Second up in our epic wines last night was the Comtesse.  Unfortunately this bottle was sitting in my wine chiller and was slightly cold when first opened.  The wine lacked a tail end kick, no tannins or bite….  I waited for it to warm up to room temperature and bam!  There they were, tannins, acidity, a nice finish, all I could ask for.  The wine was super smooth, nuances of tobacco, cassis, leather, all the secondary notes that get me excited about aged Bordeaux.  The wine was sublime.  It hit every note, showed it’s power, but also its grace.  This is a seductive wine with very soft edges, yet it holds an immense amount of complexity and evolution.  I wrote about this wine three years ago, the 2001 Comtesse got 92 points from me back then and I promised to drink one every 6 months.  I got sidetracked, sorry it took so long to drink another- I won’t make the same mistake again!  This wine has gone up to 93 points in my opinion and is nearing its peak.  On sale for $125 it is not cheap, but it gets 5 stars from me for the sheer enjoyment it provides.  Salut….

Last night I had an old College friend over for dinner.  We ate Brisket, as can be seen in my previous post.  While it was still cooking we have heavy hors d’ouerves and I opened up a stunning set of wines.  The 2001 vintage from Bordeaux has been quietly sitting in my cellar and I really should get to drinking them, time flies and most wines fade.  So, we started out with the amazing 2001 Chateau Cantermerle, which has been drinking well for a decade now.  The first tasting note I wrote was in 2011, the wine has only gotten better and more defined.  The secondary flavors are in place, the fruit is still present and the tannins are fully melded.  A great 91 point wine that I really enjoyed.  I purposely did not write notes, I just wanted to enjoy the moment and relish the wines.  A quick check online shows this one available for $55, making it a 5 star effort even at 16 years of age!  Well done.  Salut….

I can’t remember the exact details of when or where I bought this 3 Liter Double Magnum but it has been many years. This is a really nice Bordeaux wine which hailed from the amazing 2000 vintage.  I have saved it for the right moment and hoped it had matured nicely and was not over the hill or premature.  My first concern was the crumbling cork.  I ended up with it inside the bottle and my shirt getting the first tastes before my Thanksgiving guests arrived.  I was pleasantly surprised and thankful for my patience.

Still beautifully purple with no signs of bricking.  The nose is sublime.  Leather, plums, tobacco.  The initial taste is very smooth, refined and balanced.  More creamy purple fruits and leather show up as the wine works its way along. The tannins show up on the mid palate in a very subdued way.  The finish has vanilla, plum torte and cassis berries.  The tannins really kick in after a while and are gripping on the finish.  91 points and drinking nicely till 2023 at the least.  I found it online for $30 but it got terrible ratings from the pros.  I disagree but maybe that is because mine was in a large format bottle.  I love aged Bordeaux and this one hit it on all cylinders for me.  5 stars if you are looking for a good deal on something that offers freshness with old world charm and some secondary flavors of maturity starting to emerge.  Salut….

I last tasted this wine in it’s infancy, with instructions to revisit later.  Eighteen months on and it’s starting to open up, evolve and change in fruit flavors.  When I initially reviewed the BriO I only gave it 88 points.  This time is different.

Deep, rich purple hues with a nose of black currants, violets and cinnamon. The initial attack consists of blackberry, tar, and plum pudding. The wine is still showing some primal tannins, but they integrate well with the acidity. The mid palate and finish offer up more plums and a hint of eucalyptus. A medium length ending that leaves a certain tannic edge that begs for some red meat- good thing I’m doing kebabs tonight. I think this wine is just opening up and will drink well for another 5 years. 90 points and 3 stars for this $40 bottle.  Salut….

A see-through purple hue in the glass with some damson and leather on the nose.  The initial taste is super smooth with plum, tobacco, a touch of oak and very well balanced tannins.  The acidity is present, but only just showing itself.  The mid palate is interesting, with the tannins and acidity swirling around, mixing it up with more dark fruits and what appears to be the beginnings of secondary flavors.  I also get a telltale hint of violets.  When Bordeaux wines mature, the better made ones will start to lose the fruit and gain tertiary flavors that most claret drinkers love.  I am hoping this wine will evolve more as I have another 10 bottles and am going to enjoy the journey.  The finish is what I would consider ‘normal’.  Not long, not persistent but still showing off some of the fruit and tannins.  2010 was an exceptional year for Bordeaux, this wine is making the most of it.  The fruit is still ever present and the structure is great, holding the wine together and giving it a cellaring potential of another 7-8 years. In that timeframe I imagine some interesting things may happen.  I am going with 91 points and 5 stars for this $22 effort that is 30% Merlot, 60% Cab Sav and 10% Cabernet Franc (Which is probably why I like it so much!)  Salut….
