$16, 3 stars, 89 points, aussie shiraz, australia, Barossa, Barossa Shiraz, shiraz

It was Moxie’s 50th birthday last week so we have been celebrating all month.  Her mother took us out for a really nice dinner last night.  The very first wine listed was the Schild Shiraz 2014.  It was priced right at $30, which is not even double retail, so I took the plunge and ordered it even though the mother-in-law was footing the bill.  I just had to try it.  You see, I have been chasing this elusive wine for a few years now.  Back in 2010 I read a stunning review of their ’08 Shiraz, it got 94 points from WS.  I was dying to try it.  I then read another, more damning article a year later that put me off-  they had ‘made more’  when they ran low.  I was stunned and saddened.  Yep, read it here.  http://www.winespectator.com/webfeature/show/id/44637

Anyway, I am over it now and the mere sighting of this wine was my nod to go for it.  If you look at their earlier vintages, there were a string of 92-94 point years, followed by a slight decline.  This wine unfortunately was not in that realm of quality.

Dark purple hues.  Nose of black berries, leather and earth.  On the palate I get more dark berries, some coffee, chocolate dust and a touch of oak.  The mid palate has more dark fruits and a sinewy set of tannins. The finish is quite long and dry with the tannins really kicking in.  There is an austerity I cannot put my finger on which detracts from an otherwise very pleasant wine.  I drank it with braised Lamb Shank.  89 points and 3 stars for this $16 (retail) effort.  In hindsight, I am glad I came across this wine and look forward to future vintages that perhaps will reinstate it to a level it is capable of.  Salut….

$20, 2 stars, 86 points, cabernet sauvignon, Italy, sangiovese, Tuscan

I just saw the 95 point sticker on the label, it must be good or this particular critic is dead to me…

Dark purple color, from the 50% Cabernet Sauvignon.  Lets see what the 50% Sangiovese brings.  Olives, plum jam and seaweed hit the nose.  On the palate I get a very intriguing flavor.  I can’t quite put my finger on it…Black plums, dark, dark stone fruits and perhaps black tea leaves.  I am getting a very one dimensional hit of tannins as well.  The mid palate is all black tea and tannins.  The finish is bitter, with faint notes of black plum and oversteeped tea.  I don’t get it.  This wine was hyped by a pro, written up by the seller as soft and supple, with gentle tannins.  Quite the opposite for me, and bottle variation doesn’t count here.  This wine is barely 86 points in my book and for $20 I think I will look elsewhere.  2 stars.  Salut….

$15, 3 stars, 89 points, Argentina, patagonia, pinot noir

When I see a wine on sale for $15 that got a 93 point rating then I am all in, especially a Pinot Noir. I bought this one without hesitation. My own notes are slightly different than the pros, could be bottle variation, age, or just my palate.

Very pale red and see through in the glass. Nose of pomegranate and cranberry. On the palate, much more body than I was expecting. Notes of strawberry coulis, violets and a touch of gaminess. The wine has some good acidity and freshness that I’m enjoying. The alcohol, at a reasonable 13.5% is somehow showing up on the finish. I plan on pairing this decent wine with some shrimp and grits… let’s see how that works. 89 points from me on this $15 offering make it a 3 star wine. Salut….

$12, 3 stars, 88 points, grenache, spain

I have been on a bit of a shopping spree lately, looking for deals and trying to expand my palate.  This Spanish Grenache was a reasonable $12, came with a 91 point rating and fit the bill for me to sample.  It was see through purple in the glass.  A nose of plums and black berries with some ocean spray and a very slight trace of oak.  On the palate- black berries, iodine, and some medium level tannins. The mid palate shows off some black cherry and coffee notes that continue through to the finish.  It doesn’t end there, the tannins really hit hard on the back end and leave me with a dry sensation on the gums.  I would think this wine will last a while.  Pair with some hearty pasta dishes or a big burger on brioche.  88 points from me and 3 stars.  Salut….

