$18, 3 stars, 87 points, merlot, new zealand

I don’t believe I have tasted a New Zealand Merlot, so this was a new one for me.  It was slightly pale in the glass and had an almost Pinot looking hue to it.  On the nose, some cherry and cranberry notes were detected.  On the the palate it was very modern in style with Kirsch and cranberry flavors.  Not overly dry, it had some decent acidity and was rather refreshing.  I am not sure of the typicity to region, but it was an interesting twist on Merlot.  I shall have to taste more of the varietal from there to get a baseline.  This bottle was on special for $9 but usually costs $18.  A crowd pleaser because it was easy to drink and different.  87 points from me and 3 stars.  Salut….

$12, 4 stars, 87 points, Argentina wines, Malbec

Cheap and cheerful for $12.  This is a must-have wine for everyday drinking.  It offers juicy Malbec flavors of plums, blackberry, vanilla and it does it all in an easy to drink style.  Slight tannins and juicy acidity give this a great party wine mouthfeel.  It handles pasta, burgers, steaks and just plain old pre-dinner drinking really well.  This winery is consistent and the wine can be found everywhere.  I am a fan and think it’s a  respectable 87 point wine worthy of 4 stars.  Salut….

$12, 3 stars, 87 points, Barossa Shiraz

I couldn’t help myself.  The extra packaging sold me on this wine, I just had to try it.  I did not care for the 2008 Reserve Shiraz that much and figured I would give this vintage a chance to shine.

A beautiful nose of blueberry and vanilla with some ripe plums got me very excited.  The initial attack was very tasty indeed, showing off the plums and berries with some pretty forceful tannins.  I was bothered by the balance of the wine though and wondered why.  I am no expert but there was a certain component that was out of line and it took about 3 hours for it to sort itself out.  The wine then became much nicer to drink and I could enjoy the dryness of the tannins and the medium acidity.  The fruit remained prevalent, never swaying.  This Barossa Shiraz cost me about $12 and should be widely available. I think it could use another 2 years in a cellar to help with the balance and should evolve into a nice weekday dinner wine.  3 stars and 87 points from me.  Salut….

$55, 2 stars, 87 points, burgundy, pinot noir

That’s a helluva label to tell you that this is a Burgundian Pinot Noir.  Supposedly from a 1st cru vineyard (Burgundy still boggles me), denoting a high quality and from the amazing 2009 vintage.  That is why I bought this bottle which retails at about $55 today.  I don’t think I got a good deal.

This wine was atypical of the Burgundian profile.  I got strawberry and cut grass on the nose.  The wine is very pale in color which is expected of the varietal.  On the palate, more strawberries but unripe.  Sour cherries and cut grass mingle with graphite and some earthiness.  I am not digging this profile.  Very tannic and with tremendous acidity, this is probably a lurker.  I hope so.  It has the potential to be great lived.  Not ready for drinking until at least 2016, and hoping that it will get out of the sour stage it is sitting in.  87 points and 2 stars for now.  I will need to re-visit this one at  much later date.  Salut….

Wolf Blass President’s Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

$19, 3 stars, 87 points, Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon

I have had the 2008 President’s Selection before and thoroughly enjoyed it.  This version was slightly over the top for me.  Very dark purple in the glass, I could almost smell the color.  Over-extraction and judicious oak left me somewhat disappointed.  Blueberry jam and plum compote with good acidity and some bracing tannins.  Perhaps it may need some more time in the cellar methinks.  Anyway, at about $19 I think it is an 87 pointer and only 3 stars.  I can’t pinpoint a pairing that would work well, but this bottle could easily be drunk all by itself if you like this style.  Salut….

$22, 3 stars, 87 points, gsm, languedoc

It’s Fall and there’s a chill in the air.  What better than a nice hearty Beef Stew?  Precisely what I thought.  Searching for a pairing, I needed something rugged, fruity, slightly tannic and perhaps earthy.   Enter the wines from the Languedoc.  Southern France produces some exceptional values that are downright delicious and don’t have the airs or the prices of their northern cousins.  The main varietal in this blend is Syrah, with near equal parts Grenache and Mourvedre balancing it all up.  It came in at 14% alcohol, which did not factor.

