$17, 3 stars, 87 points, dornfelder, germany, pfalz

Dornfelder is a new grape for me.  It grows mostly in Germany and was developed as a cross back in 1979.  Medium purple colored it has a watery sheen in the glass (12.5% ABV).  Medium intensity aromas of black cherry, spice box, blackcurrant that is a touch green, blackberry leaf and a hint of charcoal.  The palate is seemingly a touch off-dry with juicy acidity and very low tannins.  Medium intensity flavors of grape, blackberry leaf, black cherry and blackcurrant.  Medium bodied- it carries on to a medium length finish that has some really nice acidity.  It conjures up thoughts of Gamay meets Pinot Noir, a very easy-going wine with lithe tannins and a nice mouthfeel.  The acidity offsets the trace residual sugars that make it a touch off-dry. This wine screams out for smoked meats, even a semi-spicy bowl of chili.  I like it and am glad I tried this varietal.  You too can get a bottle for $17.  Not wildly complex or cellar worthy, it gets 87 points from me and 3 stars.  Drink soon.  Salut….

$21, 5 stars, 91 points, chianti classico, Italy, sangiovese, tuscany

We went out to dinner last night and ordered this $21 Sangiovese ($65 at the restaurant 😳).  I did not take notes but loved the wine.  At 4 years of age it was showing plenty of earthy, tertiary notes along with some fruit and oak influence.  The leather fingerprint of this varietal was abundant and the tannins had really integrated. Acidity was en pointe and the wine had a lovely mid length finish.  Well worth the price of entry even at a restaurant.  91 points from me and a drink till 2025 window.  5 stars.  Salut….

$12, 2 stars, 84 points, beaujolais, france, gamay, nouveau

My second Nouveau of the season, following on from the delicious Georges DuBœf on release night.  This one is medium purple, a touch less opaque that the previous.  The nose has pronounced aromas of grape bubble gum, banana, red cherry candy (red licorice) and a touch of spice.  The palate is dry with medium (+) acidity and very low tannins.  Medium (-) bodied, I get flavors of grape bubble gum, grape jelly, cherry candy, and red licorice.  It is a bit one-dimensional compared to the previous bottle.  The finish is short but the tartness rolls on for a while.  Not my favorite.  84 points and for $12, 2 stars.  Drink now.  Salut….

George’s Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2022, Beaujolais, France

$12, 5 stars, 90 points, beaujolais, france, gamay

The third Thursday in November is an auspicious day for Beaujolais- the official release of the year’s Nouveau happens around the world at the same time.  It started as a marketing ploy to get people to buy the relatively cheap, easygoing wine. Fresh out of  stainless steel tanks where it was Carbonically Macerated, this alternative method of producing wine from the Gamay grape makes for unique flavors and textures. Georges DuBœf invented the craze so it seemed fitting that I try his $12 effort first.

Deep purple in the glass with watery legs (13% ABV).  The nose is classic Nouveau/Carbonic.  Bright grapey aromas, purple bubble gum, zingy cherries, red currants and red licorice.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and very low tannins, if any.  The red fruit and candy are very present whilst the grapey component is not as prominent.  The wine is mouthwatering on the back end and has a medium (-) body.  The length of the finish is shortish but I am really enjoying the freshness and vibrancy that is has to offer.  Keep in mind this wine is meant for immediate consumption, it should keep for a year or so.  I like it for what it is and would pair it with roasted chicken, grilled swordfish or even a pasta dish with red sauce.  90 points makes it a 5 star effort.  Go and get a bottle if you have never tried this style of wine- unique!  Salut….

$40, 5 stars, 94 points, cabernet sauvignon, california, napa valley

Inky purple in the glass it has slow moving, thick legs (15.1% ABV) and leaves a purple stain on the wall.  The nose has dusty earth, ripe blackcurrants, blackberry, menthol, cedar, pencil shavings and blueberry pie.  The palate is dry with medium acidity and medium (+) tannins that are very smooth yet powerful.  Pronounced flavors of blackberry, cassis, blueberry compote, baking spices, pencil shavings, mint and cedar along with that earthy dust make for a delicious wine that has a full body and a medium length finish.  This wine has ripe fruit, great structure and just the right amount of oak treatment.  It is really yummy stuff that gets 94 points from me and at $40- it’s a no brainer Napa Cabernet that will cellar nicely till 2030 at the least and pair beautifully with all types of grilled meats, stews and hearty pasta dishes.  5 stars. Salut….

$18, 4 stars, 89 points, greece, moschofilero, Peloponnese

Pale lemon colored with medium intensity aromas of lush tropical fruit- pineapple, papaya and kiwi fruit intermingled with pear, rose petals and bruised red apple.  The palate is dry with medium (-) acidity and medium body.  Flavors of papaya and pear dominate with kiwi and bruised red apple supporting. The papaya and apple both have a unique, overripe accent that makes this quite interesting and adds to the body of this lush wine.  It has a medium length finish with a touch of astringency from almond seed that I find intriguing.  This is an interesting varietal that I am thoroughly enjoying.  Tonight I am pairing it with Chinese inspired dishes including some spicy chili infused plates.  I believe the wine will stand up to the heat and complexity of the fare.  89 points for this $18 wine makes it a 4 star effort to try out.  Drink now.  Salut….

