$10, 3 stars, 85 points, cabernet sauvignon, california

If you read my post on the Santa Ana disaster, it leads into this wine.  My buddy bought two bottles of the nasty stuff and returned one the next day.  They offered him this bottle as a replacement so I don’t know the value of it.  A lighter shade of red in the glass and some hints of raspberry on the nose.  On the palate I got red cherry and strawberry with some earth.  Not my favorite profile for a Cab Sav but I was willing to roll with it.  Nice mouthfeel yet not very complex.  I don’t think this is a serious/expensive wine yet it was intriguing.  Suffering from jet lag and hunger we polished it off and headed out for dinner.  If this was a $10 bottle I would give it 3 stars.  I reckon it is an 85 point wine and think you may enjoy it as an aperitif.  I can’t quite pick a pairing because of the somewhat strange flavors for the varietal, best to be drunk by itself I reckon.  Salut….

$9, 3 stars, 85 points, Argentina wines, malbec-syrah

We tasted this wine next to it’s stablemate, the Tilia Merlot.  For me, Malbec is supposed to be very fruity, rich and sometimes jammy.  Syrah has a far greater flavor profile and draws a lot from the terroir where it is grown.  The combination of the two is somewhat bedazzling.  I can’t really enjoy the Malbec side, and the Syrah portion is not to my personal taste.  It does however offer up some decent fruit for the measly $9 price tag.

Darker purple than the Merlot, this wine had a more candied nose of red fruits.  On the palate, raspberry and earth with a touch of cafe’.  There was a slight sweetness to the wine, but nothing off-putting.  The tannic structure is decent as is the acidity.  I think I prefer my Malbec served straight up, no mixing.  Syrah is a wonderful grape by itself or in company with more traditional blends.  I  will look for the pure Malbec from this winery to see the difference, stay tuned.  85 points and 3 stars from me for this effort.  Salut….

$15, 3 stars, 85 points, barbera, langhe, nebbiolo

From the Langhe region in Piedmont comes this Nebbiolo/Barbera blend.  Big Horn’s wife Ronny brought this offering to the weekend retreat.  Typically Nebbiolo is a fruity and full flavored grape that matures to a Burgundy-like silkiness after a few years in the cellar.  Barbera is a lighter more acidic grape with lower tannin levels.

This particular wine was rather thin on the flavor profile and did not have the weight I would have expected.  It was almost pink in color and very see-through.  Cherry-like nose and red currants came through on the palate with a touch of dryness from the tannins.  It was pleasant enough but lacked any secondary fruit and is obviously not built to cellar.  Ronny pointed out the hidden 14.7% alcohol on the label which did not show up in the glass.  I would have thought that such a high level would translate into more depth and extraction.  This wine can be found for $15 but only got an 85 out of me and 3 stars.  Unfortunately the retreat has ended and we dash back to reality tonight after the long drive home.  Salut….

$9, 3 stars, 85 points, cheap and cheerful, zinfandel

I have had this wine before, but never posted about it.  The nice lady hocking the wares at my local grocery store was not sure of the blend (damned temp agency people) but as she was looking it up I smelled the Zin in the sample she had poured.  Turns out Zin, Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Sirah make up this steal of a $9 bottle.

Very dark in the glass thanks to the heavies, it has a very fruit forward style, albeit not very complex.  Very straightforward aromas and flavors of candied strawberry and Maraschino cherries.  It finishes with some mocha and very little dryness.  This is a pop-n-pour wine as it has little tannic backbone and the acidity is mild at best.  It will serve you well at a large party and the lack of tannins make it an easy wine to quaff.  85 points and 3 stars for me.  I classify this as a cheap and cheerful wine that is widespread.  Salut….

Chateau Denisiane 2009, part trois

$12, 2 stars, 85 points, re-taste

I have written about this wine twice, both times it sucked.  The 2009 Denisiane completely underwhelmed me and pissed me off because I had bought a case on high recommendations.  I have given it some time to sort itself out (actually I was ignoring it).  Tonight, it came through, sorta.

