$22, 5 stars, 92 points, cabernet sauvignon, Sonoma, Sonoma Cabernet

I was recently in an airport lounge and saw this wine being offered.  I am a fan of the winery since our visit there in 2015.  If you are ever in the area and want to enjoy a nice tasting, fun staff and cool dog I suggest you visit Alexander Valley Vineyards.

Nice rich purple in the glass with a nose of eucalyptus and plum jam -maybe blackberry reduction. The initial taste is super smooth. I mean seriously smooth, with blackberry, nutmeg and tobacco flavors. This wine has a seamless transition from front to back. Amazing and extremely balanced. I’m loving it. 92 points, which is high but this wine is drinking on pointe and deserves credit for its immediate satisfaction. It may cellar for another 3-5 years but why wait?  I found it online for $15, but MSRP is around $22.  They blended a touch of my favorites in for color, aroma and balance.  Merlot at 6%, with a touch of Cab Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. For sure a 5 star wine, stock up and serve alone or with pretty much all the classic red wine pairings.  Salut….

$30, 2 stars, 88 points, cabernet merlot blend, Sonoma

With no varietals mentioned on the label I took a chance on this $30 offering that was on BOGO at the local.  Brooding nose of black fruits and chocolate dust. Mouth of ripe plums, cinnamon, ganache and green pepper (kinda strange I know). Rich acidity and mellow tannins. 88 points from me and 2-3 stars.  Not sure yet, perhaps it needs some time.  This wine hails from Sonoma and I suspect it is loaded with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  Salut….

$28, 4 stars, 91 points, Cabernet franc, Sonoma

If you read much of my blogging you will know that I love this varietal.  It exudes a softer sexier side to the Cabernet grape while showing off floral notes.  This winery is where my son and I took a tour when we were in the Valley this past Spring.  The wine is a crimson purple and has a stunning nose of blackberry and chocolate with some violet hints.  Super smooth introduction of black and blue berries with a smidgen of oak and a tasty coating of lithe tannins. The mid palate is dark and brooding whilst the finish is decently long and caressing with tannic dryness and a touch of acidity. This is a super delicious wine which technically gets 91 points from me, bravo. 2015-2022.  $28 make it a 4 star effort in my books.  Salut….

$38, 5 stars, 92 points, Cabernet franc, Sonoma

From the northern part of Sonoma comes this gem.  My buddy brought it to the tasting and paid $38 for it.  I was excited to try it as you know how I love the Franc.

We were outside by the fire pit so I could not really make out the color or clarity.  The nose was gorgeous though.  Violets and plum notes with a touch of oak on the first whiff.  Fresh and bracing initial attack with flowers, cinnamon, plum torte and vanilla creme.  Rich acidity and smooth tannins make for a long cellaring potential. This is a well made and deelish wine that gets 92 points from me.  Well hidden 14.4% alcohol and a long finish make this a 5 star wine.  Salut….

$25, 3 stars, 89 points, cabernet sauvignon, Sonoma, Sonoma Cabernet

One of my friends brought this bottle to the party so I have no idea the price or where to get it.  My first impressions were good with a nice color to the glass and blueberries on the nose with some vanilla.  Spice box and cedar with blue fruits and plums came across on the palate which was coated in mellow tannins and sweet oak.  Decent acidity brought the whole package together for me until the back end heat showed up.  I missed the actual percentage, but it was not well integrated, which cost it a point or two.  We ate appetizers of shrimp and crab cakes, hardly the best pairing but we enjoyed the whole ambiance of the moment.  I would prefer a leg of lamb, perhaps even a grilled pork chop to go with this particular bottle.  89 points and potentially a three star wine if it goes for the $25 price I imagine it to be.  Salut….

$44, 4 stars, 90 points, cabernet sauvignon, Sonoma, Sonoma Cabernet

Napa Cabernet is to me big, bold and beautiful.  Sonoma is more refined, less in your face and more about finesse.  Both are delicious, both have a time and a place.  I often think that Napa is synonymous with Cab and Sonoma is relegated to Pinot.  I wonder what gives me those thoughts…..

This wine was good, smooth and silky.  It showed up as a lighter shade of purple in the glass and had a nice bouquet of dark fruits and jam.  On the palate I noted rich plums and berry compote.  Good acidity and fine-grained tannins were also noted and the wine had a good length to it.  It packed an unnoticeable 14.4% alcohol and did not show any heat whatsoever, a deft hand in the cellar.  Later on I got dried figs and blue berry on the finish which was really delicious.  We served this up at a birthday dinner with some grilled meats and Chorizo sausage.  It was a perfect match and I would highly recommend it.  90 points from me and 4 stars for this $44 effort.  It could use some short term cellaring, but is drinking nicely and will do so for another 5 years minimum.  Salut….

$55, 4 stars, 91 points, Cabernet, Sonoma

One of my favorite things in life is to drink aged Cabs that have taken on secondary flavors and evolved out of adolescence.

This is a relatively young Sonoma Mountain wine to have accomplished that task and it really shines for me.  It shows off a bright purple hue in the glass and presents itself with black plum and blackberry on the nose.  The initial attack comprises blackberry and tobacco with oak and cassis.  The mid palate came across with smooth tannins and an earthy component.  This wine is super smooth and fruity with a delightful balance of secondary flavors and a delectable dryness.  I am totally digging this one and glad to have a few in the cellar.  Pricey at $55, i believe it offers some serious value and give it a 91 point rating with 4 stars.  We had it with roasted Tenderloin and Yorkshire pudding with horseradish and mushroom gravy.  A perfect match.  Salut….

$25, 4 stars, 89 points, Sonoma, Sonoma Pinot noir

Note:  My buddy ordered this wine for us to split a case.  I did not really know what I was getting, but it retailed at $25 per (we paid about half that).

Totally New World in profile, it screamed Sonoma.  Cherries, more cherries and some red rhubarb.  Very defining acidity and a noticeable tannic structure make this a serious wine.  It is rather heavy for a Pinot Noir and strays from the traditional flavors with some additional notes of red currants and perhaps some oaky smoke.  Riding a hefty 14.8 %, I think extraction was foremost on the winemaker’s mind.  It works out though and I am digging this wine.  Question is, what would I drink it with?  Salmon with lemon butter, that’s what.  I think it has a certain flavor that would complement the fish and the acidity/tannins would cut nicely into the fatty component.  Steak is not ideal for this hefty wine, it lacks tannic punch.  I figure it is worthy of 89 points, and for the price- 4 stars.  Cellaring for another 5 years would be fine, but it is providing pleasure right now.  Salut….

5 stars, 89 points, pinot noir, Sonoma

Known as Four Bears, this is bang-for-the-buck Pinot that I am digging.

Given to me as a gift, I researched the price- $13 on average. Can you say “I’ll take a case…..”

Strawberry on the nose, lots of it. A clean attack of raspberry meets strawberry on a really nice palate with very subdued tannins and excellent balance of acidity. Massive 14.5% alcohol is not noticeable (until later), with a great feeling in the mouth. My cheeks are puckering, and also anticipating the next mouthfull. This is really enjoyable, either by itself or with a medium dish (I had Jerk Chicken). Loving the value of this well crafted Pinot at 5 stars… Seriously. Perhaps an 89 pointer because it shows good primal characteristics, yet I doubt there is an afterlife. Everyone needs some of this- gitsum………
