$30, 4 stars, 90 points, arroyo seco, california, monterey, pinot noir

It’s a tradition in our house to go out for Asian food the night before Thanksgiving.  Lord knows we will be busy the next day and who wants to cook big for two days in a row?  So, it was a Thai restaurant for us last night and when I saw this $30 bottle on sale for $46 – I had to give it a try.  I realize this winery’s style is to deeply extract and wrench every last drop of goodness from their Pinot grapes so I was ready for the onslaught.  Medium ruby colored with high viscosity (14.8% ABV).  Medium intensity aromas of black cherry, ripe pomegranate, dust, earthy cinnamon and sassafras.   The palate has medium acidity and medium tannins but a full body. Like I said- this is a thick wine.  The concept of Pinot Noir being a light and seductive wine is not apparent in this full-throttle offering.  Layers of ripe red fruit interspersed with loads of oak influence by way of cinnamon and clove that leads to a medium finish. It’s a 90 point wine in my books which makes it a 4 star effort to drink till 2030.  Marketing-wise, the big dip into molten wax is a nice effect but it makes opening the cork a challenge (good for making sure it stays sealed though).  If you like ’em big, this is one for the cellar.  Ideally this wine would pair well with Filet or Venison but it went a treat with the crispy Duck dishes I enjoyed.  Salut….

$43, 4 stars, 92 points, australia, pinot noir, VWTC, Yarra valley

Next up at the 33rd virtual tasting was this lovely Pinot.  I drank this a few months ago at a birthday dinner and loved it, hence the re-taste for our group.  It’s a pale garnet color with medium viscosity (13.5% ABV).  Medium (+) intensity aromas of strawberry kick things off followed by barnyard funk, cranberry, strawberry, strawberry shortcake and ‘cardboard box filled with cherries’ from one of the tasters.  On the palate it is dry with medium (+) acidity and medium (-) tannins.  A Medium (-) body carries the delicious cherry, strawberry, baking spice and pomegranate flavors through to a medium length finish.  I enjoyed tasting this wine again, perhaps not as much as the first time but gave it 15 points on our sheet and a 92 rating.  For $43 it gets 4 stars from me.  Drink with lighter meat dishes till 2030.  Yummy stuff.  Salut….

$15, 4 stars, 88 points, Aconcagua valley, chile, pinot noir

Very pale ruby, medium viscosity (13% ABV). The nose has telltale Pinot aromas of cherry, strawberry, baking spices, pomegranate and straw.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and a trace of tannic grip.  Light to medium bodied it’s a delicate affair that gives me red fruit, baking spices and some earthiness.  I like this wine.  It has a shortish finish but for $ 15 it’s not a bad drop.  I ordered it for dinner to pair with braised lamb shanks – plus a chicken liver starter.  It should work.  88 points.  Drink this 4 point wine now.  Salut….

$42, 5 stars, 94 points, australia, pinot noir, Yarra valley

Yesterday was my cousin’s birthday so we sailed the Potomac river and ended up in Old Town Alexandria for dinner.  I picked this Pinot Noir as I felt it would pair well with the myriad of main dishes that were ordered- Hangar steak, Swordfish etc.  It was stunning.  I took some very basic notes…

Cherry, baking spices, a touch of forest fooor, red raspberry, med (+) acidity med (-) tannins, medium bodied- 13.5% ABV …..delicious, silky smooth, long finish.  94 points, till 2032. Excellent development potential.

Looking this gem up I see one review as high as 96 points and a $43 price point.  RUN, don’t walk if you like a delicious Pinot of this caliber.  Salut….

$26, 5 stars, 91 points, anderson valley, california, Naked Wines, pinot noir

Medium ruby colored with slow moving legs (14.1% ABV).  The nose is classic New World Pinot- ripe red cherry, baked strawberry, spice box, vanilla, black raspberry twizzlers and a delightful floral note when I sniff the top of the glass…honeysuckle perhaps?  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity and medium tannins, more so than I was expecting but they are fine grained.  A full body leads me to the ripe red fruit I got on the nose along with some oak spice.  The finish is quite lengthy and a touch tart, which keeps it fresh and interesting.  It’s a full throttle style that I am planning to pair with grilled Pork Tomahawk chops and a crisp salad.  91 points from me.  Drink this $26 bottle till 2028.  5 stars, Salut….

