This wine is a gorgeous shade of orange/pink. On the nose I get strawberry and lemon zest, pink grapefruit and almonds. On the palate it is a touch sweet, apricots come to mind. The strawberry component reappears on the mid palate with notes of lanolin and lemon. The finish is refreshing, a touch acidic and decent in length. Light red fruit notes carry through to the end. This is a nice, if somewhat sweet, summer sundowner. I would serve it with charcuterie, hard cheeses and some fresh figs. Quite dark but still see through in the glass. The nose gives off black cherry, blackberries and bacon. On the palate there’s black fruits, a hint of almond, lithe tannins and a balanced acidic component. The mid palate is kinda blasé, it’s just a continuation of the initial palate. The finish gives me rooibos tea with some tannic bite and a cherry licorice note. A decent wine that I would pair with Salmon steaks, Shish Kebab or Alfredo. 88 points and $16 put it in 3 star territory. Salut….
Very bright purple in the glass. The nose is very lively, with blackberry and plum notes alongside vanilla. On the palate it is delicious- rich, with caramel, oak and black fruits galore. Very lithe tannins and a touch of acidity make for a very easy drinking red with nice mouthfeel. The mid palate turns a touch astringent, with lapsang souchong tea, blackberry and oak. The finish is mid length with more dark fruit and black tea. A nice drop that will do well with many dishes but is delicious all by itself. 90 Points and 5 starts for this $13 effort. I remember the first time drinking this wine. It was at a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in New Jersey, overlooking Manhattan with Moxie. We were there attending a Gift Show, buying product for her first retail gig. It was an exciting time for us, we learned a lot and succeeded in keeping the business running through the dark days of 2008-2011. We were the last retail Gift shop standing in our area after the dust settled. I remember the wine, the meal and the atmosphere of the night vividly as it would signal the beginning of our newly charted course.
The 2014 Monterey Pinot is very light in the glass, see through and pale red. On the nose it’s all New World. Strawberry, Framboise, a touch of oak. On the palate, it is silky smooth. More strawberry, earthy mushrooms, a nice dose of acidity and some Rooibos tea. The mid palate caresses with some ever so slight tannins and a reminder of the acidity. The red fruit theme is in force and the wine carries swiftly to the medium length finish. It all ends with some cherry notes and a touch of vanilla bean. A very nice wine that can be yours for $15 and gets 89 points from me and 4 stars. I’m splapping together some creamy dill Chicken to go with it. Drink now till 2020. Salut....
See through lighter shade of purple. Stunning nose of mulberry, warm berry compote and a hint of cedar wood. The palate shows off red berries, fine grained tannins and a mouthful of warm brioche notes. There’s an underlying level of acidity that continues the whole length of this delicious wine. It just smacks of warm California fruit, nicely integrated with oak, balanced tannins and a freshness I’m really enjoying. 90 points and for $15 I’m giving it 4 stars and getting some more! Salut….
My folks were in town and took us out to dinner at this great new seafood place. Mum loves the Chard and we were there for seafood so it made sense to order something white and refreshing. On the nose this wine presents apple, melon and a hint of citrus. Being unoaked I was expecting something really steely, perhaps overly flinty or minerally but this wine was well balanced and did not overstretch itself. Anjou pear, a touch of minerality and some citrus notes were what was on offer. Well balanced and not too acidic. The folks and Moxie don’t like them to cut too much. I enjoyed this wine immensely and my folks raved about it. I think it warrants 89 points and I have found it online for $21, which is shocking considering we only paid $35 at the restaurant. 3 stars and worthy of buying a few for some trout on the grill, perhaps some shrimp scampi.
