Corked wines

Ten percent off all wines are corked.  That’s right, one in every 10 is ‘off’.  I must say that my percentage is a lot less, perhaps less than 1%.  When it happens, it’s annoying and I feel cheated.  My last wine was a 2001 Spanish Rioja that I had spent a pretty penny on a few weeks ago.  I opened it last night with great fanfare, only to be embarrassed by it’s poor health.  I bought it in Hong Kong at a local wine merchant, no doubt they won’t be able to help.  Of note, I took a bottle of Domaine Serene Evenstad back to my local wine merchant and was immediately given another.  I have purchased form online retailers and only had two bottles go bad,  a credit was issued to my credit card.  It’s merchants like these that earn my business.  So, this one will just be chalked up to bad luck.  I hope your averages are as good as mine.  Salut….

Chakana Estate Selection Malbec 2009

Christmas dinner in a restaurant- not ideal but we made it work.  I started off with a pint of Guiness, because it’s good for you.  The appetizer was baby lobster with caviar and wild greens.  The most amazing soup followed that was drizzled with truffle oil, I nearly asked for seconds.  The moment of truth arrived when the Filet Mignon’s were served and this Malbec was poured.  The food was incredible and the wine held its own.

Dark purple in the glass as was expected from this varietal, it offered some dark plums and black cherry notes on the nose.  A very smooth initial attack was a concoction of ripe plum and blackberry jam, but not overpowering.  In fact, the wine was very balanced and restrained.  Many times I feel that Malbec is over extracted and over the top.  This wine had a certain level of civility which was appreciated on the occasion.  The Filet cut of beef is rather mild and does not need an overly tannic fruit bomb.  This wine paired perfectly and was a hit at the table.  The structure is well built and this wine could cellar easily for 5 years .  We paid restaurant prices but this wine can be had for about $22.  I am giving it 90, even though WS gave it 89.  4 stars for me and I’ll be on the lookout for it at my local wine shop.  Ps. Love the label.  Salut and Merry Christmas….

Keller Estate ‘Casa de la Cruz’ Pinot Noir 2010

I am a fan of this winery and have had many bottles of their regular Pinot.  I brought this particular wine from home, all the way to Asia and opened it on Christmas day with the fellas before dinner.  The wine is labelled a Sonoma Coast product yet it merges Old World Pinot with New World fruitiness.  A great cherry component with underlings of earth, iodine and strawberry.  The cherry fruit becomes a bit muted on the mid palate and is replaced with red currants and some cola.  The mouthfeel is good and the acidity is present but not biting.  Perhaps this particular bottle is suffering some jet lag. I think it is somewhat muted and could use a few days to settle down after the journey.  I paid $20 for it and am going with 88 points right now.  It potentially could go to 90 if it balances out after some cellaring.  3 Stars from me, Salut….

From the Santa Lucia Highlands comes this modern styled Pinot Noir.  Bright cherries and gobs full of green pepper swirled around in some decent acidity with a nice finish. Not exactly my style of Pinot, but certainly well made and delicious.  I would bet this wine is popular with New World fans as it offers upfront fruit and a touch of the wood.  It is very smooth at 7 years of age and will probably go for another 5 years.  I don’t see much evolution a’la Burgundy but it will retain its freshness.  WS gave it 91, I’m going with 90.  I believe it can be found for $42 now which makes it a solid 3 star wine for me.  I would drink this with Roast Chicken or by itself, keeping a watch on the sneaky 14.2% alcohol so it doesn’t sideswipe you.  Salut….

I’m back in Asia, re-united with my partner in crime- The Beave.  He brought this highly rated Sonoma Zin from home for us to share.  Black cherry and tar with some Asian plums and a hint of oak.  Extremely smooth with gentle tannins that caress the mouth yet manage to hide the whopping 14.8% alcohol.  A long finish and good acidic structure make this a really good wine that could be cellared for a few years, but why wait?  I think he laid out about $20 for this 90 pointer and I am going with 3 stars.  Salut….

Christmas came early this year

Tags

It’s Sunday, December 22- the day after Christmas.  I shall explain.  My company decided to cancel my November vacation and put me on a 6 week training course.  I missed Thanksgiving, the annual Nutcracker Ballet, where I play Uncle Drosselmeier and get to perform with my 9 year old daughter and 11 year old son (he plays Fritz).   Having spent 4 weeks on the course already, I ws given a 6 day break to come home, 12,000 miles of traveling and a 13 hour time change.  I now find myself headed back to complete my training, which has me flying on Christmas day AND New Years day, bastards.

Anyway, Moxie, being the smart gal, called Christmas early.  We celebrated yesterday with presents, dinner and good wine with our family.  Christmas actually started 3 weeks ago for me, in Hong Kong.  One of my friends hosted a men’s luncheon at his house.  We started out with 4 bottles of fizzy and moved on to a Sauvignon Blanc with  the Prawn cocktail.  For the main course, I had brought along the faithful Lynch Bages 2001 and the ringer- Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon 2002.  We moved on to copious other bottles of Merlot, Cab, and god knows what before I packed it in at 9:30 pm.  We had stared at noon and managed to celebrate in grand fashion all afternoon and into the night.  Those crazy Brits, they know how to get it done.

IMG_0520Later in the month, my friend Lemming had won the annual football bet so I was obliged to pour the good stuff, a 2001 Calon Segur that he eyed in my room. ( I never travel light).  He and I have a repeat bet for the next two weeks of Fantasy, I ‘ll let you know how I did.