Quinta Das Carvalhas Reserva Tawny Port NV, Porto, Portugal

$23, 5 stars, 91 points, dessert wine, port, portugal

I bought this Tawny Port to compare to the Ruby version I recently tasted.  It is a medium garnet color, less intense that the ruby port.  The nose is quite pronounced with raisins, prunes, jammy blackberry, walnuts, Brazil nuts and dusty mocha.  Semi sweet on the palate with medium acidity and medium tannins.  I get rich flavors of  stewed black fruit with prunes and raisins.  The nuttiness is not as pronounced on the palate as the nose but it is still present.  The heat on the back end is quite noticeable on this full bodied wine.  It’s delicious with a long finish that I’m savoring.  For the price of $23 this 91 pointer gets 5 stars from me.  I’m trying to decide if I prefer Ruby vs. Tawny port.  You?  Drink this with some rich cheese.  Salut….

$13, 5 stars, 89 points, australia, Naked Wines, shiraz, south australia

This blend of Shiraz is a medium shade of garnet in the glass with defined legs (15% ABV).  The nose has pronounced aromas of black plum, black raspberry, blackberry, cinnamon and dill.  The palate is dry with medium (-) acidity and very supple tannins.  Medium bodied- this delicious wine has very ripe fruit flavors of plum, dark raspberry and black cherry with some licorice, pepper and cedar.  The alcohol shows up on the back end with a touch of heat on the throat, which was to be expected.  The finish is medium in length and I get dark red and black fruit with some oak notes.  Really delightful wine that gets 89 points from me and at $13 it’s a steal worthy of 5 stars.  Drink over the short term with some braised beef ribs or perhaps a roast leg of lamb.  Salut….

Karen Birmingham Reserve Zinfandel 2020, Lodi, California

$14, 5 stars, 90 points, california, Lodi, Naked Wines, zinfandel

A deep shade of purple bordering on ruby, this potent Zin (14.9% ABV) has super slow forming legs on the walls of the glass.  The nose has medium intensity aromas of blackberry, purple licorice, coffee, star anise, super ripe raspberry (almost candy-like) and baking spice.  The palate is dry yet there is evidence off very ripe fruit- blackberry, black raspberry alongside fennel, dill and coffee.  Medium acidity and smooth, medium tannins make for a lovely mouthfeel, albeit with some heat evident.  The finish is short  in length but everything ends at the same point, no lingering acidity/tannins.  After a re-taste I get some extra licorice that I was not initially tasting- lovely stuff.  I like this $14 bottle that gets 90 points from me and 5 stars.  I would pair it with stews and hearty meat dishes, including game.  Drink till 2026.  Salut….

Chrysalis Vineyards winery visit

Norton, petit verdot, Tannat, virginia

I took a drive out to Northern Virginia’s wine country and visited the Chrysalis winery in Middleburg.  They specialize in the native Norton grape which is medium to high in acidity, full bodied but with very soft tannins.  High levels of anthocyanin help to deliver a beautifully rich dark purple color to the young wine.  I tasted several different versions of this varietal including a blend.  The flight consisted of 3 dry reds and a sweet blush plus I got a bonus- the Papillon which is a blend of Tannat and Petit Verdot.

My favorite from the flight was the Bull Run Mountain Cuvee, which uses some Carbonic Maceration as well as traditional fermentation.  This gives the wine very soft tannins and bright fruit flavors.  The Barrel Select and Locksley Reserve were not my favorites- the Carbonically macerated Barrel Select was a touch too spicy for my taste.  The Locksley has some Tannat added to it which beefs up the tannins yet I still did not care for the flavor profile as much.  Don’t get me wrong, I could sit on their beautiful patio and sip these all day.  Speaking of the patio, the Sarah’s Patio Red was definitely not my cup of tea.  I love dessert wines, I love Port, I love sparkling/spritzy wines, I like Blush wines, but I really did not care for the cloying nature of this one.  It might be right up your alley so don’t let my opinion sway you from trying it.  The last wine I drank was the Papillon- a blend of more traditional varietals….Tannat and Petit Verdot.  I like the balance of this wine, the flavors were layered and far more complex.  This is a serious wine to sit and ponder.  It runs $40 at the winery and is well suited to pair with hearty dishes as the Fall and Winter approach.  I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon trip out to this beautiful venue where you can order pizzas and light fare to pair with the very large selection of varietals that are interesting and not mainstream…. The staff were great and very informative.  I’ll be back to try the rest of their offerings.  Salut….
