Out to dinner with friends last week and this little beauty showed up on the wine list.  I love Petite Sirah, it is a highly flexible grape that always shows off great tannins, plums and ages well.  It is tannicly well endowed and never lacks for power.  This one was really tasty but my notes were rather short, we had been at it for a while.  Dark fruits and plum nose with vanilla.  Full on plum and vanilla creme pie with some ginger on the finish.  Balance in acidity and tucked in tannins.  This wine is drinking nicely now with 4 years of age but will certainly go the distance.  2014-2024  91 points and 3 stars for this $40 offering.  A yummy wine that will go well with grilled meats, pasta and of course some charcuterie.  Salut….

This is a varietal that I have fallen in love with.  Not a Sirah, nor is it petite.  The grape  is also known as Durif overseas and offers up hefty tannins with spice and plum being the main component flavors.  This particular bottle had a few years of mellowing time and it came across with black currants and plum on the nose with a nearly black complexion in the glass.  Licorice was very prominent along with black fruits and cola.  Sharp tannins and great acidity balanced each other beautifully on the mouthfeel and I really enjoyed the whole package.  I paid dearly for it at the Charlie Palmer Steak restaurant in Reno, but found it online for $30.  It was the final evening of my Reno adventure and was well suited to our Filet dinner.  91 points and 4 stars from me.  Salut….

I just love Petite Sirah.   It’s thick, powerful and in my face.  I also like delicate wines that ooze class and reek of finesse.  Tonight though is for the unabashed.  This wine is a serious dark shade of purple, a warning shot of what is to come.  Blackberry and creosote on the nose, in a good way.  Dark fruits and a jammy plum element hit me right off the bat.  The grape is full on with tannins and juicy acidity.  This is night 2 of this bottle and it is drinking beautifully.  Balanced with tons of potential make this a stellar wine.  Retailing at $12 it gets a solid 90 points from me for its depth and complexity.  You know what that means folks- 5 stars!  I am in need of a few more bottles for a dark and stormy nice with some chili, or a beef Bourguignon.   Cellaring for another 5 years would reveal a treasure.  Salut….

I have just returned back from a month in Asia, eating at restaurants and not having access to my own cellar.  Well, my first meal at home was a huge success.  Moxie threw together some Korean Short Ribs, mashed Cauliflower, Carrots and a Kale salad.  I needed a rustic, powerful wine to go with the multi-dimensional ribs which had been slow cooking all day.  I decided on the Christopher Creek from the Russian River Valley as I remembered it to be rather full bodied and high in alcohol, something I figured might help cut the fattiness of the meat.  I was spot on.  What I did not realize was that the wine has evolved since I last drank it 18 moths ago.  Smoother, more mellow and not visibly showing off it’s 14.3% alcohol any more.  The baby fat is gone off this brooding monster.  Dark purple and ready to go with black currant, black berries with a touch of cassis.  Very smooth with fine grained tannins and a good cutting acidity.  This wine keeps getting better and I reckon will further evolve, perhaps drinking well until 2018 at the least.  The pairing was awesome and my love of Petite Sirah has been cemented yet again.  I believe it used to retail for $33.  I am going with 91 points and 4 stars.  Salut….

The label says “Estate Red”, so I had to look up the varietals because I sensed Syrah from the get-go.  Mind you, I had just spent 19 hours on airplanes to get home from Asia and did not realize I was opening a $60 bottle of vino for a casual drink.  The Syrah was pronounced, with pepper and spice on the nose.  I thought I was drinking a Rhone red, not realizing that this wine was actually from the Sonoma appellation of Dry Creek Valley.  I guess I was really tired from my flight!  Turns out it is a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend (You may recall my love affair with the Petite).  I think that is what is making this wine so interesting and adding the nuances.

The pepper came through again on the palate with dark cherries, which threw me off.  Plums and blackberry also made an entrance.  The wine was all over the place, the profile was Rhone yet the cherry component was very Burgundian.  It was extremely balanced and offered great acidity.  Background tannins held it in check but I fear for long term cellaring.  The wine is a delight to drink now, but at this price it is only a three star wine that wears a 91 point rating in my opinion.  I am thinking it would rock a cheese platter and perhaps a pork roast or just by itself.  I would reserve it against a red meat dish as it shows a delicate side that needs some finesse.  Overall, a lovely wine that I think would offer great pleasure in the right moment with the right person.  Easy to drink, yet complex.  Salut….

