Two points to note.  I love Cabernet Franc, and I am a fan of Cosentino wines having visited their tasting room in Napa back in June with Moxie.  I saw this wine on the list at a nearby Cajun-Korean Fusion restaurant.  With no hesitation, the wine was ordered and poured into some rather nice BAG’s (Big Assed Glasses).  This wine is from Lodi fruit and was slightly atypical.  I almost sensed a Zinfandel component.  The red fruits and berry flavors gave way to some plum jam and earth with a peppery spice finishing it off.  The wine itself had good acidity and the tannins were smooth.  The flavors of the package were very delightful. I was expecting the softer more perfumed style of Franc but was happy to have experienced a different terroir and style for this varietal.  It is listed at $22 on the winery’s website and I reckon it delivers the goods.  90 points and 4 stars from me.  Salut….

I am hitting it on all cylinders this week, home run after touchdown.  Moxie has been absolutely crushing the new recipes and I have rediscovered some forgotten wines.

Tonight she banged up some Brazilian Shrimp Stew.  Spicy, tasty and surprisingly filling.  The basic ingredients are shrimp, spinach, garlic, coconut milk, red peppers and Ro-Tel (a fine combination of tomatoes and chiles), all topped with fresh cilantro.  It reminds me of Tom Yung Goong, that fiery Thai soup but more focused on the shrimp and coconut.  I needed a fruity wine yet again and was at a loss.  A search of the cellar brought the ’09 Flora Springs, which I hated a year ago.  I figured that it could meet the drain if it didn’t work out for the pairing since I had no predispositions about it.

The wine has really come alive.  A lighter shade of purple in the glass, it offered blueberry fruit on the grill.  The initial taste was impressive with blueberry, toasty oak and some anise.  The wine has a certain sweetness, but not cloying or bothersome.  The heat of the dish needed that fruit aspect combined with a sweetness that Cabernet Franc occasionally possesses along with a certain perfume element.  The structure is fine with some tight grained tannins lurking and a balanced acidity, once again trademark characteristics of the varietal.  I think this wine has finally hit it’s stride and will last another 3 years.  It runs $30 and 89 points but really a 3 star effort considering the price.  I am glad I gave it the year I promised.  Evolution is a wonderful thing as long as it is timed just right!  Salut….

I was not sure of the blend when I decided to pair this Napa red with some serious Ribeye steaks.  I thought I was getting a tannic Cab Sav, which is what I wanted.  Instead, I ended up with a multi dimensional blend, mainly Cabernet Franc with Merlot balancing it out.  Absolutely delicious is what it was.  You may recall that I have a soft spot for the Franc, but this is a seriously complex wine that offered up Plums and Blueberry on the nose.  The first wave was Pomegranate, red berries and a touch of oak.  Later, I was getting dark berry and currants with some back end tannins that were sublime.  The structure of this wine is fantastic, balanced and built for medium term cellaring.  The tannins are all concentrated on the finish, making this an easy drinker.  The long ending is a dry mouth-puckering event that lasted for ever.  I think I would pair this again with any grilled meat, perhaps even roast chicken.  The fruit is so evident and layered that the wine is Chameleon-like and can adapt to many dishes.  I bet this wine would rock a Moroccan Tagine dish of Lamb and stewed fruits with couscous.  Priced at $50, it is rather a ‘treat’ wine, but I would be guessing a 92 point rating is appropriate.  I am giving it 4 stars because it is so interesting, complex and offers gratification from today until 2020 at the very least.  Salut….

A tannic Cabernet Franc from Napa Valley that brims with dark cherries and anise. Dark purple in the glass hints to the seriousness of the wine. I can sense some complexity evolving, but it is overwhelmed by the youthful tannic grip that has closed this one down. I think it needs at least 3-4 years to be approachable and will drink for another 10. Potential for 90 points and 3 stars for this $43 offering. It does offer an extended finish though… Salut