Dark purple in the glass, it had aromas of earth and black fruits.  On the palate; cherry, blackberry and cassis.  The earthy component was still evident but also some flowers, perhaps lavender came rising up.  There is a fine set of tannins lurking here, sitting quietly on the sidelines.  I wonder what this wine will be like in two years?  I reckon it may be worth cellaring a few to try it out.

I picked right.  Comfort food needs a hearty companion.  This wine fit the bill right on the money and didn’t break the bank at about $22.  87 points and 3 stars.  Explore the Languedoc if you have never tried them, fascinating combinations and great wines.  Salut….

Chilcas Syrah 2011

5 stars, 87 points, chile, syrah

Back on track with the Chilcas family!  I just wrote about the Carmenere disappointment and am happy to say that the Syrah bottling is right up my alley.

There are two ways to spell this varietal, Shiraz- which I find to be a much bolder expression of the fruit, and Syrah- a more refined offering and usually Old World in heritage.  This bottling is old school through and through.  Very soft in the mouth, with gentle tannins and balanced acidity.  Reserved, it shows its red berry and chocolate flavors very smoothly.  This wine, while not complex, does show off its origin and terroir very nicely (not that I’m an expert).  Did I mention the price?  A veritable steal and worthy of 5 stars and perhaps 87 points.  I think I’m on to something here, stay away from the funky Carmenere, stock up on this and the Cabernet and you can defend against any size party that pops up!  Salut….

4 stars, 87 points, shiraz

Plums, plums and more plums.  On the nose, this wine was very aromatic and inviting.  On the palate, good weight and as mentioned, a plum component that was juicy and vibrant.  Good tannic structure and acidity made this a fun wine to enjoy while not being overly complex.  For about $12, this wine bangs the drums.  You can’t go wrong here folks, you are getting good fruit-forward, ready-to-drink pleasure for a bargain.  I would stock up on this for a party, serving it with any form of grilled meats, pasta dishes and even roast duck.  4 stars for the price/quality and 87 points IMHO.

Fleurie Cuvee Prestige Les Chambards 2011

3 stars, 87 points, beaujolais, fleurie, gamay

Our trip to Bali took us via Hong Kong, and the final leg was a lunchtime flight in Business class for just over 4 hours.  I sampled all they had and started with this little gem.  If you have ever had Gamay grapes, they were probably in some cheap and nasty Beaujolais Nouveau.  Fleurie is an appellation within the Beaujoulais region which straddles the Rhone and Burgundy regions in France.  The grape itself is thin skinned and low in tannins.  Fleurie is considered a step up from traditional wines of the region and has some aging capacity.

This particular cuvee was textbook Gamay; light, pungent and floral on the nose with some strawberry and rose on the palate. Very delicate in the mouth, it is a very smooth and easy wine to drink.  No marked tannins and a good acidic structure made this well suited to the lighter fare I chose.  I would not pair it with red meat, but rather salmon, roast chicken or a cobb salad would do the trick.  I’m not sure how widely available this wine is nor do I know the price.  Technically speaking i would guess at 87 points and think it would be a 3 star wine if priced under $15.  Worthy of a try if you come across it.  Of note, this style of wine is one of my preferred summertime lunch wines when chilled slightly.

Rivetto Barbaresco Ce Vanin 2009

3 stars, 87 points, Barbaresco

Barbaresco is to Italian wine what Beaujolais is to French wine: the thinner, easier red-headed step child that is always there, no matter what. Made from Nebbiolo just like Barolo, it hardly stands up to its big brother.
Once you get to grips with these facts, it’s time to enjoy the wine for what it is.
In this particular bottle, a very light red complexion gives a little strawberry on the nose. Caressing the palate with very smooth tannins comes a dose of currants meets red fruits and earth. There is a certain minerality here that is easy to pick up on due to the delicate nature of this wine. It is balanced, easy to drink and paired very well with baked Haddock and Risotto. Fish??? Yup, I paired red wine with fish, and it worked. Haddock is a very flaky white fish, low in oils and not reeking of fish. This wine is very light, almost Rose’ like, giving freshness and bouquet that marries well with the fish.
87 points and 3 stars. I’m thinking a Chicken Caesar Salad will bang with this wine…..try it and see.
