$19, 3 stars, 88 points, grenache, mclaren vale, mourvedre, shiraz

A classic Rhone blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre from Mclaren Vale made by this consistent producer.  I have already written about several of D’Arenberg’s wines and am working my way through their offerings as quickly as I see them.

The Mourvedre is a mere 5% of the blend with the Syrah and Grenache providing the backbone, the dark purple color and the linear tannins.  Black fruit is evident on the nose and it pushes through onto the palate with some leather and anise.  I got some dusty earth on the back end as well which was unexpected.  The wine was bold and full bodied but lacked a certain complexity for me.  At 4 years of age it is drinking well and will last another 4 at least.  I cannot see much evolution but it will provide enjoyment when paired with charcuterie and perhaps a Beef stew.  I paid $19 for this wine and am going with 88 points.  WS and some other pro’s went as high as 91.  3 stars from me.  Salut….

$24, 3 stars, 88 points, Cotes du rhone, grenache, syrah

Having just drunk the more delicate Pinot Noir, this was a smack to the face.  A huge, tannic, rustic wine that was nearly black in the glass.  Full bodied and not afraid to show it, this wine had notes of blackberry, licorice and oak on the nose.  On the palate, very earthy, almost too much even for me.  The garrigue infused funk overpowered the black fruits.  The tannins were great and will hold this wine for at least 5 years but it is drinking great right now.  My personal opinion is 88 points for this wine.  The balance of fruit and secondary flavors weighed the scoring down for me.  For $24 it may be worthy of a try but be prepared for it.  I suggest pairing this Syrah/Grenache blend with a beef stew or lasagna- something hearty.  I’m going with 3 stars for now.  Salut….

$15, 4 stars, 89 points, carignan, cotes du roussillon, grenache

Half and half Grenache and Carignan, a great blend from the Roussillon region.  I was seeking a basic country wine to go with my roast chicken and Peri Peri sauce (spicy as a mo-fo) with Arugula (Rocket) salad, more spice.  I needed a raw, acidic, somewhat tannic, fruit forward wine for my meal.  I was not far off.  Usually, spice kills the red wines as I discovered.  This particular dinner was more about spice than heat.  The Peri Peri sauce comes from Nando’s, a South African restaurant that uses the sauce to warm things up a bit.

The wine itself was purchased for about $15.  A great deal considering the big man gave it a 90+ rating.  I’m going with 89.   It offers up raw Blueberry, green peppers and lithe tannins with a bracing acidity.  The blue component was the right anti-spice and the acidic component was right up my alley for the meal.  It’s difficult to pair red wines with anything spicy, the rougher the better I reckon.  What I mean is that finesse has no place here.  The fruit needs to be forward and really in your grill.  Secondary nuances are overwhelmed.  Stick to the basic, young country wines that have the brawn.  This is a wine that is flexible, capable of tackling heat, grilled meats and even roast chicken.  I would imagine it would kill a Lasagne.  4 stars in my system.  Salut….

$10, 3 stars, 86 points, aussie shiraz, grenache, shiraz

A charming, easy to drink red that won’t break the bank.  Unpretentious, the Red Label series is made for casual drinking and I enjoyed this blend.  Shiraz and Grenache were meant for each other.  Bright red fruit on the nose easily translated to raspberries and strawberries on the palate.  Very little tannic complexity and no biting acidity made this an easy pop-n-pour before dinner wine.  You could serve this wine at large parties or with burgers and dogs.  I bought two red label wines for a bargain price of $14, but alone, it was $10.  86 points and 3 stars for this South Eastern Australian blend.  Salut….

$10, 4 stars, 86 points, grenache

A hefty Grenache from Spain that will hide it’s 15% alcohol very well until – boom.  Dark purple in the glass, it exuded blackberry and vanilla on the nose.  My initial impression was the smoothness of the fruit, coupled with the drying tannins.  It is likely this wine has peaked, but in doing so it has offered berry and a mint component plus some red fruits, perhaps strawberry on the palate.  Good balance, but somewhat short on the fruit finish.  My friend brought this over so I had to do a search- perhaps $10 per bottle.  86 points, but in its day this would have been a 4 star wine.  Drink up if you have any.  Salut….

4 stars, 89 points, Cotes du rhone, grenache, syrah

From the initial sniff I knew I was going to love this wine. Primal red fruit and a floral component teased my senses. On the first sip, red berries and some blackberry hints mixed it up nicely with some pretty decent tannins. Very puckering, this wine begs to be drunk. Good balance, just a bit basic in complexity. I had a glance at the back label and noticed that this wine is predominantly Grenache (love it), hence the florality and smoothness. The Syrah is giving it some edge. I like this wine, especially for its price. 4 stars, and I reckon 89 points.

5 stars, 90 points, catalayud, grenache

An extremely ripe infant that blew my nostrils out and then attacked my grill with full on blueberry and spice. I can’t even imagine where this wine is going in the next 5 years. Good structure with acidity and tannins out the wazoo. 90 plus points and potentially a 5 star wine if it all comes together.

2 stars, grenache, Priorat

The first bottle was old and flawed. #2 bottle was better, albeit funky. Wet dog aroma thankfully gives way to vegetation and spicy red currants. Still tannic, it befuddles me because this wine is past it’s prime. Slightly out of balance, it’s not my fav. 2 stars.

3 stars, 87 points, grenache

A nice introductory nose of black berries that transcends onto the palate rather nicely. Not complex, acidic or tannic, this wine is a very easy drinker that will be sure to please. On the palate I notice some interesting wood, perhaps spiced by oak? Solid 3 points and I would fathom an 87 point score.

5 stars, 92 points, grenache, mourvedre, napa blend

The great blend of the Rhone- Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre. Very gorgeous plummy nose gives way to red fruits exploding in a certain freshness that leaves a great mouthfeel. A child at 5, the tannins are well stocked and ready for the next 10 years of drinking. A very well made wine IMHO. I would love to revisit in 5 years- betting some barny type secondary stuff comes out, the kinds that excite me. 5 star effort, 92 points if I were rating it.
