$75, 5 stars, 92 points, cabernet sauvignon, napa cabernet

An iconic wine from Mr. Leebering’s cellar, this was my last wine of 2013.  A hefty $30 corkage was levied at our New Year’s eve dinner, but well worth it.  It was hard to delineate the color of this wine in the dark lit restaurant, but it sure smelled good.  Plums and black fruits were interlaced with an oaky infusion and some leather.  This mature Napa Cabernet was very smooth and displayed great balance of acidity and fading tannins.  The length was impressive and the wine had a surreal earthiness to it. I believe this wine runs in the $75 range and I am going with 92 points.  This is the type of wine that really rewards cellaring and goes great with steaks.  I am going 5 stars on this wine.  Happy New year and Salut….

Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

$55, 5 stars, 91 points, Cali cab, napa cabernet

I picked up some Swiss Chard as part of the Paleo ingredients for tonights dinner.  Moxie warned me that it would be bitter which gave me pause to think of a good pairing.  Turns out she was incorrect- the Chard was superb, crunchy, full flavored as well as balanced.  I de-stemmed the leafs, washed the bright red stalks and rinsed the rich green leaves.  Sauteing the thicker stalks and garlic in some European butter, I added the leafy parts right before serving.  It was a great new revelation in our quest for new foods to eat following the caveman diet.

Back to the wine….  I absolutely love the ’96 Burgess and think it is a well developed Cabernet that shows great evolution and firm structure.  I have built up a few bottles of various vintages, hoping for replicas.  Having tasted this particular vintage about two years ago, I was somewhat disappointed with its development and banished the remaining bottles  to the cellar.

With tonight’s menu, I felt I needed a fruity yet somewhat mature Cabernet to do battle with the potential bitterness awaiting us in the sauté pan.  I picked the Burgess as I felt it would fit the profile.  It worked, but it need not have bothered- as I mentioned the Chard was great and did not reflect the anticipated dryness.  The wine however showed great length and purity.  A young purple color in the glass followed by a gorgeous plum and black fruit nose gave way to a smooth tasting Cali Cab.  Dark fruits and cedar mixed with some leather and funk.  Seriously smooth tannins caress and the whole thing is on tip-toe, balanced impeccably.  I truly wonder how great this wine could be if given another 5 years, i’m guessing it will evolve like it’s big brother the 1996.  I am super stoked that I opened this wine and uncorked a monster in the bottle.   It is refined, yet powerful, fruity but svelte, satisfying and alluring.  I dig this wine.  I used to be so anti-Napa, but Burgess really opened my eyes (palate).  I have come to appreciate the longevity, finesse, fruitiness as well as the evolution of the better wineries.  For $55, you can still find this wine out there.  Not a bargain, it will reward you for many years to come as it is just starting its way towards the secondary life of tertiary flavors.  5 stars because I reckon this is a 91 point effort. Salut….

Carpe Diem Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

4 stars, 91 points, napa cabernet

A younger, more primal version of the Carpe Diem 2009 I tasted several months ago.  Much more Blueberry and less plums than the older brother.  Strong aromas of the berry and a hint of oak came through for me.  On the initial attack, the fruit was somewhat sidelined by the young tannins.  Almost mouth-puckering, these will have to meld over the next two years for this wine to really shine.  It is too young to really appreciate, yet I believe it will fill out, mellow out and really soar to a potential 91 point finish.  I bought this bottle for $25, and think it would be a 4 star wine after being cellared for 2+ years.  It should last well into 2020.

5 stars, 91 points, napa cabernet

I ordered this bottle on our recent Napa trip to pair up with Duck Confit.  Three words come to mind when I think of this Napa Cabernet Sauvignon…….  Atypical, amazing and obvious.

Atypical because this wine does not follow the Napa Cab profile.  It offers delicious Napa fruit, but in a Bordeaux style, with cassis, tobacco and a hefty plum flavor.  On the nose there is a huge amount of blue fruit.  Fine grained tannins and a balanced acidity make this easy to drink, very smooth.

