$30, 5 stars, 93 points, bekaa valley, cabernet sauvignon, lebanon, merlot, syrah

Deep garnet colored with moderate staining on the walls and a high viscosity (14% ABV).  The nose has intense aromas of baking spices with ripe blackberry, cassis, black plum, vanilla, coffee, menthol and mulberry preserves.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and medium (+) tannins that are slightly chalky.  The wine is full bodied and I get medium (+) intensity flavors of ripe black berries, finely integrated oak nuance and tertiary development.  The vanilla, baking spices, coffee and menthol are the supporting characters to the blackberry, mulberry and cassis notes.  The finish is long and delicious.  One of my favorite wineries that continues to overdeliver wines that have excellent aging capacity and bring much pleasure.  I would go with 93 points for this $30 wine that gets 5 stars.  Drink this Cab Sav, Merlot and Syrah blend till 2035.  Salut….

$15, 5 stars, 92 points, australia, dessert wine, Naked Wines, Strathbogie ranges, viognier

Pale gold with high viscosity (10.3% ABV) due to the residual sugar.  The nose of this dessert wine has medium (+) intensity aromas of oaky vanilla, apricot, blossom, peach, and more oak.  The palate is sweet with high acidity and a full body.  There is a touch of astringency from the lengthy oak contact which is interesting.  A heavy cloak of oak hangs over the more subtle apricot, honey, peach and orange blossom flavors.  If you are a fan of Cali chards that are oak dominated then this sweet wine is right up your alley.  I’m infatuated with this bottle, it’s very interesting and will go well with our pear tart and a dollop of vanilla ice cream.  At $15 for a 500 ml bottle this 92 pointer gets 5 stars.  I would love to have more to track the evolution, which may well last till 2035.  Salut….

$17, 5 stars, 91 points, Cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, chile, maipo valley

Deep purple colored with slight staining and high viscosity (13.5% ABV).  The nose has  medium intensity aromas of candied black cherry, blackberry, coffee, violets, vanilla and eucalyptus- it’s quite perfumed.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and medium (+) tannins that are silky.  A full body on this wine brings flavors of toasty oak interlaced with blackberry, black cherry, violets, vanilla and coffee.  The finish is satiny and medium in length.  I picked this bottle to pair with Steak au Poivre- it’s the perfect choice.  I think this is a 91 point wine even thought the label clearly boasts a 93 point award.  For $17, it’s a 5 star bottle to drink till 2028.  Salut….

$14, 5 stars, 90 points, bulllas, mataro, monastrell, Mourvèdre, mourvedre, spain

Deep, dark ruby with high viscosity (14.5% ABV).  The nose of this Monastrell aka Mourvèdre, aka Mataro has medium (+) intensity aromas of game, violets, black cherry, pine needles, blackberry tart and black currants.  The palate is dry with high acidity and medium tannins.  A full body carries the ripe dark berries and gamy notes.  I get a touch of the floral violets but no pine needles.  It finishes medium (-) in length but has a nice closing.  It’s a pretty nice presentation of this grape varietal that is normally blended as in ‘GSM’.  I like it and think it’s worthy of 90 points.   For $14 it gets 5 stars.  I’m pairing it with roasted Duck and gratin potatoes.  Drink till 2027.  Salut….

$25, 5 stars, 93 points, cabernet sauvignon, california, petite sirah

Medium ruby colored with heavy staining and high viscosity (14.5% ABV).  The nose has medium intensity aromas of ripe blackberry, mint, eucalyptus, coconut, cocoa and cedar.  On the palate I get medium acidity and medium (+) tannins that are fine grained to go along with a full body.  The ripeness of the dark berries is coupled with oak influence, licorice, mint and eucalyptus along with some dusty mocha.  It’s a really rich and fulfilling mouth feel that makes me reach for the glass.  The finish is medium in length and shows off this wine’s great balance.  Delicious stuff that gets 93 points from me.  I’m smoking a leg of lamb to pair with this 85/15 Cab Sav/Petite Sirah blend.  Cellar-wise drink this $25 wine till 2030.  It gets 5 stars from me.  Salut….

