$55, 4 stars, 92 points, cabernet sauvignon, sonoma mountain

I tasted the 2006 Peters Family Cabernet exactly three years ago and am impressed that it has evolved more and gotten a higher score from me.

A nose of black currant preserves, pine needles and tar.  On the palate a beautiful intro of plum, black berries and dried mint.  The mid palate shows off some great tannins that are persistent yet subdued.  The acidity is somewhat muted, overshadowed by the fruit and tannins.  The finish is short to medium in length but ends with the tannic dryness.  This wine has a great mouthfeel that I really like and the fruit is still vibrant.  A mostly Cabernet Sauvignon wine that has 23% Merlot mixed in.  Secondary flavors are evident and I’m excited about this wine’s development.  Drink till 2022 with pasta, steaks and roasted game.  92 points and 4 stars for this $55 effort.  Salut….

$42, 3 stars, 90 points, cabernet sauvignon, Napa, napa cabernet

A college friend moved to our area last year and we have been trying to meet up more than just once every six months, so when he suggested bringing over some vino and charcuterie on a beautiful Saturday afternoon….  I lit the outdoor fire and cleared the patio.

First up was this gem from Napa.  Relatively young, I figured it could use decanting.  We drank it with various cold meets and cheeses and talked of the old days.  It was a fun afternoon and the wine certainly made it a memorable experience.  I did not take notes but am relying on my memory.

Color was textbook and the nose had plum, dark fruits and a hint of oak.  On the palate, super smooth.  If nothing else, this wine glides like buttah.  A rounded mouthfeel full of more dark plum and black berries.  The tannins were very integrated and not drying.  Either the decanting really did the trick or the wine is very stealthy with hiding them.  A balanced acidity make this wine very easy to drink now, but I think it will cellar well for a few years (Say till 2022).  Our pairing was excellent with the cold cuts but think this wine will be great with a fall dish like Osso Bucco, Coq au Vin or even Venison stew.  I’m liking it a bunch and will go 90 points on this $42 offering.  3 stars and worthy of splashing out with good friends.  Salut…

$8, 2 stars, 84 points, Italy, sangiovese, Tuscan

I’m in Japan and wanted to enjoy something red in my hotel room.  I found this bottle at what looked like an Import Gourmet shop.  I paid 1280 Japanese Yen for it, but it can be found for $8 USD.  The notes:  See-through pale purple that gives away the extraction of this wine.  On the nose- subdued hints of dark cherry fruit and a touch of leather.  Very hard to discern from a straight glass (no wine glasses in the hotel room!).  On the palate I’m getting some black fruit and telltale Sangiovese notes.  The wine has a refreshing acidity and a slight dryness from the well camouflaged tannins.  The finish is short but decent, leaving behind some tannic components that grip the gums.  This wine is relatively light in extraction, easy to quaff and a decent sundowner.  84 points make this a 2 star wine.  Would I buy it again?  Negative.  Salut….

$13, 4 stars, 89 points, Cabernet franc, california, Lodi

A see through purple that indicates to me a textbook amount of extraction for this seductive and silky grape.  A nose of black fruits, oak and black cherry.  I have come across this profile before, but not in a Cabernet Franc.  On the palate there is a really delicious black cherry component that mixes it up with violets.  The tannins are well integrated yet offer a certain dryness that goes well with many foods.  The mid palate and finish continue the tastes found initially and the wine rounds out with a decent mid length finish that has a tar component.  I am really enjoying this wine, not just because I love Cab Franc, but because it adheres to some of the basic tenets of the grape yet goes into uncharted territory for me.  89 points from me and for $13 it is a good deal worth 4 stars.  Salut….

$24, 4 stars, 89 points, Napa, semillon

Gorgeous pale gold color gives way to a nose of persimmon, ginger root and cut grass.  On the palate it introduces lemons, star fruit and a waxy component.  Sharp and cutting, it rounds out the midpalate with hazelnut.  Vanilla bean is present on the finish, which is of medium length.  This wine is racy and easy to drink.  It would pair well with oysters on the half, perhaps a middle eastern mezza, or you can be adventurous like me and serve it with Chili.  I’m a member of this winery and get an allotment twice a year, this one was a good surprise!  It retails at $24 and gets 89 points.  4 Stars from me and a repeat buy on the next order!  Salut….

$9, 5 stars, 88 points, columbia valley, pinot gris

Pale yellow, almost cloud-like in the glass.  A nose of lemon curd, green melon and kumquat.  The flavors on the initial attack are pear, lemon and seven-up.  This wine reminds me of a steely Chablis, very minerally and biting.  Acidity is present but subsides nicely into a mid palate and finish of green pear and lemon drops.  This winery is very consistent and I really enjoy what they make.  88 points and 5 stars for this $9 effort.  A go-to winery in a pinch and on a budget.  I served it up with grilled Salmon. Salut….