Well, it’s Sunday night and we did things backwards this weekend.  Sunday Roast happened on Saturday and Ribeye steaks on Sunday.  I added the ‘make your own salad’ to our menu as I have some picky peeps.

SO- I picked a Petite Sirah to go with the steaks. When choosing wine for a fatty cut, I look for tannic wines or really fruity ones with plenty of acidity. Petite Sirah, of which I am a closet fan, gives both. This particular bottle showed off some of the prettiest purple hues in the glass, a beautiful sight. On the nose, tremendous waves of blueberry fruit and a somewhat exciting alcohol component. I was ready to pair the wine with our dinner. Crescendoes of blueberry and blackberry came rushing over my palate with an extremely fine grained set of tannins. I was looking forward to some slightly more edgy tannins to cut the fat, but instead I was treated to a healthy dose of acidity. The combination was magical. Instead of the mouth-puckering tannins sorting the beef out, I was treated to a more austere approach with the acidity making up for the backbone. Secondary flavors of stone and bell peppers added to the treat. Petite Sirah is an amazing varietal, not everyones cuppah. It is bracing, tannic, acidic and needs to made well. It offers black and blue fruit, big tannins and an a bright acidity. It does not resemble Syrah at the least. Give it a try, you may love it….. For $30, this is a great effort for a nice steak dinner and worthy of 91 points and 4 star in my book. Salut….

Really purple hue from this blend of Petite Sirah (love it already) and a Portuguese grape called Tinta Cao gives me a funky nose of chocolate and blackberry. On the palate, thin tannins reveal a blueberry and jam core of fruit. Not as prominent as the GSM, this is well made and balanced. A puckering after taste is long and delicious, giving this wine a bump in my books. 4 stars and. 90 point effort that excites me because it’s a different blend, and it works. Well done….

Had this last night at a 40th Birthday bash for a friend. I probably tried 7 different bottles and noticed two definitive variations in the bottles. Not a pricy wine, it offers up good dark fruit and a nice finish with a mild tannic streak. Not built for the long run, immediate pleasure is achieved with no expectations of further development. This is a perfect wine for parties, offering loads of bang for the buck. the two bottles that I noticed variation on had a certain earthy funk that got me excited. Was it perhaps oak? Or just ass of donkey- not sure, but I liked it. For sure a 4 star wine that would garner a respectable 88 points. I need to getsummm.

Neither petite, nor a Sirah. Similar to the Shiraz/Sirah grape, this varietal is my style. Dark, brooding, tannic, ageable and full bodied. This particular wine is 7 years into its life and is still a baby. Dark purple in the glass, the nose shows Berry and, dare I say it- alcohol. At 14+ % it packs a punch. However, smooth on the palate, with Cassis coming through along with a hint of red fruit. A very tannic backbone shows good integration and the promise of excellent cellaring potential. The balance is just slightly off with the alcohol, perhaps this too shall pass. I really like this style and am enjoying the wine immensely. 4 stars and 90 points. I forgot to mention ghd length, amazingly long. Not sure if you can find it anywhere though, pity.

I was a little puzzled about this wine, which was a gift. Unmistakeable Syrah was my downfall. I had to revert to a little Internet sleuthing to discover no Syrah, but a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. The use of the word Velvet is actually not too far off, it is pretty smooth. With not much complexity, slight tannins but a good balance- it goes down like velvet. Others did not like this wine or loved it, not many in the middle of the road. I am thinking four stars- its a damn fine drop for the price and for what it is. Drink it soon as the backbone was not made for aging, but for immediate pleasure. It has good acidity and a prolonged after taste, which surprises me. For about $10, you are sure to please a crowd with this gem that has gobs of dark berries, and a smooth mouthfeel. I would hazard a guess at 88 points on a pro level- I’m liking it. Well done you Cupcake peeps.
