$25, 3 stars, 89 points, paso robles, petite sirah

From Paso Robles comes this dark, extracted purple Petite Sirah.  I am always on the hunt for decent wine from this varietal and this one happened to be on special at the BevMo.  Normally priced at $25, it was basically BOGO- $12.5 making it a steal.
Purple fruits and bramble on the nose woke me right up to the fact that this was a rich and powerful wine, just how I like them.  On the palate a thick pasting of Asian plum, ginger and rawhide with mild tannins and a background of acidity. Nice mid palate of jam and rhubarb that gave way to a nice mid length finish.  I’m going with 89 points and 3 stars.  It’s well worth a visit if you can get it on sale.  Salut….

$17, 3 stars, 87 points, grenache blanc, muscat, paso robles, riesling

The third wine from Jettlynn that I purchased at Costco for about $17.  Pale yellow with a citrus nose and perhaps a touch of yeast welcomed me.  A creamy mouthfeel of green pear, yellow apple and cardamom. An interesting blend of 65% Grenache Blanc, 15% Muscat, 10% Chardonnay and 10% Riesling.  Mild acidity and a decent finish for 87 points make it a solid 3 star wine in my books.  12.9% alcohol was light and refreshing.  This wine would rock some blackened fish, perhaps a brick oven white pizza….mmmm.  Non-vintage from Paso Robles.  Salut….

$17, 3 stars, 89 points, Cabernet franc, paso robles, petite sirah, petite verdot

I forgot to not the vintage and the picture does not show it so I am going with NV.  I bought it at Costco for $17, but the winery advertises it at $70.  Wow.

Anyway, I have tried the Jettlynn Cabernet Sauvignon before and was happy with it.  I was looking forward to this bottle as it blends together many of my favorites, Petite Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah amongst the staples of Cab Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.  Purple hued with a nose of violets, blackberry jam and eucalyptus.  A fresh and tannic intro of black berries, cinnamon, plum and orange peel. Young tannins are still integrating but it won’t stop you from popping it with some grilled lamb. Not much acidity, which makes me curious about its cellaring potential. 5 years?? 89 points and very tasty.  For the $17 its a no-brainer 3 star wine.  Get some if you see it for that price.  Salut….

$30, 3 stars, 90 points, paso robles, zinfandel

From Paso Robles comes this high powered Zin.  It got panned by the pros but was the hit of the night at our gathering.  It can be found for $30 and was immensely enjoyed with some Veal Saltimbocca and carpaccio salad.  I find many Zins to be too jammy, this one was not.

Dried herbs, black currants and spice on the nose were a preview of what to expect.  Spicy components mixed with dark plums and black cherry were the welcoming taste.  The 15.2% alcohol was masked in the myriad of dark fruits, cinnamon notes and espresso.  Delicious tannin structure coupled with some acidity gave it a nice mouthfeel.  It went really well with our meal and I would cellar this for drinking 2015-2020.  90 points versus the pro’s at 86.  3 stars for me.  Salut….

$17, 3 stars, 89 points, cabernet sauvignon, Cali cab, paso robles, paso robles cabernet sauvignon

I bought several variations of this winery’s offerings at my local Costco.  $17 for a Paso Cabernet, I had to try it!  I was a little concerned at first, the cork was very stained almost to the top.  My fears were later put to rest.  Bright purple color in the glass.  Blackberry and iodine nose which was very unique.  Interesting mix of raspberry and oregano with black fruits on my first sip.  Good acidity gives this wine structure while the tannins are subdued. It finishes with raspberry and cherry cola flavors.  Tasty and fun Cabernet that gets 89 points and 3 stars from me.  Check them out some time.  Salut….

The offending cork, turned out to be okay after all.

Cabernet, paso robles

From Paso Robles, this reasonably priced offering will be sure to please in a casual drinking atmosphere. For $10, you get a basic wine that gives loads of dark fruit, easy going tannins and a pleasant mouthfeel. Not complex, I would serve it all day long at a grilling party. With decent acidity and the fullness of fruit, I think it is a good 3 star effort worthy of 85 points. Don’t cellar this one, as it was meant for pop-n-pour pleasure.

4 stars, 82 points, cabernet sauvignon, california, paso robles

A few of my colleagues gathered for a little Christmas cheer upon our arrival in Hong Kong and this was the first of many bottles to be opened.  Very primary in fruit with a decent nose and mid-palate it offered no sign of aging potential.  A decent way to start out as it was not heavy, complex or overpowering.  Very reasonably priced, this one is a sure winner for informal drinking or large parties.  From a pro standpoint, perhaps an 82 rating but I’m giving it 4 stars for being a good QPR player.