After last night’s epic dinner of Ribeyes etc, we had some leftover meat and mushrooms.       I wanted to spice things up so I concocted a spicy Panang curry comprising the leftovers, peas, onions and sliced almonds.  The curry was medium hot on the spice scale and the ingredients melded beautifully.  I had no aspirations of pairing this wine well when I  came across it in the cellar.  Almost a ‘throwaway’ I figured it couldn’t hurt and besides- I was not about to open something good for the curry.

Regulation purple color in the glass it actually offered up plums and dark currants in the nose.  Prior to eating the curry, I tasted it and was not overly impressed.  Once I got stuck in, the wine surprised me.  The fruit actually sharpened, the tannins cut the heat and the acidity was beautiful.  I could not have paired a better red with this South East Asian dish!  After dinner I let my taste buds normalize so I could further evaluate the wine.  It was starting to come alive.  More dark plums and blackberry came across.  The tannins were quite dry and persistent.  The acidity was back to normal, which was good.

I panned this wine big time.  For $12 I thought it was crap and had no chance of improving.  I was wrong.  It has evolved and come out of its shell.  Still a very basic red table wine I think should now garner 85 points.  However, seeing as I had to work on it for over 2 years it only deserves 2 stars from me.  I would never buy it again, but actually look forward to the future evolution of what I still have in cellar.  Salut….

PS. I got most of the way through dinner when I realized that peas are not Paleo diet friendly.  Sorry Moxie, I cheated…..but not on purpose.

Wolf Blass Red Label Shiraz Cabernet 2012

$10, 3 stars, 85 points, Cabernet, cheap and cheerful, shiraz

Along with the 2012 Shiraz Grenache from Wolf Blass, I also bought this blend at the same time.  Priced at $10 each or in my case $14 for both.  Cabernet does better with Merlot, and Shiraz is a natural with Grenache and Mourvedre.  I thought this would be an interesting blend.  Red berry with some cassis came up and the wine was very smooth.  Easy to drink as it is made in a very fruit forward quaffing style.  I think I preferred the Grenache blend as it was more balanced.  The Cabernet seemed to be fighting with the Shiraz for top honors.  Still, a decent wine for the price that would be great for a BBQ or a picnic of roast beef sandwiches and potato salad.  For me, an 85 pointer with 3 stars.  Salut….

$10, 3 stars, 85 points, chile, merlot

From the Echeverria winery comes this Chilean Merlot priced at around $10.  Very Merlot-like and typical of the region.  Plummy, with currants and oak in the nose and  palate.  Not very complex, but for the price it’s a nice wine.  Good structure and easy to drink.  This was our second bottle in the tasting and was far better than the first.  I would drink this wine casually, but can’t seem to pinpoint an ideal pairing.  If you enjoy Merlot, try it.  85 points and 3 stars.

2 stars, 85 points

An Italian varietal grown in the Santa Cruz mountains south of San Francisco.

Very pale red in color and somewhat thin looking, this varietal is not a powerhouse blockbuster.  It reminded me of Rose meets Pinot Noir.  Strawberry on the nose and palate, with slight acidity and virtually no tannins noticed.  It was a decent drink for a hot summer’s eve following a day out on the golf course- refreshing indeed.  Having said that, it is pricey for the quality and I would only give it 2 stars and 85 points.

3 stars, 85 points, dessert wine, re-taste, sauternes

A dessert style wine from Bordeaux that is golden yellow in the glass.  On the nose, apricots and golden apples that move onto the palate with some honey and a touch of acidic bite.  Generally decent wine, but the tinge in the mid-palate was worrisome.  The wine was not overly sweet, but had a balanced residual sugar content.  Dessert wines are generally pricier due to the methods involved, yet I cannot remember how much I paid for this bottle.  85 points and if it was under $20, 3 stars.

(re-tasted on 10/20/13)

3 stars, 85 points, california

Dark fruit on the nose and purple in the glass.  Not overly fruity, this wine was decent and a good value for the price.  On the palate I got some earth, dark berries and a touch of oak.  Good mouthfeel, balanced and slight tannins made it easy to drink.  A basic California Cabernet for quaffing that I think should get 85 points and 3 stars in my books.