$85, 5 stars, 93 points, california, pinot noir, Russian river valley

A friend brought this bottle of Russian River Pinot Noir over for a party, I got to evaluate it on day 2- here goes.

Medium ruby with a watery sheen (14.5% ABV).  Intense aromas of sweet black cherry, strawberry pie, baking spices, vanilla bean, candied cherry (like red twizzlers).  On the palate- medium (+) acidity with fine grained, medium tannins and a relatively full body. Imagine ripe, bright red fruit with subtle oak nuance of baking spices and vanilla.  A stunningly delicious and well structured New World Pinot that gets 93 points- drink till 2028.  Salut….

$19, 5 stars, 90 points, california, Naked Wines, pinot noir, Russian river valley

Pale to medium ruby colored showing some extraction and high viscosity (14.5% ABV).   The nose has aromas of candied black cherry, ripe pomegranate, red plum paste, baking spices, red licorice and spring flower blossom.  The palate is dry with medium (-) tannins and medium (+) acidity.  The wine is medium to full bodied and carries through with the ripe, red fruit and oak nuance.  I get a touch of charred oak on the back end as the wine finishes with medium length.  I’ll be honest, it’s not my style of Pinot Noir- too heavy, too worked, too ripe- but it will appeal to many.  From a technical standpoint it gets 90 points from me.  At $19 a pop it gets 5 stars.  I’m pairing my bottle with Roast Duck and grilled Brussel Sprouts.  Drink till 2026. Salut….

$41, 5 stars, 92 points, burgundy, cote de Beaune, france, pinot noir, pommard

If you read my previous post on our Parisian dinner you will have read that we drank two Pinot Noirs from Burgundy.  This is the second bottle- notes taken were basic as it was dinner!

Deep ruby. Rich aromas of cherry pie, pomegranate , coffee, chocolate and raspberry.  Medium acidity, medium (-) tannins and a medium (-) body with flavors of red fruit and silky oak spice carrying through to a medium finish.  92 points from me for this $41 stunner makes it a 5 star wine to seek out.  Salut….

$40, 4 stars, 91 points, burgundy, cote de Beaune, france, pinot noir

We recently dined at an amazing Parisian restaurant where the entire menu, wine included was extremely reasonable yet of such a high caliber that I will include some pictures.  We drank two bottles of Burgundian Pinot Noir, the first being this Chorey Les Beaune.  I did not want to detract from dinner so very basic notes were taken.

Medium ruby, more extracted than I expected.  Aromas of strawberry, cherries jubilee, a touch of baking spices and some smoke.  Medium (-) tannins and a medium acidity lead to a medium body.  Delicious with flavors of dark cherry, strawberry coulis, baking spice and charred oak on a medium finish. 91 points and for $40 this is a 4 star effort.  Salut….

$90, 5 stars, 93 points, california, pinot noir, sonoma coast

Pale garnet colored, this 9 year-old Pinot is showing signs of age and has medium viscosity legs (14.2% ABV) and a bit of haze (Unfined and unfiltered).  Pretty lofty aromas of baked cherry, strawberry pie and an earthy, mineral note dominate the nose but I get beautiful cola meets vanilla and cocoa powder.  Stunning.  The palate is dry with silky tannins and medium (+) acidity. Delicious flavors of baked and stewed red fruit with earthy funk and seasoned oak caress my mouth.  Vanilla cola really lights it up on the mid palate.  The finish is very svelte with remnants of cooked fruit and some floral notes.  A spectacular wine that get 93 points from me and for an estimated $90, 5 stars.  Drink till 2026.  I’m searing some Strip Steaks and some risotto to pair.  Salut….