$25, 5 stars, 91 points, cabernet sauvignon, california

Deep purple colored with high viscosity (13.8% ABV).  The nose of this Cab has medium (+) intensity aromas of black plum, pencil lead, black currant, licorice and coffee.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and medium (+) tannins that are very ripe and silky.  A full body meets me with flavors of blackberry, cassis, black plum, licorice and a hint of coconut.  The coffee shows up later.  The finish is super smooth and medium in length, delicious.  This is a 91 point wine that gets 5 stars for its $25 price point.  I’m pairing it with Eye of Round roast.  Drink till 2028.  Salut….

$18, 5 stars, 94 points, australia, dessert wine, muscat, rutherglenn

Pale amber with copper hints and high viscosity (18% ABV).  The nose is stunning.  Intense aromas of blood orange marmalade, honey, pretty florals, dried orange peel- it’s very linear but full on.  The palate is sweet, smooth and luscious with medium (+) acidity to counter the sugar.  Full bodied, this wine just lays on your tongue and lets it soak up the rich flavors of orange marmalade, spun honey, bitter almond and blossom.  The finish is long, super long.  An amazing and delicious wine to savor for dessert that will improve with age- they say a Rutherglen Muscat is indestructible.  94 points for this $18 per half bottle wine that gets 5 stars.  I might be back for more.  Salut….

$17, 5 stars, 92 points, andalucia, fortified, jerez, palomino, spain

Pale amber/gold colored with high viscosity (20% ABV).  The color is specatucualr btw, hard to describe.  The nose has medium (+) intensity aromas of warm nuts, yeasty dough, preserved lemon, dried plum, brine, Christmas cake and dried orange peel.  The palate is slightly off-dry but the acidity is high and the body is full.  Dried fruit, warm nuts, yeasty notes and a citrus twist are all present.  The high alcohol hits the back of my throat a touch but blows off rather quickly.  The finish is medium to long and concentrates on the desiccated fruit and salty yeast notes I got on the opening.  This aperitif begs for some olives, charcuterie and warmed almonds.  It’s delicious and gets 92 points from me.  At $17 for 375ml, it gets 5 stars.  Salut….

$25, 5 stars, 91 points, cabernet sauvignon, california, Napa

Deep purple colored with staining on the walls and a high viscosity (14.5% ABV).   The nose has medium (+) intensity aromas of candied cherry, ripe black raspberry, baking spices, vanilla, dill, açaí berry, blackberry and coconut shavings.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and medium tannins that are lush and silky.  Coupled with a full body, this wine has a luxurious mouthfeel.  The fruit turns to black but the oak influence is present with baking spice, vanilla, coconut and dill all present for me.  The candied cherry I got on the nose (which I hate) has departed, replaced with black luxardo-like cherries and blackberry compote.  It’s a delicious wine with a long finish, better on the palate than the nose for sure.  I like it and think it’s worthy of 91 points.  It sells for $25, but my local Costco had it for $10 off making it a screamingly good deal.  Napa Cabernet of this level for $15!  It could go nicely with Filet of beef or a batch of Moussaka.  5 stars.  Drink till 2028.  Salut….

$21, 5 stars, 92 points, Cabernet franc, chinon, france, loire valley, VWTC

Our second red wine of the 33rd tasting was this stunning Cabernet Franc.  Deep ruby colored with a medium viscosity (14.5% ABV) and slight staining of the walls.  Right off the bat I smelled green peppers followed by chocolate, funk, cranberry, cigar, tobacco, leather, charcoal and a perfumed scent.  On the palate it has medium (+) acidity coupled with medium (+) tannins and a full body.  Flavor-wise it gave us chocolate covered cherry, cranberry and some tertiary notes that we got on the nose.  It has developed rapidly, shedding fruit for age influenced aromas and flavors- which I love.  The finish was long, which added points to this already delicious wine.  It turned out to be the wine of the night for most of us.  19/20 on the score sheet and a technical rating of 93 made this $21 bottle a 5 star winner.  I might order more!  Drink till 2028.  Salut….
