the spices to dull the fruit of this wine.
Post-dinner, I had the opportunity to swirl this wine some more, trying to coax additional notes. The bottle has been open for almost two hours and I am still getting loads of earth on the nose. On the palate there is a nagging alcohol compound that is worrisome. The tannins are searing now, really coating my gums. Overall, this wine has aging potential, yet lacks depth. It has tasty fruit, yet one dimensional. I can’t give it more than 3 stars and fathom it’s worth 88 points. Drink from 2015-2020.