Bulgariana Imperial Red Blend Thracian Valley 2009

$14, 5 stars, 90 points, bulgarian wine, cabernet sauvignon, merlot

I’m not holding my breath on this $8 offering.  I just had to try it, for the sake of seeking out a high QPR wine.  The wine is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cab Sav and 5% each of Rubin and Mavrud- both of which I have never heard of let alone try.  The wine is 7 years old so I am a little surprised that my local Costco was carrying it in bulk.  Anyway, it begins with a dark purple in the glass and a nose of spices, mulled plums and sushi.   I know that sounds strange but there is a component that is intriguing me and it reminds me of the seaweed in a sushi roll.  I’m kinda digging it!
On the palate this wine is really delicious with some searing tannins.  I am impressed.  Plums, black cherry, a touch of wood and cola syrup.  This wine reminds me of a monster Tannat, thick, brooding and bone dry with tannins running amuck.  It is young and needs several more years to mellow.  I am returning for more and sticking them in the cellar.  I think it would work great with a well marbled steak, Lamb stew or something else needing the tannins to offset fatty dishes.  The wine could also be sent through a Vinturi or decanted but it really is delicious by itself if you like the dry ones.  I’m going 90 points and for sure 5 stars for its exceptional QPR (Quality Price Ratio).  PS.  I searched for it online, it runs $14- still a great value.  Salut….

Michael David Petite Petit Lodi Central Valley California 2014

$13, 5 stars, 90 points, california, Lodi, petit verdot, petite sirah

Moxie and I went to the local Costco yesterday and I steered us into the wine aisle…  I picked up some interesting wines but the label on this one sold both Moxie and me.  She’s a graphic artist by trade and has a good eye for marketing.  This label was a winner.  I glanced at the back label and immediately decided I needed to try this blend of 85% Petite Sirah and 15% Petit Verdot.

Wow, what a beautiful dark purple in the glass.  A nose of twizzlers, strawberry jam and some oak.  It’s not my favorite profile but I’ll wait to taste.  The initial taste is deelish.  This is a rich wine that starts off with black cherries, dark stone fruit and strawberries on the mid palate.  Ripe tannins round it out for a balanced mouthfeel. The wine finishes strong with notes of cherries jubilee laced with some tannins.  I’m loving the flavor profile if not the aromas.  I bought this wine for $12.89 at Costco.  You know I love both Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot which makes this wine really appealing.  It rates a 90 with me and that makes it a must buy and 5 stars.  I’m getting more in the morning.  Drink now till 2019 with red meat, venison and stews.  A perfect fall wine.  Besides, look at that cool label- winner!  Salut….

CVNE Rioja Reserva Spain 2012

$15, 86 points, rioja, spain, tempranillo

I will start out by saying that the label and name got me.  The 93 point WS capsule sold me along with the $15 price tag at my local Costco.  How could I pass on this amazing QPR (Quality Price Ratio).  I have read much about this winery and all their award winning wines.

Nose of blueberry and earth.  On the palate I get subdued notes of blue fruits, some blackberry and a swath of fine grained tannins.  There is an offsetting acidity that is bracing.  The wine is short on the finish but I fear I am drinking it prematurely.  For now it lacks depth and is rather thin.  If I were to score it on it’s initial presence- 86 points is all I could.  The label  states that it got a monster 93 points, which would make this $15 bottle a 5 star wine.  Let it breathe for 24 hours and revisit.

Nope, still a little light in the flavor profile and the wine seriously lacks depth.  Did I get a bum bottle?  I am heading back to Costco soon and will get another, surely I am wrong.  For now I will reserve judgement on this Tempranillo blend and just give a preliminary rating of 86 points and 2 stars.  Stay tuned for updates on what could be the biggest winner out there (3 pts for $15….Dang).  Salut….

$21, 3 stars, 89 points, central coast, chardonnay, monterey

My folks were in town and took us out to dinner at this great new seafood place.  Mum loves the Chard and we were there for seafood so it made sense to order something white and refreshing.  On the nose this wine presents apple, melon and a hint of citrus.  Being unoaked I was expecting something really steely, perhaps overly flinty or minerally but this wine was well balanced and did not overstretch itself.  Anjou pear, a touch of minerality and some citrus notes were what was on offer.  Well balanced and not too acidic.  The folks and Moxie don’t like them to cut too much.  I enjoyed this wine immensely and my folks raved about it.  I think it warrants 89 points and I have found it online for $21, which is shocking considering we only paid $35 at the restaurant.  3 stars and worthy of buying a few for some trout on the grill, perhaps some shrimp scampi.  Salut….
