Elderton Shiraz Barossa “Friends Series” 2010

4 stars, 91 points, aussie shiraz, Barossa Shiraz

Finally. I have been in a Shiraz/Syrah slump recently, not being able to find anything worth a damn. This wine came through for me. If you have read my previous posts on Aussie Shiraz, you will remember that I am not a huge fan of the monster jammy style, preferring a more subdued approach to managing the awesome potential of this grape. Elderton has done it with this wine, and for a decent price. Red fruitiness and good balance lead into a nice tannic mouthfeel that caresses with more plummy fruit and good acidity. The wine is somewhat young but drinking nicely already with another 5 years to maturity. My kind of wine for a meaty dinner, perhaps a beef stew. Good balance and a crowd pleaser. 4 stars, 91 points for around $22.

Chateau Latour Camblanes 2009 and 2008

Yup, two vintages in one blog post- by accident. My local shop was running a BOGO on this wine. I am a little leery when shops are giving wine away at half price, a sure sign of it’s inability to sell. However, my goal is to taste every thing in this particular shop (not a huge selection mind you). So, I picked up my two bottles of Latour Camblanes and a bottle of Shiraz. When I arrived at the tasting site, I retrieved all the bottles from my bag and noticed that one of them had a green top on the capsule. Upon further investigation, the labels looked slightly different. I then realized that the staff had placed the 2009 vintage behind the 2008 and the SKU’s must have registered as the same item. I had paid full price for the 2008 and got the 2009 for free- as advertised. I was excited to perform a mini-vertical tasting and proceeded to open both bottles. I started with ’08 and realized my worst fears. The wine needed to be given away at half price, it was just shabby. No flavor profile, very little tannin and generally flat. Yuck. On to the 2009, not so. Cherry and tobacco, some edgy tannins and a crisp acidity made me come back for more. I did not drink any more of the 2008 because I believe strongly that life is too short to drink crappy wine. My drunk friend didn’t care and proceeded to polish it off for us, leaving the far better ’09 for me to ponder and enjoy. In a nutshell, 2009 was a far superior vintage in Bordeaux and this point was highlighted in our little tasting. I would imagine the ’08 was a combination of poorly made wine in an average vintage versus a little more effort put into a far better vintage. It’s a shame really because I am now poisoned by this brand. I will not take a chance on their wine, knowing that they did not perform in an average year and relied on nature to help them out in an excellent year. 2008 1 star and 80 points. 2009 3 stars and 85 points. Would I buy again? Nope.

D’Arenberg “The Footbolt” Shiraz 2009

2 stars, 85 points, aussie shiraz

When in doubt about a wine list, go with D’Arenberg.  Each bottling has the signature red sash across the label and I have never been let down- until yesterday.  This wine was just so plain and uninteresting I had to see what others were saying.  I am not alone.  It must be the vintage, because I usually see some good depth in this brand, usually well balanced and flavorful.  I got some red raspberry out of the nose, but not much transcending the palate.  Very little tannic structure leave me to wonder about the long term viability of this vintage.  A true disappointment, but I haven’t given up on the brand.  Like I said, a go-to-wine when confused about a wine list.  2 stars and 85 points.  Boo hoo…..

Burgess Syrah Napa Valley 2006

2 stars, 86 points, napa syrah

Syrah is also known as Shiraz and comes in many styles from all over the world.  In Australia, they make it in a jam-bolic style, in the south of France, a more restrained style.  In Napa, Burgess has gone old-world and made a soft and rounded style of Syrah that I would consider pretty decent for an everyday drinker.  However, the price of this offering versus the quality and value leave me somewhat disappointed.  Some fruit, little tannic structure and nothing to really stick out and say “pick me”.  I really wanted this wine to rock and roll, but it’s just not happening.  2 stars in my books.  I reckon an 86 pointer.

Pelican Ranch Pinot Noir 2009

3 stars, 90 points, Santa cruz Pinot noir

15.4% alcohol, do you really need to do that? Having said that, I find no heat and am enjoying the essence of fruit. Wild cherries on the nose translate into strawberry and bing cherry on the palate.
This wine has typicity at the expense of finesse. I like it’s taste, but find the alcohol offensive. A medium term wine, drink until 2016 .
3 stars but a generous 90 points on the pro scale. If they can get a lower alcohol and maintain the flavor, this wine has potential.

