$13, 4 stars, 89 points, cahors, corked, Malbec

Cahors is a region in central France that produces ‘the Black Grape’.  The Malbec’s from this region are extremely dark, tannic and usually delicious.  They differ from Argie Malbecs because the South American version is far more fruit driven and the Old World style is for deeper extraction and more tannic substance, plus the terroir is totally different.

This bottle was flawed.  It just tasted bad.  It had good intentions, with an almost black appearance in the glass and some enticing aromas of Asian pear and black cherry.  On the palate, there was an off flavor that destroyed any hope of it being enjoyable.  I am not dismissing this wine just yet, I think it was corked.  It’s a shame really as the components all seemed to be in place.  The dryness of the hefty tannins was exactly what I was looking for and the acidity was there to balance it.  I may look for another bottle to re-taste.  This wine got an 89 from WE and it was only $13 which would have made it a 4 star wine.  Salut….

$10, 4 stars, 88 points, Argentina wines, Malbec

As the name implies, there’s lots of oak in this basic Malbec.  We drank it with charcoal grilled beef sweetbreads and it was a perfect match.  The charred edges of the food paired well with the oaky blueberry fruit and the tannins, although slight, agreed with the lightness of the dish.  The color of the wine was as expected and the nose was heavily oaked.  I’m all for the use of the wood as long as it is done deftly.  I knew what to expect with this one and was pleased.  Simple in structure, it was easy to drink and all the guests enjoyed it.  Reasonable at about $10, I would give this wine 88 points and 4 stars.  It was the juicy Malbec I was searching for the other night.  Salut….

$20, 3 stars, 88 points, Argentina wines, Malbec

The second bottle ordered at our Argentinian dinner was this Malbec.  You can’t have Argie steaks without Malbec, they go hand in hand.  This one was the traditional inky purple as expected and gave off red fruits and fig compote on the nose.  The palate was different, more blackcurrants and cranberry with some mintiness mixed in.  I enjoyed this wine but have had better Malbecs and would look for more tannins and better acidity.  The big man himself gave it 90, I’m going with 88.  $20 at retail makes this a 3 star effort for me.  Salut….

$12, 4 stars, 87 points, Argentina wines, Malbec

Cheap and cheerful for $12.  This is a must-have wine for everyday drinking.  It offers juicy Malbec flavors of plums, blackberry, vanilla and it does it all in an easy to drink style.  Slight tannins and juicy acidity give this a great party wine mouthfeel.  It handles pasta, burgers, steaks and just plain old pre-dinner drinking really well.  This winery is consistent and the wine can be found everywhere.  I am a fan and think it’s a  respectable 87 point wine worthy of 4 stars.  Salut….

$39, 4 stars, 91 points, Argentina, Malbec

I love Malbec, Argentinian or French. They have their nuances but both regions offer up really juicy , meaty wines that offer power and finesse at the same time. This one is particularly good at both characteristics.
Dark purple in the glass with strong blackberries and vanillin on the nose. Very smooth on the initial attack of dark fruits and integrated oak. Flavors of chocolate and some cassis come through on the back end. The tannins sneak up and leave a refreshing dryness on the gums. We’ll integrated and balanced. This is a tasty wine for $39 a bottle. I just had a glass at the airport before traveling to Cali. 91 points and 4 stars. This wine is superb on its own but I bet it would kill a Filet Mignon. Treat yourself! Salut….

$15, 3 stars, 88 points, Argentina wines, Malbec

Last night Moxie banged up some amazing veggie stuffed flank steaks.  I needed a juicy, big , fruity wine to match her culinary skills.  I opened this Malbec from Argentina’s Mendoza region and give her a half cup for the marinade/sauce.  I then went to the glass.  Beautiful purple with some great plums and blackberry on the nose.  A delicious palate of dark berry, purple plums and chocolate.  Medium tannins and good acidity make this a juicy drink for $15.  However, as good as it was while we were cooking, it became muted as soon as I sat down for dinner.  The wine did not hold up to the meat at all.  I was really surprised.  After dinner, it came back to life without any food around.  I have never seen this happen.  A great drinking wine, but not worthy of pairing with food, strange.  Anyway, I would buy it again for the price and simply drink it before or after dinner, perhaps at a party- problem solved!  3 stars and 88 points for me.  Salut….

2 stars, 91 points, Malbec

I’m not sure why my buddy opened this $70+ wine at the end of the evening, it should have been opened at 6 pm and decanted for an hour.  It was inky purple in the glass, with dark, piercing fruit on the nose.  Relatively young, it had a good structured tannic frame that hovered around the blackberries and licorice.  Very smooth and balanced, it drank easily, yet offered some complexity.  Unfortunately, at this price point, I am expecting much more in the layers and secondary flavors.  Technically speaking, a 91 pointer, but only 2 stars in my opinion.

5 stars, 90 points, Argentina, Malbec

I’m a big fan of this winery and have had this wine from the 2008 and 2009 vintages.  I sang the praises of the 2009 yet missed out on the 2010 for some reason.  Anyway, this latest wine is a little young in my opinion.  Delicious and inviting with its dark fruit and brooding tannins.  Inky purple in the glass, it exudes power and depth.  The acidity is quite pressing, and the tannins are a little green, but given time this wine is going to be delicious.  I imagine it will start to rock in 2015 and continue to roll until 2020 at the very least.  Potentially a 90 point wine, at $22 it rates 5 stars with me.  I am going to cellar a few of these and watch the evolution.

5 stars, 89 points, bonarda, Malbec, syrah

Mostly Malbec with a dose of Bonarda and Syrah, this little gem fits between the Malbec Reserve and Golden Reserve of which I am very fond of.  Deftly made with subtle oak, there is a serious tannic compound to this wine which will hold it together in the cellar for years to come.  Dark purple in the glass with very interesting blueberry notes and some mintiness on the nose.  On the palate is where the blueberry driven Malbec mixes it up with the red fruits of the Bonarda and Syrah.  I’m not sure where the tannins are derived from, but they just wont quit.  I was licking my lips forever after each sip, the mouth puckering was amazing, in a good way.  The acidity was bright and balanced in this wine.  It finished with a plumminess that was somewhat jamlike, which I enjoyed.  89 points in my book and a 5 star wine for the price.  This winery keeps on delivering the goods, a must have for the cellar to be enjoyed for the next 7 years.  Salut!

3 stars, 85 points, Argentina, Malbec

Perhaps a little young, the tannins overcame the fruit on this one.  A green note along with blackberries on the palate was somewhat offset by an imbalance in the acidity.  I was not a huge fan of this bottle, and don’t see it evolving much even with its strong tannic frame.  85 points and for under a tenner, perhaps 3 stars.  It might do for a BBQ with ribs slathered in sauce, or perhaps a grea-zee burger.
