$40, 4 stars, 90 points, Champagne, Sparkling wine

I was invited to a friend’s house in the Bay area last night and swiftly put my diet on hold.  Our aperitif was the stunning non vintage brut style Champagne from Piper Heidsieck.   It opened up in the flute with apple and brioche notes that translated onto the palate seamlessly.  A fine mousse and refreshing acidity mingled in with some lemon and biscuit.  The mousse was perfect for me, I don’t like large bubbles and the sweetness (or lack thereof) was ideal.  Smooth and balanced with a decent finish.  We drank this wine with appetizers of cheese, olives and dips.  It paired well with all the flavors and was an excellent choice.  Very adaptable, this is a brand I will cellar for intimate parties or special occasions.  I found it online for $40 and would give it 90 points and 4 stars.  Good Champagne is never cheap, this one happens to be a great value.  Salut….

$15, 4 stars, 90 points, re-taste, sauternes, sweet white wine

I hardly chirped up about the 2010 Bordenave when I first tried it.  Last night, I had a hankering for something sweet and this one just happened to be lying around.  Considering it is about $15 per bottle, I did not fear pulling the cork and being underwhelmed.  I was in for a surprise.  Seems like I have had a string of crappy wine lately and it is nice to re-visit a bad one and get some satisfaction out of it.

More unctuous in the mouth, it was somewhat sweeter with more depth of fruit.  Pineapple was evident but the botrytis gave off a lovely honeyed apricot.  Juicy acidity balanced the wine and kept the sweetness in check.  I enjoyed half the bottle while watching a movie and found myself licking my lips several times.  Sauternes is never cheap, this bottle is very ‘reasonable’ and I am glad I still have a few hiding out downstairs.  4 stars and 90 points from me this time.  Amazing what a little cellar time will do for a young wine.  Salut….

$46, 3 stars, 90 points, burgundy, pinot noir

If you have read my rather lengthy post about the Paleo Diet, this is the wine that I mentioned.  It was overcome by the Collard Greens I prepared as they are very pungent.  I left it alone for a while and had a revisit once dinner was over.

2007 was not a stellar Burgundian vintage so I was taking a chance on this wine.  I have had this negociant’s wines before and have been very pleased so I took the punt and dove into it.  Burgundy is never cheap, so at about $46 this is a stretch for most.  I just happened across it at a better price.

Textbook in color, smell and flavor profile.  Cherry, earth and strawberry are the initial flavors.  Very smooth texture, but a hint of tannin sneaks in.  You may recall that I have a hard time discerning this component in Pinot Noir.  At six years of age, it is still primal in fruit makeup and has not taken on any secondary flavors.  I doubt that it will.  Never mind, it is a tasty wine that is giving me lots of enjoyment, its finesse is amazing and the cherry component exquisite.  I can take a guess that it could last another 10 years in the cellar but will it improve?  Drinking nicely now I reckon it is a 90 pointer.  I give it 3 stars for the QPR (Quality Price Ratio) but don’t let that stop you.  This company produces consistent wines and if you want a foray into Burgundy, they will provide solid footing- at a price.  Salut….

Wine with spicy food

$25, $26, 4 stars, 90 points, riesling, zinfandel

Probably the trickiest decision in wine pairing.  Hot, spicy foods detract the essence of wine, stripping the fruit, tannins and nose from underneath you whether it’s an Indian Curry, Jamaican Jerk dish, fiery Thai or Mexican….  That is where I set my challenge.

For dinner tonight, I prepared pulled Chicken and Shrimp Tacos with spicy Prawn Peri Peri.  I looked in my toolkit and came up with two options.  I tried both- a German Spätlese Riesling and a Californian Zinfandel from Sonoma.  Why the Zin you ask, simple.  It’s the only varietal I can think of that has an abundance of fruit, low tannins and potentially some high levels of alcohol.  I opened the white when I was cooking and found it to be very sweet, almost sickly.  The red got the nod after we sat at the table and I had a mouthful of the spice.  After dinner, I normalized my tastebuds and gave them both another try.  I will start with the white.

Markus Molitor Ürziger Würzgarte Spätlese Riesling 2009

From Mosel and  weighing in at 8% alcohol, it was super sweet.  Spätlese is technically an off-dry wine with medium body, so I was taken aback by the cloying amount of sugar.  I laid it aside until dinner and went about my chores.
After a mouth full of spicy chicken I tried the wine again, absolutely perfect.  The combination was magic.  The sweetness was offset by the heat, the great acidity of the wine cut through and the peach notes came across nicely.  After dinner I started to get more depth, the sweetness subsiding.  Fresh grass notes as well as some minerality became apparent.  The mouthfeel is exquisite, balanced and long.  This is a good wine. Not being well versed in Rieslings, I hesitate to opine, but I would think it is easily a 90 point wine and for $26 you are getting a very enjoyable ‘spice wine’ that I am giving 4 stars to.  Ps. Moxie loves this style of wine and helped with the tasting.

