finger lakes, New York, winery visit

Moxie and I had to drop my daughter off in New York and decided to push North West to the Finger Lakes for a quick two day tasting experience.  The last time we were here was in January 2021.  I gotta say, if you can brave the cold and snow, it’s the best time to visit if you are serous about wine.  No crowds, no reservations needed (well, almost none), cheap hotels and an abundance of food options makes it a good month.

We arrived on Sunday afternoon and checked into the Canopy by Hilton in Ithaca.  Located on the southeast part of the region, it was a good place to kick off from as we had already driven from DC to NYC and after 8 hours in the car I was ready for a drink.  The hotel itself is beautifully appointed with a big, open reception that leads to the lounge and dining area.  The Bills were playing that night so the pull down screen was in place to view the game, sans volume.  Our breakfast was hearty, Shakshouka for me and the first of three daily omelettes for the missus.  We headed out just after 9:30 on the 45 minute drive to our first experience- Wagner.  Here is our mapped itinerary.

I ended up tasting the whole gamut of wines once our host realized I was in the trade- it was fun and exciting.  He really made our visit a memorable event.

Next up was Boundary Breaks- a really cool and modern wine tasting that showcased the delicious variations on the varietals that thrive on the region.

Our next stop was the eclectic Six Eighty Cellars.  Just one look at the descriptors got me excited.  Non-traditional would be the key word here, just read some of the techniques they are using to vinify… Cocciopesto, Concrete Diamond, Carbonic (Mainly found in Beaujolais), Sandstone, Clayver, Terracotta and loads of Pet-Nat wines.

Next door is their sister winery- Buttonwood Grove.  Far more traditional in style, they had some interesting choices that were tasty.

Alas, we had run out of time…. I did not want to be that guy that shows up 30 minutes before closing time on a dreary January Monday.  We cut short our next destination and pivoted to the hotel in Geneva.  We stayed here the last visit and enjoyed the amenities and their delicious breakfast.  Dinner was at Kindred Fare, where we dined last time as well.  Both visits we thoroughly enjoyed our evenings.

Our first stop on Tuesday was five minutes from our hotel- Ravines.  They have a beautiful old barn that is used for tastings, well worth a visit.  The wines were delicious but the Sparkling Brut was unreal.

Due to the weather we stopped into Fox Run Vineyards and took our time enjoying their offerings.  The view onto the lake would have been spectacular had there not been fog and snow!

A few yards down the road – Red Tail Ridge winery where we were warmly greeted by the General Manager and given a delightful tasting.  Their wines were the best we tasted. Moxie is very picky but she loved them, especially the Perpétuelle Change sparkler.  Who doesn’t love a dinosaur label??

What ended up being our last winery was Anthony Road, where I was told I must try their skin ferment Riesling.  I opted for the blind tasting of five wines and had a blast.  It’s been a while since I did that so it was a nice change.  Scoring 3/5 correct got me a prize!  Moxie and I were quite famished at that point so we ordered a brick of absolutely stunning Camembert made locally, I finally drank some wine instead of spitting.  I think I had tasted over 80 wines at this point and needed a break.  It was fun closer to a great two days of ‘work’.

We headed to the beautiful and well appointed Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel where we checked in to our lakeside room.  For dinner, we sat fireside and enjoyed a reasonable Malbec- I was done with Cab Franc and Riesling for the time being.  The next morning, after a hearty breakfast we loaded the wares into Moxie’s trusty Mini and drove the 5 hours back home.

Unable to muster up the courage to open a bottle, I settled for Belgian beer to go along with our roast chicken dinner.  I was pooped.  The 750 ml’s of a 10% ABV amber lulled me to a well deserved state.

I will be summarizing each winery in the subsequent posts, check back to read more!  Salut….