Trivento Torrontes Reserve

4 stars, 90 points, Argentina wines, Torrontes

Extremely aromatic with scents of flowers and rose water, this white wine is very tasty, with a full-on mouthfeel. Lacking in razor sharp acidity, it comes across as a drinking wine, although I reckon it would go very well with Turkey. In the mid-palate I am getting some citrus mixed with a dryness that I can only think (tannins). It is leaving a nice feeling in my mouth and a long after taste that is most enjoyable. This style of wine reminds me of Gewurtztraminer: highly aromatic, very tasty, low in acidity and not everyone’s cup-o-tea. I love it and will stick a few in the fridge. A great party wine, good for casual BBQ and in my opinion- a well made wine deserving 4 stars. My guess is it’s a 90 point wine. I have loved Trivento’s red wines, the whites are on the same path. Salut

Cosentino Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

4 stars, 91 points, napa cab

This is classic Napa Cabernet….. Dark blue fruits on the nose mixed with some spice transition to a beautiful palate of blueberry meets plum and cassis. Notes of spice come through that mix it up with the well integrated tannins and help form a mouth-puckering finish that lasts a long time. I was worried about this bottle when I inspected the cork and saw a wide line all the way up the side….

20120913-184133.jpg
But alas, all was well. Seven years of age and this wine is showing nicely with at least another 7 to go. Unfortunately, this winery had some issues ( google Cosentino winery). A shame really as the wine fulfills the requirements of Napa Cab in all the right ways at a price that wont kill ya. I reckon at least 4 stars and 91 points, (it keeps getting better as I write). Glad I have more! Cheers

Fox Grove Shiraz/ Cabernet Sauvignon NV

4 stars, 88 points, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz

NV means no vintage. Not a bad thing for certain wines, like champagnes that are blended from several vintages- but in red wine…….Makes me wonder. Then again, it is on an airplane, United Airlines to be precise, where I got to sample this little gem. Perhaps I’m being a little harsh, I have reason. Airlines generally serve crap, at high prices, it’s part of the deal. United in particular has tried to cut every cost. They must, or risk disappearing.
With that off my chest, this wine is not bad. Cherry candy on the nose brings some really tasty/chewy red currants on the decently balanced mid plate, fruitiness that has a good acidic component and even some puckering tannins.
Come to think of it, this I better than the crappy Smoking Loon they serve in First Class on United. I may have to decline the courtesy upgrade they gave me for next week.
Timing the aftertaste, a good 20 seconds or more. I have no idea how much this one costs, but I bet it’s bargain basement, and for that: 4 stars. Well worth it for a big party on a summers day, throwing down some BBQ. The Shiraz is not jammy, like too many Aussie reds, and the Cabernet gives it the structure it needs to pull the whole thing off. Kudos. I am taking a stab here and guessing it is worthy of 88 points. You should keep a few laying around in case the boys show up unexpectedly.

4 stars, 90 points, petite sirah, tinta cao

Really purple hue from this blend of Petite Sirah (love it already) and a Portuguese grape called Tinta Cao gives me a funky nose of chocolate and blackberry. On the palate, thin tannins reveal a blueberry and jam core of fruit. Not as prominent as the GSM, this is well made and balanced. A puckering after taste is long and delicious, giving this wine a bump in my books. 4 stars and. 90 point effort that excites me because it’s a different blend, and it works. Well done….

5 stars, 92 points, grenache, mourvedre, napa blend

The great blend of the Rhone- Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre. Very gorgeous plummy nose gives way to red fruits exploding in a certain freshness that leaves a great mouthfeel. A child at 5, the tannins are well stocked and ready for the next 10 years of drinking. A very well made wine IMHO. I would love to revisit in 5 years- betting some barny type secondary stuff comes out, the kinds that excite me. 5 star effort, 92 points if I were rating it.
