$15, 5 stars, 91 points, new zealand, pinot noir

From New Zealand comes this stunning Pinot Noir.  Delicate in the glass, it had notes of cherry and cranberry with some earthy mix in there.  On the palate, extremely smooth and luscious with white cherry and raspberry flavors.  Balanced and tart at the same time it was refreshing and medium in body.  The tannins in Pinot are difficult for me to discern, but I felt that this wine was well made and would go the distance.  Made in a New World style that appeals to me I’m going with 91 points and for about $15 this is a must find 5 star wine.  Amazing stuff.  Salut….

$18, 3 stars, 87 points, merlot, new zealand

I don’t believe I have tasted a New Zealand Merlot, so this was a new one for me.  It was slightly pale in the glass and had an almost Pinot looking hue to it.  On the nose, some cherry and cranberry notes were detected.  On the the palate it was very modern in style with Kirsch and cranberry flavors.  Not overly dry, it had some decent acidity and was rather refreshing.  I am not sure of the typicity to region, but it was an interesting twist on Merlot.  I shall have to taste more of the varietal from there to get a baseline.  This bottle was on special for $9 but usually costs $18.  A crowd pleaser because it was easy to drink and different.  87 points from me and 3 stars.  Salut….

$20, 3 stars, 89 points, new zealand, pinot noir

A new world version of Pinot from New Zealand.  Pinkish red in the glass, it exploded with strawberry and cherry on the nose.  I usually prefer the Burgundian style of this varietal but every so often I come across a refreshing new world bottle that I appreciate.  This varietal never offers up tannins in the usual sense, making it hard for me to discern and predict aging potential.  This wine seems like it could go the distance yet it offers immediate bing cherry, strawberry and red currants.  The whole package is well balanced and easy to drink.   I found it for $20 and it gets 89 points from me and 3 stars.  Salut….

$16, 4 stars, 89 points, new zealand, Sauvignon blanc

This is what my mate Mr. Tormay requested at last night’s Korean/Cajun fusion dinner.  He is fan of the varietal and quickly ordered this without hesitation.  I got a taste in before he polished it off and was very impressed.  In the glass it was more golden in color than I was expecting.  The glass burst with cut grass, apple and tart lemon flavors.  My initial taste was overwhelming.  Cat’s pee (a normal descriptor for Kiwi Sav Blac by the way) meshed with cut grass and green apple.  The waves continued with some citrus and cutting acidity.  The wine had quite a heavy presence in the mouth which made it that much more interesting.  This is not a thirst quenching easy to drink wine, it is much more food driven wine that offers complexity and depth.  I really liked it and will look for it in the shops.  $16 and 89 points make this a 4 star effort for me.  Salut….

marlborough, new zealand, pinot noir

A delightful Pinot Noir from the Marlborough region in New Zealand.  The Kiwi’s are on the hunt to produce world-class wines and have given Sauvignon Blanc a real boost.  Their next major foray in the varietal wars is Pinot Noir.  This example, whilst moderately priced, ensures good QPR (Quality Price Ratio).  Unfortunately, it was drunk after some heftier wines and did not show as well as it could have.  It retains typical Pinot charachter and is very smooth.  The word sublime comes to mind, but that’s pushing it.  The tannins are very shadowy and in the background, just what you want from PN, but are there to help the wine age.  I would give it another 3-4 years and enjoy it with lighter fare, perhaps roast chicken, or ham.  My opinion, 3.5 stars and a respectable 86 points, if I were a judge.looks like a troll bead!