Dow’s Late Bottled Vintage Port 2011, Portugal

$21, 5 stars, 92 points, port, portugal

Rich, thick purple in the glass- youth with power.  Nose of plum extract, coupled with blackberry jam.  Powerful and unctuous for a red dessert wine.  On the palate, pure Port expression of dark fruits meeting iodine, old oak cask and blackberry jam.  A stunning display of power, elegance and drinkability all wrapped up in one tight package.  A hint of well hidden tannins leave the midpalate with a slightly dry sensation while the acidity offsets the very slight tannins.  The finish is shorter than hoped for but who cares?  It has a definitive bitterness that I find intriguing.  This is a really good wine worthy of 92 points.  I’m not going to lie, I just ordered a bunch for $21.  If you like Port, give this 5 star effort a go.  Salut….

$15, 4 stars, 90 points, merlot, monterey

See through lighter shade of purple.  Stunning nose of mulberry, warm berry compote and a hint of cedar wood.  The palate shows off red berries, fine grained tannins and a mouthful of warm brioche notes.  There’s an underlying level of acidity that continues the whole length of this delicious wine.  It just smacks of warm California fruit, nicely integrated with oak, balanced tannins and a freshness I’m really enjoying.  90 points and for $15 I’m giving it 4 stars and getting some more!  Salut….

$15, 4 stars, 89 points, grüner veltliner

I just spent some time in Asia on vacation.  The flights to and from offered an opportunity to try some interesting wines.  I made the most of it!  If you have never had a Gruner Veltliner, I highly recommend them.  I had this one with a seafood terrine and salad.  It was a great match.

Golden dark yellow in the glass.  Nose of pineapple and ripe papaya.  The initial taste is quite refreshing, a cutting acidity introduces some pineapple spritz, with hints of lemon zest and pomelo.  Nice mouthfeel! 89 points and for $15 a really solid wine that gets 4 stars from me.  Salut….

Maison Loron & Fils Fleurie Les Saprolites 2015, Beaujolais, France

$18, 3 stars, 89 points, beaujolais, fleurie, france, gamay

Disclaimer- I’m tasting this wine in the confines of an aircraft cabin, where tastes and smells are often distorted by the rarified air.  Nose of grape juice, cinnamon and a woody hint.  On the palate I’m getting plum and blueberries with a rather surprising dose of tannins that are gripping the gums in a delightful manner.  I say surprising because this style of wine from Beaujolais is made differently.  Usually macerated, it doesn’t get much contact with the skins hence the normal ‘freshness’ of the region that gives up the long term cellaring capabilities of the wine by reducing tannic structure.  In return, a generally lighter style of fruit forward wine is crafted for short to mid term cellaring.  This particular wine will run for 5-8 years more and pair beautifully with roast chicken, pizza or some carpaccio and olive starters.  89 points.  Really delicious and for about $18 per bottle it gets 3 stars from me.  Salut….

$11, 5 stars, 88 points, california, central coast, merlot

This was on special at my local wine store, regularly $11, on sale for $10.  I had to try it.  It is vinted and bottled by the Wente Family Estate, which is a rather big and well know operation.

A good shade of purple in the glass, with a nose of black berry and kirsch.  On the palate, black stone fruits and black berries.  Very nice and supple mouthfeel, not overly acidic with very subtle tannins.  A pop’n’pour wine that is sure to please- for the price, it is a really outstanding effort.  88 points and 5 stars for its price to quality ratio.  Drink by itself or pair with pretty much anything!  Salut….

Bollina Corte Medicea ‘Athos’ Rosso Toscana IGT 2013, Tuscany, Italy

$20, 4 stars, 90 points, Italy, merlot, Tuscan

Have you ever had Ribena?  That is exactly what this blockbuster looks like in the glass.  It is a 100% Merlot from Tuscany that got huge marks from some pros. I bought in on the hype and could afford the $20 entry fee.

The nose is rich with blackberry and stone.  The initial taste is really delicious, with more black berries and plum mixing it up with gorgeous tannins and acidity.  I also get smoky mineral notes.  These flavors transcend the mid plate and meet up with dried blueberry on the finish.  The tannins are lush in this wine and give off a nice mouthfeel all the way through the finish.

I must be missing something about the 97 points given by an Italian critic, for me this is a solid wine that should get 90.  For the price paid it is a really good Merlot that I will be serving with Sunday Roast- 4 stars.  Salut.
