$33, 5 stars, 92 points, chardonnay, finger lakes, New York, pinot blanc, pinot noir, riesling

Pale salmon colored with a fine yet aggressive mousse and low viscosity (12% ABV).  The nose is heavenly, unique and inviting.  Medium (+) intensity aromas of papaya, lime, blood orange, rose hip and cranberry.  I get a faint whiff right at the end of yeasty brioche and green almond.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity and a light body.   The mousse is delicate and fine- invigorating. Flavors of papaya, lime zest,  tart blood orange, bitter cherry, brioche and pomegranate lead to a medium length finish.  This is an intriguing wine that releases waves of flavors and has a beautiful mouthfeel.  I like it- so much so that I will order more.  92 points from me- at $33 it’s a relative bargain compared to French Champagne of this level.  5 stars.

An aside- this wine is made in the Solera method out of the following:

30% Previous Cuvée
38% Pinot Noir
13% Pinot Blanc
11% Riesling
8% Chardonnay

Salut….

Pale lemon with a watery sheen (13.5% ABV).  The nose has medium (+) intensity aromas of marzipan, white blossom, persimmon, yuzu, brioche, lemon pith and orange zest.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and a medium body.  Fresh citrus mingled with airy florals, marzipan, a hint of brioche and some stone fruit.  It’s really crisp and refreshing and finishes medium in length.  I paid $22 and give it 92 points.  Tonight it gets paired with Shrimp Creole and gets 5 stars from me.  Drink till 2028.  Salut….

$38, 3 stars, 89 points, chardonnay, New Jersey, outer coastal plain

Pale lemon in color with medium viscosity legs (12.9% ABV). The nose has medium (+) intensity aromas of pineapple, Yuzu, lemon pith, lime zest, white blossom and baking spices.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and a medium body. I’m starting to get some signs of malolactic fermentation but it’s not overwhelming. Citrus and tropical fruit dominate but I’m wondering if there’s been a little bit of lees stirring.  I doubt there’s a great deal of new oak. I like it for its freshness and weight. 89 points and for $38 ex-cellar it gets 3 stars. Drink with grilled salmon or a Cobb salad. Till 2026.  Salut….

$20, 3 stars, 86 points, chardonnay, Russian river valley, sonoma county

Pale lemon colored with a watery sheen (14.2% ABV).  The nose has medium intensity aromas of lemon pith, lemon, melon, brioche, raw almond, honeysuckle and orange blossom.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and a full body.  My first impression:  this wine has seen all the treatments- MLF, Sur lie aging and loads of oak.  The citrus fruit is overpowered by the effects of such treatment- butter, brioche and vanilla are all foremost and then I get a hint of lemon, pineapple and melon.  If you like this style of Cali Chard then grab some- I paid $11 on sale at Costco.  You can find it closer to $20.  It gets 86 points from me and 3 stars.  I’m pairing with roasted Cornish hens and glazed carrots with hot honey and garlic.  Drink till 2027.  Salut….

Pale gold colored with a watery sheen showing medium viscosity (13.5% ABV).  The nose is clean with pinpoint aromas of lemon zest, white blossom, pineapple, nutmeg, honeysuckle and grapefruit.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and a waxy, full-bodied mouthfeel.  Citrus and tropical fruit with white blossom and honeysuckle- but there’s something else.  I don’t get the traditional over-the-top MLF notes, nor is the wine over-oaked but I get hints on both Malo and oak along with some lees stirring, but it’s deftly done.  A very subtle chardonnay from Carneros that gets 92 points from me.  At $20 a pop it gets 5 stars.  I’m pairing with grilled pork chops and Jollof rice.  Drink till 2028.  Salut….

Pale to medium lemon colored with high viscosity (14.2% ABV).  The nose has aromas of pineapple, pear, melon, vanilla, lemon curd, white blossom, cottage cheese (sounds weird, right?), cardamom, peach and brioche.  Very complex indeed.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity and a full body.  Layers of ripe pineapple, melon, pear and green apple interlaced with oak nuance that is very deft alongside pretty florals.  A medium length finish leaves a slight bit of pithy bitterness.  Delicious stuff that we are pairing with steamed lobster and baked potato.  92 points for this $50 beauty gets it 5 stars.  Drink till 2030.  Salut….

$18, 3 stars, 88 points, california, central coast, chardonnay

We are in Lake Placid for an ice skating competition so when I saw this branded wine I had to pick it up.  Made from Californian Central Coast Chardonnay -I was expecting what I tasted.  Medium lemon colored with medium viscosity (13% ABV). The nose shows some butter, a little cream, a touch of pear and green apple- obviously MLF derived. The palate is dry with medium acidity, a full body and that buttery diacetyl taste associated with malolactic fermentation. The pear and apple fruit is round and warm with some baking spices and carries through to a medium length finish. The label says that this line is exclusively available in New York.  At $18 this 88 point wine gets three stars. Drink till 2025.  Salut….

$65, 5 stars, 94 points, california, chardonnay, coombsville, Napa

Deep lemon colored with medium viscosity legs (13.5% ABV).  It looks brooding and ready to deliver a mouthful.  On the nose- intense aromas of pineapple, lemon pith, melon, soursop, fennel, almond skin and orange blossom.  It is very complex, unique and has piqued my interest.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity and a full body.  Layers of exotic tropical fruit intertwined with some fresh citrus coupled with green herbs and florals.  It’s somewhat tart on the mid palate after the introduction of ripe fruit- the acidity keeping this big boy fresh and lively.  I’m very curious as to the oak treatment, if any and the lack of any butter notes by way of Malolactic fermentation.  I could have sworn that visually this was going to be an oaky, buttery Napa chard- alas I was wrong.  It is light-footed with great structure and finesse.  The finish is long and refreshing, making me go back for another sip whilst the acidity is making my mouth water.  Beautiful stuff, 94 points from me and for $65 from the winery mailing list- it gets 5 stars.  Drink till 2030, we are pairing ours with fresh Vietnamese rolls.  Ps. Check out the coordinates on the cork, nice touch.  Salut….

$13, 4 stars, 87 points, california, chardonnay, Naked Wines

Medium to deep lemon colored this Chardonnay has medium intensity aromas of citrus, pineapple, yellow apple, geranium and cherry leaf.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and a medium (+) body.  Flavors of lemon, grapefruit, pomelo and pineapple prevail and luckily for me- no Diacetyl from MLF.  I was not in the mood for a big, buttery, over-oaked Chard.  This is going to go beautifully with our grilled Chermoula spiced Shrimp and Spanish rice.  87 points from me for this $13 wine makes it a 4 star effort. Drink now.  Salut….

$35, 4 stars, 91 points, chardonnay, finger lakes, New York

This Finger Lakes Chardonnay is a very pale shade of lemon in the glass.  The nose is an explosion of aromas- lemon, grapefruit, tangerine spritz, candle wax, honeysuckle and orange blossom.  It is very clean and precise.  The palate is dry with bracing acidity and tons of citrus and floral notes.  The focus is on lemon and tangerine but I also get a hint of green apple and quince.  The cutting acidity is very refreshing so is the lack of any Malolactic fermentation.  This Chardonnay is made in a much leaner style than some of the flabby, buttery ones from out West.  Medium to full bodied, it has great structure and balance that leads to a medium length finish.  I drank it at the winery and reviewed it very casually- giving it 91 points which is the same figure here.  $35 makes it a 4 star wine that I will be pairing Salmon with.  Drink over the next few years with seafood or white meat.  You can read my write-up at https://caspernick.com/2022/01/15/dr-konstantin-frank-winery-tasting/ Salut….