Meanwhile at home Moxie was busy getting the kids into the spirit. She took the younger two to the annual Santa visit. She managed to decorate the house and get the whole Christmas spirit going even in my absence, making my return awesome.

Moving ahead to this past Friday… I drove to the heart of Virginia to pick up son #2 from boarding school. I packed a snack of raw chestnuts for my snack. Nothing spells Christmas like roasted chestnuts, I just happen to love them raw too. The 2 1/2 hour drive allowed me to reflect on my week, my life and my family. The return trip was loud with three smelly teenage boys all talking at once. It was a good ride.

Which brings us to Saturday, our Christmas day.
Moxie had saved every $5 dollar bill for the last year and used the cash to buy me the most amazing gift, the Big Green Egg grill.  I immediately prepared the Chicken for a good old fashion slow cook with a bottle of peach wine shoved up it’s derrier and coated with salt, pepper and sage.  The wood I used was cherry for the smoke and the charcoal was original hard wood chunks, old school…  This grill is going to be fun and the learning curve steep but I am looking forward to it.  I also slow cooked a standing rib roast, which I overdid- enough said.

The evening started out with some Domaine Ste. Michel Blanc de Blancs.  A refreshingly dry and crisp sparkler that over performs every year.  Crispy green apple and tart lemons with a delicious mousse and nice finish.  Mum likes raspberries in her glass so I obliged, trying a glass myself- not a fan.  I then opened some Chardonnay for the folks and cranked it up a notch for myself.  The last of my 2000 Opus One to go with the Beef.  This wine was given bad reviews on release and poor marks for it’s $200+ price point.  I have thought contrary to the pro’s and have really enjoyed this wine in it’s latter years where it bested Lynch Bages and other fine wines.  In case you missed it –  Opus One ’00.  This bottle was delicious but had an obnoxious odor that I could not figure out.  It detracted initially but I managed to separate the nasal channel and simply enjoy the cassis and plum infused nectar, wondering how many more years this Napa Cab can run.  It certainly shows no letting up and I now wish I had not drunk those first few so early.  Oh well, that’s what makes wine so interesting- watching the evolution and appreciating each nuanced step.

Louis Latour Ardeche Viognier 2011

I was preparing our dinner last night when it dawned on me that I needed to pair sweet potato and Thai eggplant Penang curry, Chicken Satay and Thai Beef salad.  A myriad of spiced dishes, not spicy as such, just highly flavored.  Red was out of the question, as was Chardonnay.  What I needed was something aromatic and slightly sweet.  Riesling would have been perfect, but I was up for a challenge, not the easy road.  I thought about a Gewurtztraminer, but settled for a Viognier.  The Louis Latour brand covers many regions and every price point.  I went with the $12 offering from the Ardeche region which is located in the southern Rhone.

This wine is decent, showing off it’s pale yellow straw color and offering up some aromatics of green apple and petrol with some lemon zest.  On the palate, a cutting acidity is immediately noticeable as is some back end bite.  The fruity composure is pale green apple and lemon with some quince in the mix.  I was hoping for more aromatic flavors of rose petals and pineapple, but alas that is not typical of this hot region.  The wine lacked the sweetness I seeked but made up for it with the acidity.  Whilst I enjoyed the wine and thought the pairing was great I had some reservations about the back end bite.  87 points and 3 stars for this one.  Enjoy it with spicy dishes or on the patio in the mid-summer heat.  Salut….

Christopher Creek Petite Sirah 2005

I have just returned back from a month in Asia, eating at restaurants and not having access to my own cellar.  Well, my first meal at home was a huge success.  Moxie threw together some Korean Short Ribs, mashed Cauliflower, Carrots and a Kale salad.  I needed a rustic, powerful wine to go with the multi-dimensional ribs which had been slow cooking all day.  I decided on the Christopher Creek from the Russian River Valley as I remembered it to be rather full bodied and high in alcohol, something I figured might help cut the fattiness of the meat.  I was spot on.  What I did not realize was that the wine has evolved since I last drank it 18 moths ago.  Smoother, more mellow and not visibly showing off it’s 14.3% alcohol any more.  The baby fat is gone off this brooding monster.  Dark purple and ready to go with black currant, black berries with a touch of cassis.  Very smooth with fine grained tannins and a good cutting acidity.  This wine keeps getting better and I reckon will further evolve, perhaps drinking well until 2018 at the least.  The pairing was awesome and my love of Petite Sirah has been cemented yet again.  I believe it used to retail for $33.  I am going with 91 points and 4 stars.  Salut….

Villa Wolf Pinot Noir 2009

This is a German Pinot Noir that we ordered on my last night in Hong Hong, dining at a  German restaurant on Roasted Pig’s Knuckle and Sauerkraut.  Notes of Kirsch and cherry were found on the nose and palate.  A very basic wine and serviceable at $12 retail, yet lacking in any depth or complexity.  Unlike Burgundy and definitely not a New World wine, it was out there on it’s own for style.  The German’s are well known for Riesling, not Pinot.  It went well with the Pork and Kraut with it’s own acidity to match and enough fruit to balance the meat that I slathered with hot mustard.  84 points and 2 stars,  Salut….

Cono Sur 20 Barrels Limited Edition Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

I paid $23 for this Chilean Cabernet, hoping for some fireworks.  None came, it was a damp squib.  Very ordinary and plain- not what I was expecting.  The wine was decent, but lacked any depth and complexity.  Purple in color and with basic fragrances of plums and oak.  On the palate, very straightforward black currants, oak and some mint.  Decent tannins and acidity provided a good structure.  I really did not get too much from this wine and am going with 87 points and 3 stars.   Salut….
