A charming, easy to drink red that won’t break the bank.  Unpretentious, the Red Label series is made for casual drinking and I enjoyed this blend.  Shiraz and Grenache were meant for each other.  Bright red fruit on the nose easily translated to raspberries and strawberries on the palate.  Very little tannic complexity and no biting acidity made this an easy pop-n-pour before dinner wine.  You could serve this wine at large parties or with burgers and dogs.  I bought two red label wines for a bargain price of $14, but alone, it was $10.  86 points and 3 stars for this South Eastern Australian blend.  Salut….

$19, 3 stars, 88 points, aussie shiraz

Atypical of Aussie Shiraz, this wine was way more subdued than the Cabernet we tried side-by-side form the same winery.  A beautiful purple color in the glass, the nose offered blackberry and pepper.  Spicy is good, jammy is bad.  Made in a more restrained way, this wine was offering dark fruits and a hint of oak along with some asian plums on the palate.  Very well integrated tannins and good balance made this easy to drink and I would pair it with steaks, burgers and ravioli.  Not a serious wine but certainly a good quaffer.  I enjoyed the 2008 Shiraz and had similar reviews.  It seems to be a consistent wine year in and out.  88 points on a technical merit and 3 stars for this $19 effort that is widely available.  Salut….

d’Arenberg Shiraz ‘The Dead Arm’ 2008

4 stars, 92 points, aussie shiraz

If you are in a wine store, unsure of what to buy for a spur-of-the-moment host bottle then d’Arenberg is your go-to wine.  The winery makes a bunch of different wines but most have the red/yellow stripe on the label which makes them easy to identify.  Quality and consistency come to mind with this brand.

Dark purple in the glass, it comes off the blocks with blueberry, plum and a hint of oak.  On the initial palate, I was getting licorice and eucalyptus in addition to the fruitiness.  Great acidity kept the wine on track and the tannic structure is built to last.  On the back end, vanilla comes to mind as does blackberry pie.  Drinking well now, it will cellar for another 10-15 years easily.  We drank this with Tenderloins and salad, I cannot think of a better combination.  Pricey at $35+, it scores well at 92 in my books and has to be a 4 star effort.  Treat yourself to some really good Shiraz this summer and try a d’Arenberg.  Salut……

2 stars, 84 points, aussie shiraz

Next up on the flight to Bali was this Aussie Shiraz.  I will admit that between this flight and the return one I sampled this wine from 3 different bottles, all pretty much consistent.  Very muted nose that was giving me no signs of fruit, perhaps the dry environment of an aircraft cabin did it no justice.  On the palate, raw blackberry jam mixed with earth, but slightly dry.   I did notice some gripping tannins and the mouthfeel was ok, but nothing stunning.  Overall, a very atypical Shiraz that did not do much for me.  84 points and 2 stars.

Clarendon Hills Syrah Piggott Range Vineyard 2006

4 stars, 93 points, aussie shiraz, syrah

An iconic name from Australia that crafts some monumental wines.  Normally this varietal is called Shiraz downunder, yet Clarendon makes it in an Old World style and reverted to the Syrah moniker.  Unlike typical Aussie Shiraz, this offering is refined, understated and showing great class.  Plum compote, chocolate and some earth transcend from the nose to the palate.  Layers of fruit emerge in this complex wine and the tannins are ever so subtle, yet omni-present.  Extremely balanced and smooth, this is finesse at its finest.  Pricey at about $100, this is no Thursday night pop-n-pour.  I served it up on a Sunday evening with London Broil and roasted potatoes.  It would pair well with Lamb chops as well as by itself.  I believe that the pro’s ranged from 92-98.  I would give it 93 personally and 4 stars (Price taken into account).  I have three more in the cellar and will watch for further development, anticipating a drinking window from now until 2020 at the least.

3 stars, 85 points, Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon, aussie shiraz

I guess yesterday was the Aussie Cabernet tasting day for me.  This was the third wine in the lineup and I was suffering from ‘palate fatigue’ if you know what I mean!  Very basic and reasonably priced everyday wine from this mass-producer.  Nothing special, yet nothing untoward.  Balanced, somewhat fresh and definitely fruity.  I imagine this wine was made for pop-n-pour as it has very little long-term structure.  It will please at parties and is also an everyday dinner wine.  I won’t break the bank, but offers decent plum, blueberry and oak. The Shiraz is not overly jammy, the Cabernet adding some spice. 3 stars and 85 points from me.

A blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon that hit well with the pro’s yet I despised.  I guess I just don’t like overly worked Shiraz, Aussie style.  Structurally speaking, it had all the right components for an easy drinking reasonable wine.  Tannins, acidity and balance.  Overly oaky in my opinion- it was dark purple in the glass.  On the nose- very ripe black berry notes that revealed plummy jam and berry on the palate.  Like I said, not my style of over-extraction.  For me 2 stars and 84 points.  The pro’s gave it about 87 points.

3 stars, 89 points, aussie shiraz

There’s Aussie Shiraz, and then there is Shiraz from Australia. A big difference in style, quality and enjoyment. This wine runs along the Shiraz from Australia line and it is good.
Nose-wise …. Red fruit compote. On the palate, rich and warm raspberry meets cocoa. A slight touch of plum and graphite make this a complex wine that has me excited. The tannins are well integrated and there is no imbalance. A normal finish leaves me feeling this is a 3 star wine at 89 points.

Atypical of regular Aussie Shiraz, this Diamond Label offering brings good value for money. A purple wine that gives off hints of blue berries. On the palate, plum and blueberry jam mix with very subtle tannins to give a nice mouthfull of fresh fruit. Decent at 87 points and 3 stars.

Elderton Shiraz Barossa “Friends Series” 2010

4 stars, 91 points, aussie shiraz, Barossa Shiraz

Finally. I have been in a Shiraz/Syrah slump recently, not being able to find anything worth a damn. This wine came through for me. If you have read my previous posts on Aussie Shiraz, you will remember that I am not a huge fan of the monster jammy style, preferring a more subdued approach to managing the awesome potential of this grape. Elderton has done it with this wine, and for a decent price. Red fruitiness and good balance lead into a nice tannic mouthfeel that caresses with more plummy fruit and good acidity. The wine is somewhat young but drinking nicely already with another 5 years to maturity. My kind of wine for a meaty dinner, perhaps a beef stew. Good balance and a crowd pleaser. 4 stars, 91 points for around $22.
