4 stars, 87 points, cabernet sauvignon

Not widely available in my area, this was a gift from some South African friends. A nice gift at that. Extremely juicy, like make your mouth water juicy- which I find extremely appealing. The taste is a cross of dark blue fruit and vanilla. In balance, there is no harsh tannic feel to this wine and I suspect it is designed for early drinking. Smooth and appealing, it is sure to make any host proud to serve it. As a gift, I really enjoyed receiving it.
4 stars and I would give it 87 points. Really good stuff.

3 stars, 87 points, Malbec, Mendoza

A very predictable and decent Malbec. Good nose of plums gives way to Blueberry pie meets plum tort. Built for pop-n-pour, this wine will give instant gratification, except for the price. Perfect for a party, pairing it with stew would be awesome. Not a blockbuster, certainly not complex, it offers dependable decent wine. We ordered several bottles at a restaurant with several friends, everyone enjoyed it. Cheers with 3 stars. A solid 87 points if I were a judge.

3 stars, 87 points, grenache

A nice introductory nose of black berries that transcends onto the palate rather nicely. Not complex, acidic or tannic, this wine is a very easy drinker that will be sure to please. On the palate I notice some interesting wood, perhaps spiced by oak? Solid 3 points and I would fathom an 87 point score.

3 stars, 87 points, aussie shiraz

Atypical of regular Aussie Shiraz, this Diamond Label offering brings good value for money. A purple wine that gives off hints of blue berries. On the palate, plum and blueberry jam mix with very subtle tannins to give a nice mouthfull of fresh fruit. Decent at 87 points and 3 stars.

3 stars, 87 points, bordeaux

With plenty of cellar time, this wine is showing nicely. Slightly subdued nose of blueberry meets a sweet dust gives way to a typical Bordeaux-style palate. Blueberry, cassis and some leather co-mingle with ripe tannins to produce a tasty wine that is at its peak. Drink up to 2017, alongside a Ribeye steak as the tannins will meld well with a streaky cut of beef. 3 stars, 87 points.

3 stars, 87 points, Argentina, Malbec

I remembered drinking this wine before, and had to look it up here.  This version, the 2010, was far better than the ’09.  Fruity on the nose, the initial palate is ‘in-your-face’ with the Malbec.  This grape can be very fruit-bomby and this winery has not strayed far from the hallmark.  Plum and vanilla give way to a decent finish.  I would not consider this a very sophisticated wine, but am warming up to it’s potential as a party quaffer.  For the price, it gets 3 stars.  My guess would be an 87 point wine.

2 stars, 87 points, rioja

Polished a few of these last weekend out of my friend’s cellar, I thought they were ok. Just- ok. Dark red with a somewhat muted nose of red fruits that gave way to more red fruit on the palate. I did not not detect any oak, nor any flavors reminiscent of Rioja. I’m not sure if this wine is in a dumb stage, but I doubt it. The tannic structure did not reflect a huge cellaring potential, and the finish was of decent taste but not long enough. Balanced with decent acidity, I honestly could not tell you what varietal this wine was. I ended up finding it for sale online and was mortified at the price- hence the 2 stars it gets from me. I would imagine if would rate between 86-88 points. A major pass for the cash.