Osborne Cream Sherry NV, Jerez, Spain

$15, 5 stars, 88 points, jerez, palomino, Pedro Ximenez, spain

Cream sherry is made by adding a sweet sherry like Pedro Ximenez to the base Oloroso sherry- itself an oxidatively aged wine made from Palomino grapes.  As such the wine has a much darker hue than a pale or medium sherry.  This one is a gorgeous pale amber with orange highlights and high viscosity (17% ABV).  The nose has intense aromas of caramel, burnt sugar, walnuts, Brazil nuts and figs.  The palate is off-dry to sweet with medium (+) acidity and a full body.   Layers of burnt sugar, caramel and nuts with some ripe fig nuances lead to a medium length finish.  It’s a nice drop to enjoy as an aperitif but it would certainly hold its own postprandial.  I paid $15 but it’s available for $11 online, which makes it a steal.  88 points from me- 5 stars.  Salut….

$22, 5 stars, 91 points, bekaa valley, cabernet sauvignon, lebanon, merlot, petit verdot

Deep ruby, bordering on inky garnet with slight staining and high viscosity (13.5% ABV).  The nose of this Cab Sav/Merlot and Petit Verdot blend has medium intensity aromas of vanilla, mint, black cherry, cassis, açaí, black raspberry, leather and espresso.  The palate is dry with medium acidity, medium (+) tannins and a medium body.  The palate starts off with açaí berry, followed by the cassis, black raspberry, vanilla and mint.  The tannins are very polished and chalky leading to a nice mouthfeel.  The finish is medium in length and tends towards the raspberry, leather and vanilla.  The structure of this wine is really approachable which is nice.  I find many Lebanese wines that are age worthy need a few extra years before the pieces integrate into a nice drinking wine.  This one is performing nicely and will continue to do so till 2032.  I would pair it with grilled kebabs, some roast Lamb or Filet Mignon with peppercorn sauce.  I paid $22 and would give this beaut 91 points making it a 5 star wine in my books.  Salut….

$13, 4 stars, 89 points, Andalusia, palomino, spain

Pale amber colored with high viscosity (17% ABV).  The nose of this sherry has medium intensity aromas of nuts, green almonds, a touch of yeast, seaspray and burnt sugar.  The palate is off-dry with high acidity and a full body.  Medium intensity flavors of warmed cashews, green almonds, caramel, yeast and caramel/burnt sugar carry throughout to a long finish that has a bit of lingering heat.  It’s a tasty drop for sure that could use chilling (I’m tasting at room temp btw).  In case you missed it- Medium Sherry is an Amontillado (partial Biological age then Oxidatively aged) base wine that is sweetened to between 5-115 g/l of sugar.  I like it and think it deserves 89 points.  For $13 it gets 4 stars.  Salut….

$13, 4 stars, 89 points, Argentina, Mendoza, Torrontes

Pale lemon colored with a watery sheen (12.5% ABV).  The nose of this aromatic wine is quite intense with aromas of wild flower, lemon zest, grapefruit, papaya, pink guava, rosewater and tangerine.  It’s quite a potpourri!  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity and a refreshingly light body.  The flavors are not quite as intense as the nose but I still get loads of wild flower, citrus and tropical fruit notes. The papaya is quite prominent and reminds me of growing up in Africa.  One would be mistaken in assuming this veritable fruit salad is going to be off-dry- it’s really dry and crisp.  The finish is short to medium in length with citrus pith dominating.  I am really enjoying this Torrontes as I did with the 2021 vintage .  This one gets 89 points from me and at $13 it’s a buy-by-the-box wine for the upcoming summer.  Pair with crisp salad, grilled chicken salad or tuna fish casserole.  4 stars.  Salut….

Kirkland Signature Cabernet Sauvignon NV, California

$4, 1 star, 75 points, cabernet sauvignon, california

I bought this 3 Liter box wine to use for a red wine gravy base- it was $16.   I have hopes/faith it will perform decently.

Bright purple and opaque but when I poured the first glass, it foamed up considerably.

