australia, cabernet sauvignon, 5 stars, 93 points, $17, margaret river

Deep ruby with a touch of turbidity and some flecks of garnet in this 5 year old Cabernet from the western coast of Australia.  The nose has very precise, sharp aromas of black plum, blackberry, cassis, eucalyptus, coffee, mint, mocha and vanilla.  Very oak-driven aromas but it is hedonistic and I am looking forward to taste.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and medium (+) tannins, a full body and delicious flavors of ripe fruit and oak influence.  Blackberry, dark plums and coffee dominate.  Espresso to be more precise.  Eucalyptus is pretty evident as is the mint component.  The finish on this wine is medium in length and very fruity, making me realize that the tannins have really integrated already, ergo a very pleasant mouthfeel.  I like this wine a bunch and will be pairing it with Strip steaks off the charcoal.  One review went as high as 95….. I am more in the 93 camp, but 5 stars for sure as you can pick this up for $17, making it a terrific deal.  Drink till 2028.  Salut….

$13, 5 stars, 90 points, Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon, australia, cabernet sauvignon, margaret river

Very bright purple in the glass.  The nose has blackcurrants, oak and cherry reduction.  Intriguing.  On the palate I get a very delicious attack of black fruits- berry, plum, cherry.  The tannic structure is good, bracing yet not too dry.  The mouthfeel is really refreshing with some sharp acidity.  The mid palate has yet more of the dark fruits plus a mocha component.  The winemaker has skillfully managed to hide the 14.5% alcohol and slides some deft tannins in that really grip on the back end.  The finish is very dry, with black cherry and cassis.  The oak that I got on the nose has seemed to disappear up till the very end.  This is a very easy drinking wine that is ready to go right now and will last for another 3-4years.  I would pair it with lamb chops, roasted veg and perhaps Beef Ribs slow cooked in a wine reduction.  I’m going 90 points and 5 stars for this $13 wine.  Buy it by the case.  (One critic went 94 points, but then again he always rates high.)  Salut….

$12, 3 stars, 88 points, australia, cabernet merlot blend, margaret river

A Margaret River presentation with very dark purple appearance in the glass and a nose of ginger, plum, clove and vanilla. On the palate, youthful and bursting with blue fruits and plums. The mid palate shows off some wood notes and much more meaty plums. Mid range tannins and a very slight acidity make it an easy drinker right off the bat. $12, 88 points and 3 stars.  Salut….

$9, 2 stars, 85 points, Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon, cabernet sauvignon, margaret river

A Margaret River Cab Sauvignon we picked up for $9.  A casual afternoon watching football was on the cards so we added a wine tasting to the fray.  Blue fruit compote on the nose from the reddish purple glass.  Tart cherries and some oak with blueberries on the palate lead me to think of this as a basic, drinkable red worthy of 85 points.  It did the job, and well.  Basic components tell me that this Aussie wine will drink between 2014-2016.  2 Stars, Salut….

$20, 2 stars, 87 points, aussie shiraz, margaret river

A Shiraz from the Margaret River appellation in the southwest part of Australia.  Not my favorite style unfortunately so I might seem a bit harsh.  I   initially got bright purple fruits of plum and candied cherry on the palate.  Light in tannins but very fruity, almost too much so.  The acidity was lacking ever so slightly but the overall balance was decent.  I think this wine will appeal to many as an easy drinker but for my $20, there are other wines I would look out for.  87 points and 2 stars.  Salut….
