$6, cabernet sauvignon, chile

Another of the lost ‘garage’ wines my buddy brought over.  The back label was missing so I have no vintage information.  The cork was pretty dry and fell in to the bottle when I tried to insert the corkscrew.  The color is medium garnet with copper highlights and medium viscosity (12% ABV).  The nose has medium intensity aromas of dusty earth, desiccated red cherry, slightly cooked capsicum, mint, dried blackberry and burnt sugar.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity and medium tannins that are still quite bristly.  A light body was to be expected.  Flavors of dried black cherry, dusty bramble, stewed blackberry, bitter chocolate and dried prunes.  The bitterness is a bit cloying and carries on to the medium length finish.  This is not a very pleasant wine to drink but after being subjected to such harsh storage I am stunned that a $6 bottle of unknown age has withstood the test of time.  I revisited after a few hours and actually enjoyed the second glass.  I’m impressed tbh.  I might pick up a recent vintage to check out.  BTW- I looked up the label and think this might be a 1998 or earlier bottle.  That’s 26 years old my friends.  Drink now?? Lol.  Salut….

$6, 1 star, 75 points, cabernet sauvignon, california, Lodi

A friend of mine brought this over as a Thanksgiving gag wine.  Turned out, he was right on the money….

Deep purple colored with medium viscosity (14% ABV). The nose has medium (-) intensity aromas of candied red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate. Dry with medium (+) acidity and low tannins this wine has a medium (-) body.  The label says to expect spicy ripe dark fruit- instead I’m getting some tart notes of underripe red fruit and perhaps some manipulation in the cellar.  This wine has no finish and is a major pass at 75 points.  I ended up using it in a braise with Oxtails, it did okay in that role.  $6 still makes it a 1 star effort.  Salut….

$6, 5 stars, 86 points, del venezie, Italy, pinot grigio

Pale platinum colored with copper highlights and low viscosity (11% ABV).  The nose has medium intensity aromas of pear, green apple and grapefruit zest.  The palate has medium (+) acidity and a light body.  Confirming the fruit flavors are the same but with slightly bruised pear and the apple is yellow in color.  Medium length finish that is crisp.  86 points from me for this $6, (yes – six dollars) bottle of refreshingly crisp and light wine makes it worthy of 5 stars.  Stock up for the  hot summer!  Drink now.  Salut….

$6, 3 stars, 85 points, cabernet sauvignon, california, grenache, syrah

Nearly opaque, this deep ruby colored wine has a tinge of blue coloring on the edges.  The nose has aromas of black cherry, pomegranate, red licorice candy and ripe raspberry.  A touch of oak is also present.  The palate is dry with medium tannins and medium acidity.  There is a sourness to the palate but I get red fruit, red licorice and charcoal.  The body is medium and the finish is short.  The tannins linger mind you and there is some juiciness on the back end that I am enjoying.  It’s a Trader Joes special that runs $6.  Great for a party, this 85 pointer will not break the bank and can be served with burgers, dogs or even pizza.  3 stars from me for this blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to drink by 2024.   Salut….

$29, $6, 3 stars, 89 points, california, merlot, Sonoma, VWTC

Pretty dark and broody in the glass.  The nose gives me leather, smoke and a touch of oak alongside dark plums.  The palate is a bit obscure, the fruit is battling with a volatility that’s throwing me off.  I do get Charcoal, blackberries, more plum and that smoky leathery component.  It’s a rather interesting combo that really takes off on the mid palate, where the wine finally comes together.  Medium grade tannins don’t punish the gums but give the wine a nice structure.  They caress over the decent length finish that has a long, dry presence to go with the black berry and charcoal notes I tasted.  Overall this wine was much better on night 2, after the Virtual tasting #6.  I’m going 89 points and for $29 it gets 3 stars.  Drink till 2024.  Salut….

$30, $6, 5 stars, 92 points, california, pinot noir, Russian river valley, Sonoma, VWTC

Typical for the varietal, it shows a semi opaque light purple color in the glass.  The nose is stunning- cherries, cinnamon, blackberry.  On the palate this wine is fruity, New World in style but somewhat restrained.  Red fruit galore, some pepper and a hint of upfront acidity.  The midpalate gives me cherry jam, some cedar and an intro to the very lithe tannins.  This is some lip smacking juice people, absolutely delicious with a very nice mouthfeel and great balance.  The finish is medium in length, juicy with some sour cherry and mid length.  For $30 this is a great Pinot from one of my favorite wine making regions, the Russian River Valley.  92 points from me and 5 stars, buy it by the case.  Drink till 2030.  Salut….

$15, $6, 3 stars, 88 points, austria, grüner veltliner, VWTC, Wachau

Pale shade of yellow, this Austrian native kicked off the Virtual Wine Tasting Company’s 6th event.  We drank it at room temp as well as chilled.  I did not think it performed well at the tasting and am now re-tasting the following night indoors.  The nose exhibits tons of citrus, some lanolin and green apple.  The palate has minerality and a nice acidic cut.  Lemon/lime like a 7-Up alongside an austere green streak that make this a very sharp wine.  It cuts in the right places and refreshes as it goes.  I did not care for it initially, but I now think it fits the billing for a decent, inexpensive Gruner.  The finish is very refreshing and would pair well with seafood, perhaps a spicy Arrabiata but it will shine poolside on a hot day.  88 points and 3 stars for this $15 white.  Salut….

$6, 3 stars, 85 points, portugal, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional

Of medium opacity, this blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) only clocks in at 12.5% alcohol.  I paid a mere $ 6 for it and am excited to try what is proudly claimed as a 90 point WE #5 best buy 2016.

The nose is rather muted, offering up slight hints of blueberry and root beer.  On the palate I am slightly surprised by what seems to be effervescence.  More blue fruits and some slightly sweet notes of cola show up mid palate.  The finish is rather short and the wine lacks much tannic backbone.  I have to say, it is an easy wine to drink that will appeal to the relative wine noob as it does not inflict dryness to the gums and will serve its purpose at a Saturday afternoon cookout.  A 90 point wine it is not.  Not even close.  I am going with 85 points and 3 stars for its relative price to quality ratio.  Burgers, pizza and even the odd Spaghetti Bolognese would work here.  Drink now, not for the cellar.  Salut….
