$17, 5 stars, 90 points, austria, grüner veltliner, Wagram

Pale lemon colored with a hint of petillance and medium viscosity (13% ABV).  The nose gives me lemon zest, peach, white pepper, orange blossom and pear drops.  The palate has high acidity and a medium to full body.  I’m getting lemon pith and zest now, there’s a slight bitterness.  The florals are there and the telltale white pepper is too.  The peach has mellowed and it’s more of a citrus affair now.  The finish is tangy, slightly salty and quite long in length.  I chose this wine as I am grilling Turkey breasts on the charcoal, I think the pairing will work as they are quite heavily spiced and need something sharp to oppose.  90 points for this $17 effort makes it a 5 star wine to drink till 2027.  Salut….

$16, 5 stars, 89 points, austria, grüner veltliner, kremstal

Pale lemon/lime colored with very slight petulance and a watery sheen (13% ABV).  The nose starts off with a spritzy lime zest, I can almost smell the effervescence.  White pepper, white peach, an amazing floral note of tropical flowers and orange blossom plus some vanilla thread at the very end.  The palate is dry with high acidity and a medium body.  This is a crisp wine with cut and a burst of verve from the pettilance.  I still get white stone fruit and some citrus but the florals are missing.  I can feel rather that taste the white pepper which is an interesting opening.  The finish features the effervescence as it tingles the underside of my tongue.  It goes on for a while and is intriguing.  I picked this wine to pair with grilled Peri Peri Prawns- I think the spice of the dish will balance out the sharp acidity.  Lovely stuff- this is $16 per bottle and gets 89 points from me making it a 5 star effort to drink in the near term.  Salut….

$18, 5 stars, 90points, austria, grüner veltliner, Weinviertel

A beautiful shade of medium lemon with some petillance evident and a watery sheen (12.5% ABV).  The nose has medium intensity aromas of pear, melon, white peach and a streak of minerality.  The palate is dry with high acidity and a tingle from the fizz.  The flavors correspond to the nose but I also get touch of bitterness and some herbal notes including white pepper.  The slight spritz in this wine makes it very refreshing along with the cutting acidity.  The finish is quite a tart affair with a touch of lime showing up along with the pear and pepper notes.  The finish is medium in length.  I’m pairing it with Cajun Shrimp and Andouille sausage- I think the bracing structure will offset some of the heat and will work well with the tomato base.  This is a very decent summer wine that gets 90 points from me and at $18- 5 stars.  Drink till 2025.  Salut….

$16, 4 stars, 88 points, austria, grüner veltliner, niederosterreich

Pale lemon/lime colored with medium viscosity legs (13.5% ABV).  Medium intensity aromas of white pepper, lanolin, lime, pear, red apple and wet stone.  The palate is dry with high acidity and a medium body.  Flavors of silky lanolin with spicy white pepper and Bartlett pear mix with slightly underripe red apple and zingy citrus.  The finish is medium in length and a touch tart from the high acidity.  It’s refreshing, yet the full body is counterintuitive.  This comes in a 1 litre bottle for $16 and gets 88 points from me.  I’m pairing this 4 star wine with Thai Beef Kaprow and a vegetarian Green Curry.  Drink now.  Salut….

$15, 3 stars, 87 points, austria, grüner veltliner, niederosterreich

Pale lemon colored with a watery sheen and some evidence of effervescence (12.5% ABV).  The nose has aromas of lemon and lime with white pepper, crunchy green apple, lanolin and wet slate.  The palate is dry with high acidity that hits on the jaw rather than the tongue.  This slightly effervescent wine has a spritz to the light body where I get flavors of citrus, white pepper, wet wool and green apple.  The finish is medium in length and leans towards slightly unripe green apple, lemon and pungent pepper.  I am tasting this wine only slightly chilled, I think it will perform better with some time in the ice bucket.  I’m going to try and pair it with pulled pork that has been slow smoked all day with a spicy dry rub.  87 points from me for this $15 effort makes it a 3 star wine to drink in the short term.  Salut….

