3 stars, 84 points, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz

The local wine shop here is running a special on the Rawson’s Retreat series, so I picked up two of the offerings to try.  Not impressed.  Very basic in architecture, with straightforward red fruits on the nose and palate.  Little tannin and no complexity.  However, it does drink smoothly and will get big kudos from most people because it is built to satisfy the elementary drinker.  I wouldn’t call it a bad wine, plonk is more appropriate.  Serve with the most basic of dishes or alone.  The blend did mellow out the Cabernet Sauvignon somewhat, and I was surprised that the Shiraz was not the typical jam from downunda. I have to say I would probably buy it again if the promotion pricing is in effect, but at $13- a pass.  3 stars since it was $24 for three bottles, but only 84 points.

Fox Grove Shiraz/ Cabernet Sauvignon NV

4 stars, 88 points, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz

NV means no vintage. Not a bad thing for certain wines, like champagnes that are blended from several vintages- but in red wine…….Makes me wonder. Then again, it is on an airplane, United Airlines to be precise, where I got to sample this little gem. Perhaps I’m being a little harsh, I have reason. Airlines generally serve crap, at high prices, it’s part of the deal. United in particular has tried to cut every cost. They must, or risk disappearing.
With that off my chest, this wine is not bad. Cherry candy on the nose brings some really tasty/chewy red currants on the decently balanced mid plate, fruitiness that has a good acidic component and even some puckering tannins.
Come to think of it, this I better than the crappy Smoking Loon they serve in First Class on United. I may have to decline the courtesy upgrade they gave me for next week.
Timing the aftertaste, a good 20 seconds or more. I have no idea how much this one costs, but I bet it’s bargain basement, and for that: 4 stars. Well worth it for a big party on a summers day, throwing down some BBQ. The Shiraz is not jammy, like too many Aussie reds, and the Cabernet gives it the structure it needs to pull the whole thing off. Kudos. I am taking a stab here and guessing it is worthy of 88 points. You should keep a few laying around in case the boys show up unexpectedly.

Jacob’s Creek Reserve Shiraz 2008

Barossa, shiraz

A Reserve offering from the Barossa in Australia that got a 92 rating. Not from me, of course as I’m no pro. I just don’t get it. Very light on the nose, the initial taste is of smooth, somewhat subdued Aussie Shiraz- which is a good thing. They usually present themselves in an over-the-top, jammy style that we are all tired of. However, there’s not much of interest here, nothing jumps out and says ” I’m worthy of Reserve status”. It’s just kinda ordinary. I can’t even pinpoint the flavors, but will say that it has a decent tannic structure and should hit stride by 2014-2018. What to drink with? Hmmmm, perhaps a fatty cut of beef to help balance the tannins and not overtake the flavors of the meat. It’s not really a sipping wine and weighs in at 14.5% alcohol- beware. I’m thinking a 2 star wine and my own rating of 86 points- a major disappointment. Sorry guys, just not in love with it.

Wolf Blass Shiraz/Grenache

australia, grenache, shiraz

The “Red Label” blend of of Shiraz and Grenache has no vintage, a 13.5% alcohol content, and nothing to differentiate it from the masses of ordinary Aussie plonk. On the nose, not much. On the palate, not much. Wait a minute, there is something…. Jammy Shirazy funk. I am really not sure why they bother, except there is a huge market down under for cheap Barbie wine. I’ve had their other lines, the yellow and black labels. This does not merit buying unless you are half-pissed already.
I was hoping for a little bit of interest here, considering the addition of Grenache, but alas, it is no Rhone Ranger. It is smooth though, with no tannins to get in your way, no complexity to make you pause, and an aftertaste that nags at you. Harsh? Perhaps, but life is far too short for cheap and nasty. Spend a little, live a little, and avoid this mass-produced garbage that gives Australian Shiraz a bad name. 1 star, and if I were a pro- 80 points, just because the label looks nice.

Yalumba Shiraz/Viognier “Y” series ’10

If you read my previous post about this brand, and the 2008 wine, you will know that I liked it.  For a further comparison, I bought the ”Y’ series model, from the 2010 vintage to compare.  Priced a few dollars cheaper, it is obviously slightly lower on the pecking order for this producer.  Don’t get me wrong, it is still good, just different.  More jammy, typical of Aussie Shiraz, the Viognier doesn’t seem to come through on this bottle.  The nose is telltale Australia, not quite as pronounced as the other wine.  The tannins on this one are more evident, probably due to age.  I can taste a slight acidity, which should disappear in a year or two as the tannins meld.  There is a surprising length as well, which I like and is a sign of a well made bottle.  I’m not sure what the percentage of each varietal is, but looking at the 14% alcohol, the lack of softness from the Viognier, I would imagine a 90-10 split.  Whilst I give this one 3 stars and probably an 85 rating, I would suggest it would be a great addition to any party or BBQ with some big, earthy meat.  Very good value from a consistent producer, thumbs up you lot!

Having been off Australian Shiraz for a while, I was stumped for a wine yesterday at the local shop.  Seems like the choices are slim, and the majority of wines were either cheap French or Aussie Shiraz.  Soooo, I ended up with this blend of Viognier (which I love) and Shiraz.  Hailing from the Eden Valley, they blended the two wines into something pretty decent.  Nothing jammy, like too many other Australian Shiraz, but mellow, thanks to the Viognier.  Good nose of dark fruit, and definite black-blue berry on the palate.  Unobtrusive tannins tell me this one is built for 5-7 years tops.  Seeming to be in balance, the acidity was neither present nor lacking, and the end result was a consensus that we enjoyed this wine and would buy again.  3 stars and probably an 88 pointer.

Junk, pure and utter garbage. Reminiscent of candy, mixed with juice, bottled, corked and shipped the hell out of Australia to some unsuspecting newbie. Very poor effort not worthy of any stars and a pitiful 70 point rating. I have never had such abysmal juice. The consensus was unanimous and we left half the bottle.

Not my pick, but will drink this one again.  The name implies the equivalent of reserve status, not so sure about that, but tasty.  I’ve had some damn good Shiraz in my time, and then I have had some real crap; this one fits right in the middle.  Quaffable, easy going, fruity and not too dry.  Australians like Shiraz, they like making it, they like drinking it and they like bragging about it (ala Grange and Henschke).  This one fits right in to a “Barbie”, something cheap and cheerful that will get you by and not break the back.  Not complex, yet compeling, with some stuffing to last another 3 years.  IMHO a 3.5 star effort with a potential of 85 points, in case you wonder.  Not bad for the dough tho.