After 5 minutes it subsided into a regular looking glass of wine with deep hues and medium viscosity (13% ABV).  The nose of this ‘California’ Cabernet Sauvignon has medium intensity aromas of candied cherry (not my fave), red twizzlers, cherry cola, black raspberry and black pepper.  The palate is off-dry (surprise, surprise) with medium acidity, medium (-) tannins and a medium body.  The flavors echo the nose on this wine that has a slightly tart finish which is short in length. I know it only runs the equivalent of $4 per regular sized bottle but I had hopes, which were dashed as soon as I smelled the candy.  It’s not good.  75 points at best, the rest gets made into gravy.  1 star and a major pass.  Salut….

$22, 3 stars, 89 points, Cabernet franc, chinon, france, loire

Medium ruby colored with medium viscosity (13% ABV).  The nose of this Cabernet Franc has medium intensity aromas of green pepper, licorice, blackberry, blackcurrant and tomato leaf.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity, medium tannins and a medium body.  On the palate I get medium intensity flavors of black currant, blackberry, licorice, green pepper and charred oak.  The finish is medium in length and a touch tart yet refreshing.  Lovely and lithe, this wine will pair nicely with duck, grilled sweetbreads or bangers and mash.  Drink till 2028.  89 points and for $22- 3 stars.  Salut….

$20, 5 stars, 91 points, australia, Barossa, shiraz

Inky colored and opaque with some wall staining and high viscosity (14.7% ABV).  The nose of this Shiraz has aromas of ripe blackberry, vanilla, black cherry, baking spice, eucalyptus, violets and bramble berry.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity and medium (+) tannins plus a full body.  Ripe dark fruit dominates with some eucalyptus and baking spices supporting.  Vanilla makes its entrance on the mid palate as well as some rooibos tea.  The finish is long with bramble featuring plus some spice.  The tannins- they are well integrated and I just realized they are so well balanced.  This is a lovely drop that will drink nicely till 2030 and pair with grilled meat, Sunday roast or hearty stews.  91 points and for $20 it’s a 5 star effort.  Salut….

$40, 5 stars, 93 points, Aussie Cabernet Sauvignon, australia, cabernet sauvignon, margaret river, VWTC

Closing out the 34th Virtual Wine Tasting was this 100% Cab Sav from Margaret River in Western Australia.  I wanted to introduce the group to a whole new region and style that this versatile grape can achieve.  We noted a deep ruby color with high viscosity (14.5% ABV).  The nose hit us with an intense aroma of green pepper right off the bat.  Getting past that we smelled cassis, blackberry, black plum, smoke, baking spices, licorice, mint and that telltale- eucalyptus.  The palate was dry with medium acidity, medium (+) tannins and a full body.  The green pepper is much subdued and melds in with the ripe dark fruit, cassis, oak notes and eucalyptus.  A medium length finish closed out the tasting.  I scored it 17 points with a + symbol after it making this my WOTN.  At $40, this 93 pointer gets 5 stars from me until I tasted it again later.  It kept getting better, richer, more focussed.  I will revisit the remnants tonight – looking forward to that!  It needs a Filet steak with creamy gratin potatoes to do it justice.  This one will drink well until 2030.  Salut….

$40, 5 stars, 93 points, carignan, grenache, Priorat, spain, VWTC

For the third wine of the tasting we opened this Grenache/Carignan blend from Priorat.  I was excited for this wine and it did not disappoint.  Medium ruby colored with high viscosity (15.5% ABV).  The nose had medium (+) intensity aromas of game, smoke, musk, black cherry, black pepper, leather, blackberry, anise and was a touch jammy.  Very interesting and earthy/meaty.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity, medium  (-) tannins and a full body.  Not quite as jammy on the palate it still showed its gamy side with dark fruit and leather supporting.  It turned a bit dusty and the tannins seemed very powdery on the mid palate.  An ethereal sensation imho.  The long finish closed out this $40 wine that garnered 17 points on our tasting sheet and a technical score of 93 making it a 5 star effort.  I would drink this beauty till 2030 with some lighter meat dishes or even a roast duck.  Salut….