Medium cherry-red colored with a watery sheen in the glass (13% ABV).  The nose has medium (-) intensity aromas of red licorice, maraschino cherry, red raspberry, rhubarb and Dr Pepper.  The palate has a touch of residual sugar (RS) with medium acidity and lithe tannins.  Red fruit and red licorice for flavors that are very enticing and refreshing.  I like the simplicity of this wine- no oak, no big tannins, not acidic.  The finish is quite long.  It’s very easy to drink and will pair nicely with our roasted veggie bowls with Kielbasa and Andouille off the grill.  I like this $18 offering and will buy more for the summer.  It reminds me of Gamay with it’s juiciness and light body.  88 points and 4 stars from me- drink till 2025.  Salut….

$25, 5 stars, 90 points, austria, grüner veltliner, kremstal

Medium lemon with a touch of petillance and medium legs (13% ABV).  The nose has medium intensity aromas of lemon rind, pomelo, white flowers, crushed gravel and pith.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity, a touch of bitterness and medium body.  The flavors I get are citrus dominated per the nose but I also get a rounded, creamy textured note of lemon curd.  The finish is medium to long and the crispness of the acidity lingers but is not biting.  I like this $25 effort and give it 90 points and 5 stars.  Drink till 2025.  Salut….

$15, 4 stars, 89 points, austria, carnuntum, zweigelt

We went out to a fancy new restaurant (Lark) where the suggestion was to order several appetizers, some pasta dishes and finish with a main course.  We shared everything so there was a cornucopia of flavors ranging from grilled Octopus, salad, Gnocco with Ricotta and Parma, Raviolis and my Duck breast.  Such a varied range of food requires an open mind to wine choices.  Zweigelt, being a fairly light bodied wine with fresh red fruit and low tannins was the perfect match.  This Austrian varietal was developed as a crossing between Bläufrankish and St. Laurent.  This particular bottle was smooth with medium (-) tannins, medium acidity and light to medium body. Red fruit driven with tons of cherry, some red currant and a spice box note. As I drank this wine I also noted earth and leather notes. With a medium length finish this easy-drinking wine was delicious and complemented the meal to the T.  At retail it’s a $15 wine that gets 89 points from me.  I would probably not sit on it for long as it has a great freshness and lacks sufficient structure to cellar.  4 stars- pair with lighter dishes and white meats.  Salut….

$50, 5 stars, 98 points, austria, dessert wine, grüner veltliner, Ice wine, niederosterreich

Grüner Veltliner Eiswein is a new one for me.  This one is deep gold in the glass with a watery sheen highlighting the relatively low 8% ABV.  The nose is exquisite- pronounced aromas of stewed apricots, grilled honey, mango, geranium, almond slivers, white peach, mandarin orange peel and bananas foster.  Stunning.  The palate is lusciously sweet.  Low acidity, full bodied, unctuous and simply delicious.  The primary flavor I get is stewed stone fruit, with honey in abundance.  Floral notes, nutty nuance and a hint of mango and orange citrus makes for a yummy experience.  This is spectacular.  98 points was awarded by one pro.  I have to agree.  This $50 sticky is amazing and gets 5 stars.  I feel it will drink well till 2035.  #blownaway.  Salut….

$16, 4 stars, 89 points, austria, grüner veltliner, niederosterreich

Yesterday was Moxie’s birthday.  Two of our sons snuck in for the celebration- one from Montreal, the other from D.C.  In planning for #3 to return to Canada he needed a COVID test, so I booked one at 5:30 and then a table for the six of us shortly thereafter.  One glimpse at the menu told me I needed a crisp white to go with the grilled Trout mains I was about to order.  This one did not disappoint, albeit the first impression was a bit shocking.

It pours a medium lemon color with barely a shimmer in the glass due to the low 12% ABV.  The nose has interesting aromas of lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, ginger and orange blossom.  The palate is where I nearly regretted my choice- the wine is a touch sweet, as in off-dry.  I was hoping for a crisp, dry white.  Alas, I was not disappointed.  The citrus flavors were ever present, as was a spritz of lemon that I found interesting.  The (candied) ginger is probably what I sensed as a sweet component, though with such low alcohol, there could well be residual sugar present.  I found the wine to be quite refreshing thanks to the spritz and medium body.  The flavors are present but not cloying, the acidity is medium (+) and not cutting.  The finish might be short, but it is mouth puckering and makes me long for another taste.  This is a great white wine varietal to explore with fish, chicken, shellfish and vegetarian dishes laced with savory spices.  I like this $16 bottle that gets 89 points and 4 stars from me.  Drink soon.  Salut….
