$18, 1 star, 85 points, merlot, new zealand

Dark but opaque purple.  Nose has flavors of raspberry, oak and nutmeg.  On the palate, somewhat tannic and dry on the initial taste with red berries and an astringency that is somewhat overpowering.  The tannins continue the dryness onto the mid palate where I get some black cherry notes, but just barely.  The finish is one dimensional.  For me this wine is unbalanced and lacking fruit.  It could be in a dumb phase.  Right now I’m thinking 85 points and for the $18 I paid it is a pass and 1 star.  It’s a shame as I really enjoyed the 2014 Mission Cabernet Merlot blend which I gave 89 points to.  Salut…

Terroir la Baume Saint-Paul Fitou, Languedoc-Roussillon, France 2014

$16, 2 stars, 85 points, carignan, fitou, grenache, languedoc

By far the most interesting label of the year-  a metallic one on this bottle of Fitou.  I was intrigued and had to try it.  Fitou is a region in the Languedoc, southern France and the two main grapes are Grenache and Carignan.

terror la baume saint paul fitou

The wine is a medium shade of purple and offers a nose of garrigue, funk and black cherry.  This may sound horrible to the layman but in wine terms, quite legitimate descriptors and ones that are sought after by certain palates.  On the initial attack I am getting a somewhat thin veil of plums but more importantly, some off-putting tannins.  The wine is a bit disjointed and the balance is off.  It may need some time or a trip through the vinturi (Or in my case, a travel aerator).

Ok, after meeting my friend Bendy, the wine mellows a little but the tannins are still green and generally unpleasant.  The fruit is struggling for acceptance here and the structure is not allowing it to happen.  I am wondering if I have an off bottle.  Best I can go is 85 points at this tasting and for $16 this is a 2 star wine.  Happy New Year!  Salut….

$15, 2 stars, 85 points, bordeaux, france

I just flew across the country on United Airlines.  I chose this half bottle over the smaller, more generic offerings they had for sale.  2010 Bordeaux was a great year! This entry level red was hard to critique in the plastic airline cup but it looks purply enough! The nose is somewhat subdued due to the vessel but if I get my schnozzola right in there I get faint hints of pomegranate, some black berries and a touch of the plastic. My initial taste is quite nice- perhaps a bit rustic. Blue fruits and some plum stone. There are some good tannins swirling around intertwined with blueberry cola. The wine is slightly one-dimensional but is pleasing. It drinks well with some nuts and would pair with olives, a charcuterie plate or even grilled skirt steak. It gets an 85 point rating from me. Here’s the twist…. It is $16 for a 375 ML split, which equates to the same price as buying two of the regular, small bottles on United. Same price but a better wine that needs a corkscrew! I’m not sure how much it retails in the shops so I will guess $15 and give it 2 stars.  Salut….

$85, 3 stars, 85 points, cabernet sauvignon, napa cab

Mocha and plum nose that entices.  Initial taste of dark plum and black cherry with some ganache. Still young with firm tannins and crunchy acidity. Mid palate hints of  coffee and chocolate powder. Very dry finish that coats the teeth and gums which tells me this wine is a keeper.  I may have poured too soon.  It got 94 points from the pro’s but I’m going with 90 for now. 2017-2025 would be a suggested window to let the tannins meld more.  It lists at $85, which is rather steep making it a 3 star wine in my books.  Salut….

1 star, 85 points, Beaune, burgundy

If you read my first tasting note on this Beaune Premiere Cru you will recall that I hated it, giving it 80 points and 1 star.  I have a few more in the cellar and pulled one out for a comparative tasting after two more years of cellaring.  Not much has changed, unfortunately. I did some research and I must say I am confused.  It scored 91 points on average by peers on cellar tracker.  Vivino peeps gave it a good write up yet I can’t get my head around the muted nose of rhubarb and cherry pie which is too tart still with little fruit depth. Red currants and cinnamon finally showed up. I was kinder this time with 85 points, but that is generous.  A major 1 star pass for the money.  Salut….

$8, 3 stars, 85 points

I figured I should try this $8 offering, I was not disappointed. Black/purple in glass it exhibited chocolate, blackberry and oak on the nose.  Dark cherries and blackberry with crisp acidity and lengthy tannins followed through.  Slightly over-oaked with Maraschino cherry on the mid palate.  I can’t see myself buying it again, but it is a serviceable sub-$10 wine that one could quaff with ease.  85 points and technically it deserves 3 stars.  Salut….

$9, 2 stars, 85 points, Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon, cabernet sauvignon, margaret river

A Margaret River Cab Sauvignon we picked up for $9.  A casual afternoon watching football was on the cards so we added a wine tasting to the fray.  Blue fruit compote on the nose from the reddish purple glass.  Tart cherries and some oak with blueberries on the palate lead me to think of this as a basic, drinkable red worthy of 85 points.  It did the job, and well.  Basic components tell me that this Aussie wine will drink between 2014-2016.  2 Stars, Salut….

$10, 2 stars, 85 points, aussie shiraz, shiraz

There was a special offer on this wine so I dove in with my $10 and now regret it.  I will be honest, this is not good wine. Candied plums and strawberry skittles are all I could get from it.  A fake fruit flavor that does nothing for me.  Am I being harsh?  Perhaps, but this wine is a not up my alley, it may please many others but I am not a fan.  85 points for technical merit and 2 stars from me.  Salut….

$12, 3 stars, 85 points, bordeaux superier, Cabernet, merlot

A Bordeaux Superier from a modest vintage that did not break the bank.  $12 buys an everyday Cab/Merlot blend with tasty red fruits and some cassis.  The tannins seemed a little unripe to me, almost like they had let some green stems stay in the must a little too long.  The result was a slightly angular back end finish.  I would buy it again and pair it with a cheese platter and some cold cuts.  Nothing special here yet appealing for some reason or another.  85 points and 3 stars.  Salut….

$15, 2 stars, 85 points, Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon

This bottle came along after the Turkey dinner was over and we had polished off all the other bottles.  I was trying to figure out the basic flavors and I kept thinking ‘purple’.  I know colors don’t taste like anything, yet I closed my eyes and saw it.  The wine was a little jammy, with plums and fig dominating, hence the purple connotation.  A basic wine with a short shelf life as the cellaring components are not there.  I am giving it 85 points and for the $15 price tag, 2 stars.  Salut….