Bella Vetta Rockpile Zinfandel ‘Jack’s Cabin Vineyard’ 2008

From Sonoma with a 14.5% punch behind it.  With the tastebuds coated in spice, this wine struggled to show itself.  Along with dulling your mouth, chili’s tend to throw off your smell as well.  I got nothing out of the glass on the nose and the initial taste was muted with notes of blackberry and pepper.  The wine’s alcohol was perfectly suited and was not an issue.  The acidity was great, cutting the heat down slightly.  There were no tannins to discern and the finish was somewhat muted.  Overall, a distant second place in the challenge, falling short of expectations.
Post-dinner was a different story.  Blackberry, red raspberry and cloves were all over the place.  Zins can be very jammy but this one was linear, focused and well balanced.  Very little tannins to resolve and a good acidity made this easy to drink.  The alcohol started to show unfortunately, but at this level it is hard to hide.  I found it for $25 and figure it’s a 90 pointer.  At this combination, 4 stars and worthy of cellaring a few bottles.   Like I said, it is easy to drink so it will appeal to newbs and the seasoned pros will realize its quality.  Salut….

3 stars, 90 points, crianza

A Tempranillo from the Toro region of Spain that got very high marks from the pro’s. My take- very beautiful purple hues in the glass. The nose offered up plums and jam. On the palate, very rich and tannic. Initially sweet, this component subsided after 30 minutes. Blueberries, plums and coffee were the primary flavors. A biting tannic component made my gums dry out. Heavy lashings of oak are evident, but not overbearing. In Spain, the Crianza level of wine requires 6 months minimum in oak and 2 years of aging before release. I think the 6 months was plenty, any more would be over-kill. This is a serious wine, but just not my favorite. For $40, there are others I prefer. Like I said, the pro’s raved about it with anywhere from 91-94 points. I think it’s a 90 pointer and only 3 stars. Salut….

5 stars, 90 points, merlot

Served on a Virgin America flight. I was pleasantly surprised, after it had a chance to breath that is. Initially, overly tannic and sharp. Once I gave it 30 minutes, very smooth and tasty- with plums and chocolate mixing it up with a eucalyptus tinge . The initial surge of dryness let up and mellowed to a delightful framework of mouth coating tannins and balanced acidity. I got nothing on the nose because it was served in a plastic cup, on a pressurized airplane. The finish, lingering. I had to upgrade my initial thoughts- this is a 90 point wine and 4 stars…. delicious. If you like Metlot , go for it! Salut….

Lang & Reed Cabernet Franc 2010

3 stars, 90 points, Cabernet franc

A tannic Cabernet Franc from Napa Valley that brims with dark cherries and anise. Dark purple in the glass hints to the seriousness of the wine. I can sense some complexity evolving, but it is overwhelmed by the youthful tannic grip that has closed this one down. I think it needs at least 3-4 years to be approachable and will drink for another 10. Potential for 90 points and 3 stars for this $43 offering. It does offer an extended finish though… Salut

5 stars, 90 points, Argentina, Malbec

I’m a big fan of this winery and have had this wine from the 2008 and 2009 vintages.  I sang the praises of the 2009 yet missed out on the 2010 for some reason.  Anyway, this latest wine is a little young in my opinion.  Delicious and inviting with its dark fruit and brooding tannins.  Inky purple in the glass, it exudes power and depth.  The acidity is quite pressing, and the tannins are a little green, but given time this wine is going to be delicious.  I imagine it will start to rock in 2015 and continue to roll until 2020 at the very least.  Potentially a 90 point wine, at $22 it rates 5 stars with me.  I am going to cellar a few of these and watch the evolution.

4 stars, 90 points, Napa

Moxie and I traveled to Bali for a wedding, via Napa Valley.  We ended up getting delayed on our arrival and missed out on winery visits, but the hotel had a beautiful terrace where we ordered this bottle to enjoy as an aperitif.  Very young, and served from 375 ml, this was definitely a treat.  Not too oaky or buttery, it was slightly more austere.  Great apple meets lemon on the nose traversed to the palate where it was smoothly mixed with some butterscotch on the back end.  Reminiscent of Burgundy, I sensed very aligned acidity, yet not razor sharp.  There is a time and a place for that kind of component.  This wine was very balanced and smooth.  I enjoyed my glass immensely and would highly recommend it for a pre-dinner drink, but it would pair amazingly with some poached salmon and boiled new potatoes.  I’m guessing this wine has at least 10 years in it and would be interesting to watch it’s development.  At $36 per bottle on average, you are getting what you pay for here.  Quality Napa Chardonnay at a fair price.  4 stars, 90 points….

4 stars, 90 points, Santa Cruz wine

From the Santa Cruz mountains comes this little gem.  You know I like the varietal and I am also a big fan of this AVA, where the cooler climate refines the wines into ‘my style’ but not stripping the Cabernet Franc of its character.  Layered with black berry and plum flavors, it offers up good tannins and balanced acidity.  At 5 years of age, it is drinking on point and still has another 5 to run.  We drank it with an Italian meal of spicy shrimp and red sauce, allowing the boldness of the wine to offset the acidity of the tomato based sauce.  It worked a charm and I highly recommend it!  I think this is a good wine worthy of 90 points and at $25 it gets 4 stars.