Amazing, because value for money this one is a home run.  At $25 or less you are getting at least 91 points IMHO of excellence.  This wine paired up to the duck with no effort, it would easily handle a juicy New York strip and I would even serve roasted chicken with it.  Talk about versatile.

Obvious, well that stems from the fact that I was so impressed with this wine that I had to research it some more- the winemaking team behind Dominus make this as a second-second label.  Now that I know the pedigree and the lineage, it resembles it’s big brother Dominus, but in a softer, more approachable way.

5 Stars for its value and flavors, 91 points as mentioned on its technical merit.  I am on my way to the local store, hoping for a case or two….

2 stars, 90 points, napa cabernet

Taking one whiff of this wine reveals all.  Napa Cabernet done in a fruit forward style.  Jammy plums and red currants closeted in an oak drape.  A powerful wine that probably needs some time to integrate and take on some secondary flavors.  Right now, the tannins are delicious and will hold it together for a while.  Excellent acidity bring the package in nicely, yet I am somewhat bothered by this style of wine.  I prefer seduction and finesse as you know.  If you like it in your face, this is one for you, but take warning.  It is priced at $75 and only got a 91 point pro rating.  I would only go with 90, and considering the price and style, 2 stars.  This is a big commitment, I can think of many better uses for the cash.

3 stars, 90 points, napa cabernet

On the nose, distinctive aromas of spice.  Dark purple in the glass, the spice shapes up on the initial attack and comes in with some plum flavors as well.  Very ‘sharp’ tannins are intriguing, as well as tasty.  The finish was long on this one and I really enjoyed it.  I think it has good aging potential and will mellow in three years to be quite delicious.  The wine is well made and warrants 90 points but for the price, I am giving it 3 stars.  I would cellar some bottles and drink them with juicy NY Strip steaks and sauteed mushrooms.

3 stars, 89 points, napa cabernet

A muted nose (too young??) gives way to a medley of ripe young berries on the palate. Spice and cherry come through as well. The tannins are fine grained and sharp, albeit young. I feel this wine will open up in three years and mellow out to be a beauty. Right now, a babe, stick it in the cellar. 89 points and 3 stars.

5 stars, 89 points, cabernet sauvignon, napa cabernet

A very decent offering from Napa that won’t break the bank.  A nice nose full of blue fruits gives way to a blueberry infused compote on the palate.  Very slight tannins are set up nicely for immediate drinking that will last until 2015 at least.  I must say, it’s rather ‘juicy’, which is perfect for me right now.  They have a done a great job with this wine.  For QPR, it doesn’t get much better than this.  A good buy for just about any occasion that balances pleasure, drinkability and budget.  Bang for the buck gets this one 5 stars and perhaps a pro rating of 89-  go get some…..

3 stars, 90 points, napa cabernet, vino Volo

Walk into any high-end steak house and this wine will be on the list. No doubt a quintessential California Cabernet from Napa Valley, I have high hopes for this one, but am concerned about its youth. Here goes.

Donkey? Earth? Not sure, but this nose is intriguing the hell out of me. Help…..
On the palate, a strong wine, and way too young. The tannins are good, but not overpowering, which allows the plummy taste to come through with some blueberry. I cannot make out any hint of imbalance, this is a well crafted wine, and the alcohol is non-intrusive. I think it’s a good wine, probably just a little too ordinary for me. For the buck, not enough bang unfortunately. I am torn between 4 stars for quality and 3 stars for its QPR. Being a rather pricy offering, I would cellar two or three bottles for at least five years, perhaps patience will be rewarded. Even though I may pass on this, I think it is worthy of 90 points.

A gorgeous nose of pure dark fruit that translates well to the palate. Strange as it may be, not many wines smell like they taste. Is this a good thing?
Purity is descriptor here, with some really delicious tannins to boot. The fruit has precision, with some plum? It’s hard to tell as the tannins, nice as they are, distract me.
Generally a decent wine that I believe has good collaring potential and will balance itself out over time. A unique Napa Cab that I want to give 4 stars to, and would guess at a 90 point rating.
